Sula | Toni Morrison
Two girls who grow up to become women. Two friends who become something worse than enemies. In this brilliantly imagined novel, Toni Morrison tells the story of Nel Wright and Sula Peace, who meet as children in the small town of Medallion, Ohio. Their devotion is fierce enough to withstand bullies and the burden of a dreadful secret. It endures even after Nel has grown up to be a pillar of the black community and Sula has become a pariah. But their friendship ends in an unforgivable betrayal—or does it end? Terrifying, comic, ribald and tragic, Sula is a work that overflows with life.

Yeah, 451 characters can‘t do this book justice. There is so much in this 176 page book. If I had a bookclub I would force this on them so I could have someone to talk about this book. This is my first book of Morrison and I would like to read more. This was challenging and I don‘t think I got it all. Instead of getting something nicely wrapped up in a box, I have dirt under my fingernails. I‘ll probably reread it some time later. A pick!!

Cinfhen Great review!!! Missed you!!! 3mo

sprainedbrain Excellent review, as always! 3mo
Reggie @SaturnDoo I work at a casino so I‘m gonna go with my token “Good Luck” on this book. I hope you like it but it‘s more like I hope you become intrigued by this book that has a lot to say about community and parent/children relationships, and how evil or the presence of a villain might be necessary, or how friendships are important in the most mundane and spectacular ways. There is a lot. So good luck!!! Lol 3mo
Reggie @Cathythoughts @sprainedbrain Thank you!! It‘s been a couple of hours and I still have that “I just read something that is better than I can explain it smile” on. 3mo
GatheringBooks any chance that we could have a literary version of our #horrorpostalbookclub #screamsbymail? i have yet to read this one and would love to read it alongside the others like @ephemeralwaltz @scripturient @kamoorephoto @BookishTrish @danibolahood - unless of course literary fiction is a no-no for the others. 🧚🏼‍♀️😂📚💕😍 3mo
ephemeralwaltz I looooooved Sula. Morrison's work is amazing beyond words. She is other-worldly. My first of hers was Song of Solomon and it. Blew. My. Mind. 3mo
ephemeralwaltz @GatheringBooks I would love that!! Literary fiction is what I read the most so I would be down. 3mo
GatheringBooks @ephemeralwaltz you were the first person that came to mind, actually! hopefully the others are good with it too. we could do it in 2020. or after round 2! 😂🧚🏼‍♀️📚💕 3mo
Reggie @GatheringBooks I haven‘t sent off my book yet. But if the others are ok with it, I wouldn‘t mind going back and doing a journal for this book instead and if everyone else is ok and Clara is ok rereading this one. 3mo
GatheringBooks @Reggie i was thinking along the lines of round 3 (hahahha), as i think the others may be expecting horror stories for round 2. unless, of course Sula also has horrifying elements thrown into the narrative. I know Beloved has that creepy ghostly vibe. 3mo
scripturient @GatheringBooks Literary fiction for round three sounds awesome! 3mo
Blaire My favorite of hers is 3mo
Lindy Back in the 1980s, a book-loving friend told me about a complaint from a colleague (they were nurses) that her new book club had chosen Sula. She had started the book but gave up on it. “It‘s all about Black people. They expect me to read a book about Black people?” I remember how sad my friend was, at having a coworker with that attitude. Thinking about it now, I hope that nurse went on to read books that opened her mind. 3mo
BookishTrish I haven‘t read this since the 1990s and I LOVED it then. Would be up for a reread for round 3. 3mo
Tanisha_A The first and only (till yet) book I have read of hers is The Bluest Eye! Her writing rips my heart right out! 3mo
rohit-sawant Terrific review, man! I haven't read her yet but hoping to change that soon! 3mo
Redwritinghood Great review! 3mo
danibolahood @GatheringBooks @ephemeralwaltz @BookishTrish @kamoorephoto @reggie @scripturient I am definitely not a fan of literary fiction for the most part but would definitely be for you lovely people to attempt to change my mind with your choices. As long as you don't mind having your notebooks full of my whining about not getting it lol 3mo
Reggie @Lindy what is it about nurses?!!! In college I remember there was this nursing major quoted in the campus paper saying that all gay people should just keep their dirty blood to themselves when it came to blood donation. Where is the empathy!!! I hope so, too about your friend‘s coworker. 3mo
Reggie @Blaire @Tanisha_A I will look into both. Still today at work I was walking around thinking about this book. 3mo
Reggie @rohit-sawant @Redwritinghood Thanks!! 3mo
Centique Great review! And man once you‘re on the Toni Morrison train, there is no getting off! I love love love her. I‘ve only read 4 so there‘s plenty more to go. I‘d love to see what you think of The Bluest Eye. So beautiful and so heart destroying all at once. Must bump Sula up the list! 3mo
Suet624 Ahh, you‘ve reminded me to sit down with one of her books. For years I was avoiding her because I knew she would rip my heart out. Now my heart has developed a bit of a callus and I think I can handle it. 🙂 3mo
Reggie @Centique @Suet624 Paula, depending how this month goes I might get to The Bluest Eye because I am intrigued. Sue, I think Sula would be a great place to start because it didn‘t rip my heart out but I was left stunned. I can‘t explain it. Just stunned. So much to think about. Both of you would like Sula. 3mo
ValerieAndBooks This was so good! Complex, but good. 3mo

