I didnt realise my mother was a person until I was thirteen years old and she pulled me out of bed, put me in the back of her car, and we left home and my dad with no explanations. I thought that Ma was all that she was and all that she had ever wanted to be. I was wrong. As we made our way from Virginia to California, returning to the places where shed lived as a child in foster care and as a teenager on the run, repaying debts and keeping promises, I learned who she was in her life-before-me and the secrets she had kept even from herself. But when life on the road began to feel normal I couldnt forget the home wed left behind, couldnt deny that, just like my mother, I too had unfinished business. This enigmatic pilgrimage takes them back to various stages of Alexs mothers life, each new state prompting stories and secrets. Together they trace back through a life of struggle and adventure to put to rest unfinished business, to heal old wounds and to search out lost friends. This is an extraordinary story of a life; a stunning exploration of identity and an authentic study of the relationship between a mother and her child. The Lauras is the new novel from the exceptionally gifted author of The Shore, which was long listed for the Baileys Womens Fiction Prize and shortlisted for the Guardian First Book Award and the Sunday Times Young Writer of the Year.

Two pans in row for me. I should have followed my impulse to bail early on but I wanted to see where the story went. Nothing about this book seemed cohesive to me and I never found myself caring about anything other than what the father left at home was going through.

Crazeedi That's a bummer, 2 in a row is depressing. I hope you have good luck with the next one 5y
Tamra Shoot, the cover is so enticing! 5y
Jas16 @Tamra I really like the cover too. Reviews on Litsy seem to be pretty split and plenty of people liked it. 5y

Finally got around to finishing this novel I picked up through NetGalley. I love how this story paces itself allowing the mother-child relationship(s) to meander naturally. And, of course, the non-binary narrator journey of self shirks any trite #YA tropes leaving readers to experience a story of high literary merit

Bailedbailed

The aftermath of my evening reading—a double bail! Three words sum up the reason I abandoned both of these: I. Don‘t. Care.

One of those words is a contraction. Does it still count? 🤔 Even this review is more interesting than the books...

Jess_Read_This 😂 Better luck with the next book! 6y
saresmoore @shawnmooney Why is the mother so uninteresting? It seems like she‘s relentlessly self-pitying and the daughter/narrator is a shell character. And you‘re right about the writing. Maybe it‘s at a disadvantage for being compared with The Lost Garden in my mind, but it simply couldn‘t hold my attention after a while. 6y

shawnmooney Have I corrupted you? I sure as heck hope so! 😘😘😘 6y
saresmoore @shawnmooney Oh, I‘m certain you have! I think I only wanted to like The Lauras because the author shares my first name. 😬 6y
Cinfhen Wasn‘t a fan of 6y
saresmoore @Cinfhen What is it about that book? I‘m still trying to put my finger on it. 6y
Cinfhen Nothing about it rang true or interesting ~ I also just DID. NOT. CARE 6y
Cinfhen And what was the point of the ambiguous sexuality of the daughter 6y
saresmoore @Cinfhen Hahaha! I guess that‘s it, then! 6y
saresmoore @Cinfhen I didn‘t even pick up on it as I was reading. Alex was barely a character at all and that bugged me! Is ambiguity an excuse for no substance? (edited) 6y
Itchyfeetreader This is a high runner for my worst read of the year! 6y
Cinfhen I see you had an ARC too! That's the only reason I didn't bail... 6y
saresmoore @Itchyfeetreader Yikes! I don‘t regret bailing, in that case! 6y
saresmoore @Cinfhen Yes! I imagine we won the same giveaway. I should probably have qualms about bailing on an ARC, but I really don‘t. 😬 6y

I love the cover, and although the plot struck me as more than a little clichéd the characters seemed moderately interesting. But the writing itself made my eyes glaze over. Abandoned three pages into chapter 3. No thank you!

