Old Yeller
Old Yeller | Fred Gipson
At first, Travis couldn't stand the sight of Old Yeller The stray dog was ugly, and a thieving rascal, too. But he sure was clever, and a smart dog could be a big help on the wild Texas frontier, especially with Papa away on a long cattle drive up to Abilene. Strong and courageous, Old Yeller proved that he could protect Travis's family from any sort of danger. But can Travis do the same for Old Yeller?

I don‘t recall reading this when I was a kid, but I remember the movie, even if just the end. I wanted something with substance to read to my son, and boy did this deliver. I was sobbing so hard I couldn‘t read the most emotional line of the book! My son, who had dry eyes (how?!), has to read it to me. There is a great lesson at the end, too, that I think gets lost. It‘s one we should remind our children of, especially the ones who dwell on bad.

Ran across this at a used bookstore, in near perfect condition! My son has always enjoyed classics like Treasure Island, Around the World in 80 days, etc. He also loves anything John Wayne, so a classic book has needed to shake things up for a while. I‘ve only seen the movie and am excited to read this aloud. Mentally I‘m prepared for waterworks, even though we already know what‘s going to happen!

I only needed one book to complete my Goodreads challenge for the year — with only today left — so it needed to be short. Old Yeller caught my eye, and I‘d never read it before, so I chose it. While I liked it, I didn‘t cry — possibly because I already knew the ending but possibly also because we‘re told on the very first page what will happen.

Reggie Congrats! 🥳 3y

The relationship between dogs and humans is so fascinating to me. They‘re almost better at being good humans than we are. I know the story of Old Yeller from watching the Disney movie as a child, but reading it was definitely an experience. Of course I cried at the end, who doesn‘t? Despite being more of a young reader classic, I gave it 5⭐️s and will be keeping it with the rest of my classics. ❤️❤️❤️

RobStark92 Yeah I read this in school and I remember watching the movie in class and there was this huge kid next to me named Elvis, and he was like 6 ft and 200 lbs (this was 6th grade) I mean this dude was huge and I handed him some tissues cause he was bawling like a baby. This one and where the red fern grows are probably the saddest dog books out there 4y
MegaWhoppingCosmicBookwyrm @RobStark92 Aawww! ❤️ That‘s so sweet! I‘m glad you were understanding and helpful, I‘m sure he was very grateful too. 😊 I remember reading Where The Red Fern Grows in 6th grade. I was in the backseat on a family road trip and started sobbing so horribly it startled my parents. They were seriously concerned, thinking I was somehow hurt. They made a valiant effort of not laughing once I could articulate what was actually wrong. 🤦‍♀️😅 4y

Pageturner1 that was one of the best Disney movies. everyone gets teary eyed😢 4y
MegaWhoppingCosmicBookwyrm @Pageturner1 I‘ve only seen it once, when I was a kid. I‘m planning a rewatch after I read this. I remember bawling my eyes out when I first saw it. I‘m sure I‘ll ugly-cry again. 😅 4y
Pageturner1 if anyone watches this movie and doesn‘t have a watery eye there is something wrong with them 4y

For my #ReadWithMrBook #TearJerker selection, I picked this one 😁! I chose it for a couple different reasons:

1. I can‘t recall re-reading as an adult a childhood favorite, and I wanted to see if my opinion would change.

2. I wanted to see if it could still make me tear up.

Animals going through a major crisis strike such a chord with me! 😩 The whole last part of the book I was all 🥺😭. It‘s still got it! Still enjoyed this little book.

Velvetfur I remember loving the film of this when I was a kid! 💜 4y
Butterfinger I did the same thing with Where the Fern Grows, but I read it with my fifth grade class. We were all ugly sobbing. 4y
MrBook @Velvetfur , the old live-action Disney one?! 😁 @Butterfinger , I can‘t do another one 🙈, that one does me in too. 4y
Velvetfur @MrBook oh yes, it was Disney! I forgot that, thanks for the reminder 😁 4y

#Two4Tuesday @TheSpineView

1. Yes. I have had the ending alone ruin a book I loved until that moment. Sometimes I come to terms with it and other times it never does.

2. Haha, yes. Sometimes it is the right ending but I still don't like it. It is more a hate to love situation. And the other times it is like my answer to the first question.

