Browsings: A Year of Reading, Collecting, and Living with Books
Browsings: A Year of Reading, Collecting, and Living with Books | Michael Dirda
Dirda's latest volume collects fifty of his witty and wide-ranging reflections on literary journalism, book collecting, and the writers he loves. Reaching from the classics to the post-moderns, his allusions dance from Samuel Johnson, Ralph Waldo Emerson and M. F. K. Fisher to Marilynne Robinson, Hunter S. Thompson, and David Foster Wallace. Dirda's topics are equally diverse: literary pets, the lost art of cursive writing, book inscriptions, the pleasures of science fiction conventions, author photographs, novelists in old age, Oberlin College, a year in Marseille, writer's block, and much more, not to overlook a few rants about Washington life and American culture. As admirers of his earlier books will expect, there are annotated lists galore of perfect book titles, great adventure novels, favorite words, essential books about books, and beloved children's classics, as well as a revealing peek at the titles Michael keeps on his own nightstand. Funny and erudite, occasionally poignant or angry, Browsings is a celebration of the reading life, a fan's notes, and the perfect gift for any booklover. "

I lowered my goal from previous years as I knew I was going to be very busy. Lots of rereads but an overall very enjoyable reading year.

Browsings collects the columns published over a year in an online magazine by Dirda, focusing on books and other bookish topics. There are a few pieces that aren‘t book related, but the voice and through line feel the same, so that worked for me. I found a lot to relate to in this book, with some snorting laughter and rueful smiles on my part.

Pickpick

Because I go back and forth between a meh and a pick, I‘ve decided to come down on the pick side because I liked it enough to finish it. For a book that‘s supposed to be about books, there were several essays that weren‘t about books or reading. Dirda‘s reading taste is eclectic but it‘s also obscure; I had never heard of many of the writers he discusses. I discovered today that my backyard is a jungle; I had no idea we had bamboo. #audiowalk

More of this today while walking. Today‘s annoyance was a couple of essays, in a book about books and reading, that were not about books or reading. We‘ve had our Christmas tree for more than a week; we finally decorated it today. 😄. #audiowalk

I was enjoying these essays until I listened to Dirda discuss the NYPL renovations that allowed them to add more computers. The essay reeked of privilege. He is not in favor of it; only the poorest of the poor don‘t own laptops. He feels that libraries should be providing only rare items or things that are too expensive for people to afford. I guess we should throw out those popular novels and not worry about internet access for everyone. 😡

I suspect that more than a few of us will find this Dirda article relatable:
https://www.washingtonpost.com/entertainment/books/in-turbulent-times-culling-my...

Lcsmcat Thanks for sharing! I started with the idea of “reading what I own” during the pandemic, but admit I‘ve been on ThriftBooks, more than once. 4y
LeahBergen Very relatable. And I recently did a sizeable cull myself. 😆 4y

vivastory @LeahBergen I'm going to begin a cull over the next month or so. Now that HPB has reopened I will probably sell a lot & then use that money to buy more books. As one does. 😂 4y
LeahBergen Exactly. I actually have a “bank account” (credit) at my local used bookshop. 😆 4y
Hooked_on_books What a fun article! I can see non-bibliophiles absolutely rolling their eyes at this, but I get it. 😆 4y

#MayMovieMagic #Day6 #DontStopMeNow #StarTrekSummerMay #Clues Don‘t stop me now, my year of reading so far hasn‘t been my most prolific, but it‘s certainly been my most eclectic I think. I don‘t think there‘s many clues to my personality in these 45 books, they‘re much too varied for that. Lots of graphic novels so far, plus more non fiction than I usually read & the most SciFi I‘ve read in a few years. What‘s your #2019InBooks like so far?