Hmmm, I'm really not sure how I feel about this book! Part coming of age, mixed with ambiguous sexual identity/awakening, mother/daughter bonding~road trip thrown in the mix🙆a reluctant pick?!? Could have been better - either way I'm gifting it to any Litten named Laura who lives in the US (sorry, shipping is getting expensive) tag me below if you'd like this book before midnight Sunday 8/13. I'll let a random name generator decide winner🤗

Penny_LiteraryHoarders I like the giveaway hook! That's fun! 7y
cobwebmoth @Cinfhen I'd be interested in reading it. Thanks for the chance!😊 7y

monkeygirlsmama I don't qualify to enter, but had to say I love how you decided to set the parameters for this giveaway. That's fab! Happy Reading to the lucky Laura that wins. 🙃 7y
susanw I'm not a Laura, but I'm reading this now. And to tell the truth, the ambiguous gender of the child kind of annoys me. I get it doesn't really matter. It's a mother/child relationship but I find I'm constantly trying to figure it out. 7y
Cinfhen I agree @susanw it was more of a distraction than anything else, I'm not sure the relevance it added to the story 7y
Cinfhen Thanks, non Laura's 😜 @emilyhaldi @Jas16 @Penny_LiteraryHoarders @monkeygirlsmama looks like @cobwebmoth is the front runner 💗 7y
merelybookish @Cinfhen @susanw I actually liked how Alex's gender identity was not THE story in The Lauras but part of the story. 7y
Cinfhen I'm not sure how Alex's gender identity added to the story @merelybookish 7y
merelybookish @Cinfhen I guess I read it as trying to make an unconventional kid part of a more conventional storyline. It's important and part of Alex's experiences are related to being gende-fluid. But there's also having parents. And figuring out the past. If Alex had been a straight boy or girl, he or she might have sex or fallen in love and that would just be part of the story. 7y
Cinfhen I get what you're saying @merelybookish it certainly effected Alex's schooling ~ but I didn't think the gender ambiguity changed the family dynamics/relationships. I like when other readers have a different reading experience from myself. 7y
Cinfhen Hi @cobwebmoth You are the only Laura who responded...🙀🎉🎁I'm happy to send you the book~ just need your address, which you can email to me cindyh666 at iCloud.com 7y

Road trip, coming-of-age, parent/child relationships. This book isn't breaking narrative ground, but still manages to be fresh and engrossing. Ma crisscrosses the US as she settles scores, keeps promises, recounts her history and the Lauras she's known. But it's narrated by Alex, a kid with a gender-ambiguous identity, a pre-teen when they leave who learns a lot on the road and not just about Ma.
A book with depth, heart, and wisdom.

Cinfhen Nice review! Just finished this one. I'm still trying to figure out how I feel about it! 7y

The ocean is the lover our species never got over. We crawled out of its arms to stumble and stand on solid ground, and have pined for it ever since. It‘s the tragic romance to end them all . It hasn‘t forgotten, either, hasn‘t forgiven that abandonment —try and climb back into its bed without due precaution and it will kill your ass.

An interesting book about coming of age. You never know if Alex is a boy or a girl. Alex's mum leaves on a road trip going back to places in her past taking Alex with her. When the trip starts Alex is a child but at the end Alex is an adult. You see the relationship develop between mum and alex

Some readers will love this one. It's a story of a teenager coming into his/her own, gender identity, mother-child relationships, and revisiting the past. The writing was fairly impressive, but the story just couldn't capture me. I didn't feel like it was going anywhere and what should've probably been a quick read dragged on and on.

I think I'm just ready to move on to something with more action.

An excellent story about the choices we make and those that others (try to) make for us. Peppered with LGBTQIA relationships, romantic, friendships, mother-child, narrator Alex identifies as neither sex not as any particular gender. It is sensitively and cleverly done and while it provides key plot points it never overwhelms the narrative or the character. #litsyreadingchallenge #LRC19

13 year old Alex tells the story of a cross country road trip that occurs when their parents split. On the road trip, Alex's mother revisits her past and the many Lauras that she has known. I especially enjoyed the way the author ended the road trip and its story while leaving open ended the next chapters in Alex's life. #netgalley