TheSpineView We all have those love ro hate books. Thanks for playing! 😊 4y

This is another that I missed reading as a child. It must be 30+ years since I have seen the movie, but I‘m pretty sure Disney‘s adaptation is pretty faithful. Even though I knew what was going to happen, I was captivated by the story of Travis and his Old Yeller. Disney did change what happens to Old Yeller slightly, but the result is the same. I cried just like I did when I saw the movie. #LitsyAtoZ

tammysue Loved this book and the movie, it definitely gives you all the feels.. 😥 6y

So this book is set in the Texas Hill Country which is pretty much where I️ live. There‘s bears in the book but no bears here. Did bears go extinct in this area between when the book was written and now or did the author not know that bears don‘t live here? 🤔

By then, they had the camper parked and the fire started. My mother kept yelling at me to put the book down and get out of the car. Nope, not til I finished it. Sad, but very good writing. 6y

I went to take this Book Riot quiz like some of y'all, but uh oh! I'm stumped on the first question; I haven't read any of these! 😂 Maybe I'm a bad dog + book lover?
Quiz here: https://bookriot.com/2017/11/09/quiz-literary-dog/

tpixie I read the 1st 2 as a child and CRIED!! As an adult, I don‘t want to read books about dogs that make me cry! Even if they make me laugh too! 6y
Caterina @tpixie I hadn't really thought about that, but I totally empathize with you! Especially since the first dog I ever loved passed away a few years ago at 16 years old, almost 17. 6y
tpixie @Caterina exactly! ( sorry 😐 for your loss) I‘ve had to deal with enough deaths of my dogs on my own. ❤️🐶❤️ 6y
See All 11 Comments
TricksyTails @Caterina @tpixie I also read the first two as a child and bawled. I think it was the first time a book made me feel heartache. I read A Dog's Purpose shortly after my 16 almost 17 year old dog passed. If you want to read a book about how the love of a dog can change your life read Dog Medicine.😭 I'm so sorry for your loss. I know how hard it is to be without a beloved friend. ♥️ 6y
Caterina @tpixie @TricksyTails It's so hard to lose the dogs we love. ❤️ Honestly I don't know if I could handle Dog Medicine. It's especially hard this year - I'm living halfway across the world from my family's dog (and my family too, haha), and no one has dogs as proper pets here, only guard dogs that live outside. 6y
tpixie @TricksyTails ❤️🐶❤️ 6y
tpixie @Caterina i understand. One of my adult daughters is living with us, going back to nursing school. Friday I took the dogs to the groomer and she sent out a Snapchat how sad she was that there was no one to greet her when she came home. Maybe a stuffed animal dog – they‘re good to hug! 6y
TricksyTails @tpixie 🤗♥️ 6y
TricksyTails @Caterina I'd definitely wait on Dog Medicine for now but for anyone who has ever loved a dog, it's a book you'll connect with and I think will love. That must be hard to be so far away from family, especially without a happy pup to keep you company. My pup sends you big hugs and slobbery kisses! 🐶😘♥️ 6y
Caterina @TricksyTails Hmm thanks for the recommendation, I'll put it somewhere down the list on my TBR! It is hard - thank you for the virtual puppy love! ❤️❤️ 6y
Vexingcircumstance The only one of those I read and remember is Where the Red Fern Grows. I avoided books about dogs after that. 6y

Old yeller is a excellent book for an AS or LC. It talks about a poor family on the Texas frontier, who find a stray dog that they adopt. He protects the family from many dangers. It is a Newberry award winner. ESOL principles are 1- teach questioning, 2-promote cooperation. UDL principles are 2.1-clarify vocab and 3.1-activate background knowledge. #ucflae3414f17

That was as rough a thing as I ever heard tell of happening to a boy. And I'm mighty proud to learn how my boy stood up to it. You couldn't ask any more of a grown man... It's not a thing you can forget. I don't guess it's a thing you ought to forget. What I mean is, things like that happen. They may seem mighty cruel and unfair, but that's how life is part of the time. But that isn't the only way life is. A part of the time, it's mighty good...

This is Josie, who came to live with us July 2015. Her genealogy is murky at best, but a neighbor said she resembled a "black mouthed cur," a Southern breed known for their great sensitivity, love of squirrels, and for being the same breed as Old Yeller!
