A blistering debut driven by the raw, whip-smart voice of Percy James, a fearless sixteen-year-old girl whose search for her missing mother leads to an unexpected discovery and a life-and-death struggle in the harsh frozen landscape of the upper MidwestAs a blizzard bears down, Percy James sets off to find her troubled mother, Carletta. For years, Percy has had to take care of herself and Mamaa woman whos been unraveling for as long as her daughter can remember. Fearing Carletta is strung out on meth and wont survive the storm, Percy heads for Shelton Potters cabin, deep in the woods of northern Michigan. But when Percy arrives, there is no sign of Carletta. Searching the house, she finds Shelton and his girlfriend drugged into oblivionand a crying baby girl left alone in a freezing room upstairs. From the moment the baby wraps a tiny hand around her finger, Percy knows she must save hera split-second decision that commences a dangerous odyssey in which she must battle the elements and evade Shelton and a small band of desperate criminals hell-bent on getting that baby back.As the storm breaks and violence erupts, Percy will be forced to confront the haunting nature of her mothers affliction, and come to find her own fate tied more and more inextricably to that of the baby she is determined to save.Filled with the sweeping sense of cultural and geographic isolation of its settingthe hills of fictional Cutler County in northern MichiganSweetgirlis an affecting exploration of courage, sacrifice, and the ties that bind, a taut and darkly humorous tour de force that is horrifying, tender, and hopeful.Advance Praise forSweetgirlis a gritty, compelling novel of a world where even a sixteen-year-old must confront what Edith Wharton called the hard considerations of the poor. Mulhauser depicts his people and their landscape with uncompromising fidelity.Ron RashTravis Mulhausers Sweetgirl is a riveting novel about a bunch of drug addicts and drug dealers and boozers and quasi-orphans and quasi-parents dealing with the prospect of a missing baby girl during a massive snowstorm in northern Michigan. This sounds grim, and it can be grim, but this book is also far, far funnier than it has any right to be. If youre a fan of Charles Portis and Denis Johnsonand if youre not, you should bethen this is book is exactly what youve been wanting, what youve been waiting for.Brock Clarke, author ofThe Happiest People in the WorldTheres a big old neon heart pulsing on every page of Sweetgirl, like the sign to a bar you cant help but enter. I felt thrilled and shocked, and I couldnt stop turning the pages. Travis Mulhauser is a writer to be reckoned with.Lindsay Hunter, author of Ugly Girls and Dont Kiss MeIn its dark and deadpan hilarity,Sweetgirlreminded me of other great chroniclers of the criminal element found in our upper MidwestTom Drury, Jim Harrison, the Coen Brothers in Fargo. But Mulhausers Cutler County, a place of numbered days and last chances, is a part of that country weve not seen before. Nor have we heard it described in a voice like Percy Jamess, filled with true wit, cunning, and the unwanted wisdom of a child denied a childhood. This novel comes on like the blizzard at its center, and leaves you dazzled and dazed not only by how much Travis Mulhauser knows, but how deeply he cares.Michael Parker, author ofAll I Have in This WorldTo try to nail down what Mulhauser is doing in Sweetgirlto say its a comedy or a tragedyis to do the book a grave disservice. Its far too large of heart and full of ambition to call it any one thing. Like its young narrator, Sweetgirl seeks first and foremostand, finally, onlythe truth. It is a beautiful, harrowing, startling achievement. And its one hell of a great story.Drew Perry, author of Kids These Days

I really liked this book. Both perspectives shine a light on the really hard to discuss and largely gray area of addiction's moral compass and one's ability to contain their addiction.

I truthfully think this scenario could happen anywhere in our country. I also think this story could easily be turned into a movie. The focus of this book is simple, the characters only slightly complex in the viewfinder in which we see them though.

It reminded me a bit of “A Winter‘s Tale” – which I also liked. Some aspects of the ending were a bit too over-hasty for me but I liked the relationship between Portis (🧡) and Percy. I also liked that Mulhauser isn‘t squeamish with his characters.

And, once more, if that is where drugs lead you, I made some right decisions in my life.

No light read but definitely recommended.

I try this one. Even if I‘m not sure if I persevere for long. Might be I find it too strenuous.

But who knows … If the story and writing is good I might manage an hour, although I feel somewhat wrenched. About an hour after having taken my medicine I am allowed to eat.

This is my next novel/fictional read.
To be honest I can‘t recall what it‘s all about and/or why I put it on my wish list. Maybe it was because it‘s a debut. 🤷🏽‍♀️

Anyway, I‘ll start it and I‘m looking forward to the story it will take me.

This was a story full of characters that I really enjoyed despite their flaws. I think the author did a tremendous job of creating characters I will keep with me. I also think this story of a teenage daughter trying to save her addicted mother is one that a lot of my students will enjoy and some may relate to.

Buechersuechtling Thanks for this review that made me curious – and lucky me, my library has it. So it‘s stacked and put on my wish list. 😃 5y

Started this book yesterday hoping to read it while snow piled up outside but alas....Reports of a Portland snowpocalypse were greatly exaggerated. We got a dusting at my house. Some other neighborhoods got a bit more. But today it's all sun and shine. Still damn cold though so when Percy almost gets frostbite...girl, I feel you. ☃️❄️

#GetMovin #day7 #Wasted In this heartbreaking novel everyone is wasted except 16yrold Percy James. A storms coming in Northern Michigan & Percy‘s meth addict mother is missing. Used to being the adult, she heads up into the mountains to her mums dealer boyfriends cabin, but instead of her mother she finds a baby girl slowly freezing to death while the baby‘s mama & Shelton lay in a drug stupor. Taking the child with her, she ends up being pursued.

I'm from Phoenix, AZ, so I love books that take place in snowy places. This book is about a teenage girl named Percy who is looking for her meth addicted mother. When she turns up at the dealer's farm house, she finds a baby, alone and neglected. This short novel follows Percy on her journey to get the baby to safety during a horrible blizzard. I laughed, I cried, I shivered.

First of all, I should've saved this book for winter. All the snow and cold based imagery fell flat as I sat by the pool on a hot July day. But I liked the characters, and the fact that Mulhauser kept everyone in a gray area - no one was completely good or bad. I was expecting a thriller, it was more than that but not quite enough for me if that makes sense.

#JuneTunz #day5 #Resistance Percy, the lead character in this novel is all about resistance. Resisting the abuse she's suffered, resisting giving in and ending up a drug addicted no hoper like most of the people in her life, including her mother, and resisting leaving a defenceless baby behind to die from either the cold or the horrible neglect it was growing up in. She's an absolute hero as far as I'm concerned.

Cinfhen Sounds like a must read! Is it very dark? 7y
Lizpixie @Cinfhen it is very dark, but also its inspiring as Percy overcomes her upbringing. Well worth a read, it was an @Liberty recommendation. 7y

Here's one from this morning in SF 😍.

This is the book I finished while in line at Disneyland over the weekend. I devoured it. It's quiet, but so powerful and tense and there are sentences in here that brought me to my knees (in my mind of course). It reminded me of All the Ugly and Wonderful Things in so many ways. A title I like to say out loud & that rings in my ears even today. It will break your heart and end the way you need it to.