Reggie I finished this today, and a page later”I was good to you Sula, why don‘t that matter?” “Being good to somebody is just like being mean to somebody. Risky. You don‘t get nothing for it.” Like wtf Sula. Am I wrong thinking she‘s a shady gangster or should I go reevaluate my reasonings for trying to do good and lead with nice. P.s. My reasons have to do with the Golden Rule rather than reciprocation. Lol this book. Sooo much to think about!!!! 3mo
sprainedbrain @Reggie Definitely a lot to think about. Sula as a character is so ambiguous that I didn‘t know what to think of her at first, but I‘m still thinking about this book days later. She‘s beyond shady and downright mean, but she‘s such a product of her environments. Still, I think we stick to the golden rule! 3mo

I read Toni Morrison in high school (?) but I clearly need to go back and read everything. It's so clear to me now, how many writers are trying to be Toni. Every word matters, every character is flawed and human, and this is a five-star read.
.
And this is my last book for the 2018 reading challenge from @thereadingwomen - under the category of Nobel Prize Winner. (I'll post the full list later in the month.)

Dorianna Sula is my favorite Toni Morrison book! I‘m glad you enjoyed it so much. 6mo
ephemeralwaltz SULA IS AMAZING. Excited to see it getting more love. One of my 2018 reading resolutions was to read all of Morrison's fiction but I failed miserably. 2019 it is! 6mo

ephemeralwaltz I did! A Mercy, Home, and The Bluest Eye. I want to read Jazz next and I'm planning on leaving Beloved as my last! Song of Solomon was my first and I. was. blown. away. I knew right away that I wanted to read all her fiction. have you read others of hers? :) 6mo
ReadingEnvy @ephemeralwaltz I feel like I read one that was an Oprah pick but I honestly don't remember it and feel I should reread! 6mo
Wenz Beloved and Song of Solomon are both breathtaking pieces of literature. I truly believe the world would be a different place of everyone had read them. Both would be worth additions to your reading list! 5mo

In this novel Morrison looks at 2 childhood friends, Nel and Sula. They grow up together in the “bottoms” of Medallion, Ohio (the black part of town in the hills) in the 1920s and 30s. Nel marries young, has kids, and stays in town. Sula goes to college and spends 10 years away. A good book that looks at a place as much as at the people in it. #1001books #reading1001

As always Morrison leaves me so conflicted by the end of her books, always so dark and twisted her tales of families and relationships always leave you with lots to think over by the end, things that will leave you thinking for a long time after you finish the last page.

Her books are tough reading. Her writing leaves you emotionally drained. Devoid of everything. You run. You try to hide, because she‘s coming for you on every intimate level. You want to disappear because the air is too thick to breathe and the reality is too bleak and dismal to deal with. Yet you chose to see it through because you hope for some type of redemption, some kind of freedom, some slice of peace...some impossible release.👇🏽

Random thought about motherhood: mothers will go great length to care and love their children, even when it does not present itself as "love"and is sometimes at the expense of their own sanity. When Hannah asks her mom "do you love me?" and Eva begins to list the ways she has "loved" , I understood how both women could feel being asked / having to answer that question.

Reading Song of Solomon last year made me realize that Toni Morrisin could be a new favorite author of mine but reading Sula confirmed it. Starting #litsypartyofone with my first Toni Morrison. I think I'll be reading more...

elizabethlk I haven't read Sula yet (but got a copy), although I have read a couple of Toni Morrison's books (The Bluest Eye and Home). She is so brilliant. 1y

This is my second book of #2018 and my second Toni Morrison. I am just so in awe of her writing, I can't even explain it. This novel is impeccable and I savored every word ❤

I just got a used copy of Sula by Toni Morrison. When I got home I found that an old picture was being used as a bookmark. I have been eager to find any old family pics, so I thought this person might want to get their photo back. Luckily they had put their name and number inside the cover. I gave her a call and she said if she hasn't missed it already then she doesn't need it but she was grateful for the call. She also says I will love it :P

Bookzombie That was so sweet of you! (edited) 1y

Mehso-so

I don't think Toni Morrison is for me. I thought the characters in this book were interesting. I thought some of the language in this book was beautiful. The story was kind of all over the place at times. With all that being said, there is just something about this book that I really disliked. I don't really know how to put it into words. I have been trying to figure it out all evening and I am at a loss.

Toni Morrison dives straight to the center of women and friendships. The writing seems to include many undeveloped characters and story lines, but at its heart takes a look at the life long friendship journey of Nel and Sula. So much of this story is heartbreaking and tragic.