Cinfhen LOVE this post!!!!! #RebelReader #SlayEm 🙌🏻 5y
Cinfhen I‘ve listened to more audio then ever before and I‘ve read a TON of NF!!!! I don‘t really keep stats but I try to write down every book I read. Need to see where I‘m at. Im totally behind on my GoodReads reviews 🤪 5y
Megabooks I‘m reading even more nonfiction this year, too! Fewer audiobooks, mainly because I‘m having trouble getting time alone to listen! Great post! 5y

Kalalalatja I‘m audiobooking and lending books from the library like never before! Also, I‘m keeping up a trend from the last few years, with reading a lot newer books than backlist 📚📚 5y
RohitSawant Terrific post! 👏🏼👏🏼 5y
xxjenadanxx So awesome!! So far I‘ve read 100 books + 1 Graphic Novel. Mixed genre, lots of historic fiction this year and I‘m trying to read more Nonfiction as well. 5y

The snowstorm is starting. Can't wait to curl up in bed now that I'm home from work. I'm hoping to finish the last couple of essays in the tagged book and pretend like the weather isn't going to be a complete disaster when I have to go back to work tomorrow lol.

RadicalReader @brilliantglow best part of snow filled winter weather is being inside underneath a blanket and devouring billions of books 5y
brilliantglow @RadicalReader YES! It is really the only good thing about the winter haha. Though that was so much easier to do when I wasn't working 50+ hours a week lol I need to find a new job that pays more and is less in the way of book devouring. ❤❤ 5y

I had meant to post this this morning but got distracted reading. All this snow fell in a short period this morning and walking home from taking my daughter to school just made me want to curl up with a book and a tea. I say all this snow like there was a lot that fell but yesterday was a nice fall weather type day and the snowfall was unexpected.

Loving this book by Michael Dirda, full of essays about bookish things.

SW-T Snow always look pretty when it first comes down. Hope you had a nice reading session 😊 5y

brilliantglow @SW-T thank you, I did in fact almost finished one book! I agree it does. You can tell that we are expecting quite a bit of snow because they ploughed my street right away this morning. It's normally one of the very last in the city to get done since it's just a small residential Avenue. 5y
SilversReviews @brilliantglow Ok...so you definitely get more snow than we do. 5y
brilliantglow @SilversReviews possibly sometimes. Ontario is pretty large and they get much more snow in Northern Ontario than we do where I am in South-eastern Ontario. 5y

Mehso-so

Finally finished this collection of columns by Michael Dirda. There is no question that he is intelligent, passionate about books, nerdy, and excited to talk about reading. However, this collection was so lukewarm to me. He has a very specific niche he reads, which incidentally doesn‘t overlap with mine; as a result, I couldn‘t relate or find much interest in most of his recommendations. Some columns were great but I was kind of bored overall.

Redwritinghood I read this awhile ago, but remember feeling the same way. 6y

I agree with Dirda nothing beats a physical book!

MaGoose Although I have a boatload of e-books on my e-reader, I still love a physical book better. The thing is, I could never house all of the books that are in my Nook. The walls with the bookshelves would come tumbling down. Plus, I don't have to dust my e-reader, just clean the screen and recharge it in the morning. 6y

Suet624 So, so true. 7y
Izai.Amorim @vivastory @Suet624 There are studies showing the relationship between having books in the house and kids' performance at school. The more books, the better the grades. Reading the books or not, or having no books at home but access to a library doesn't change anything. The kids with books at home do better. I think the presence of books shows that parents value culture and education and transmit this value to their kids. 7y
vivastory @Izai.Amorim I don't have children myself, but I definitely believe those results. Showing children at a young age the importance of reading, and having books as a real presence, rather than an abstract going would be very important. 7y

vivastory @ReadOrDieRachel I really like Dirda's relaxed, conversational style. The essays reflect his eclectic tastes, which I greatly appreciate. In one article he'll discuss Yeats & in the following article he'll talk about visiting HP Lovecraft's birthplace on the way to a Sci-fi and Fantasy convention 7y
readordierachel @vivastory That sounds great. Is it criticism at all or just his own musings? 7y
vivastory @ReadOrDieRachel They're informed observations and musings. His volume of criticism is also great 7y

saresmoore I've had an aquarium before. It was not peaceful because all I could think about was how much work it was going to be to clean the damn thing. My kids learned about death (and the food chain), though. So you know, dwelling AND sleeping with the fishes... 7y
vivastory @saresmoore Haha, did you play Circle of Life in the background? Pets are a lot of effort. I've thought about adopting a kitten, but it's too much work. 7y
saresmoore True and it becomes difficult to travel. Our most recent cat adoption was already litter trained and she's a wild, roaming indoor/outdoor kitty now. She's very low maintenance except when she wants to drink water from the faucet. 😬 7y
