Princesses Behaving Badly
Princesses Behaving Badly: Real Stories from History Without the Fairy-Tale Endings | Linda Rodriguez McRobbie
You think you know her story. Youve read the Brothers Grimm, youve watched the Disney cartoons, and you cheered as these virtuous women lived happily ever after. Butrealprincesses didn't always get happy endings. Sure, plenty were graceful and benevolent leaders, but just as many were ruthless in their quest for powerandallof them had skeletons rattling in their royal closets. Princess Stephanie von Hohenlohe was a Nazi spy. Empress Elisabeth of the Austro-Hungarian empire slept wearing a mask of raw veal. Princess Olga of Kiev slaughtered her way to sainthood while Princess Lakshmibai waged war on the battlefield, charging into combat with her toddler son strapped to her back.Princesses Behaving Badlyoffers true tales of all these princesses and dozens more in a fascinating read that's pefect for history buffs, feminists, and anyone seeking a different kind of bedtime story.

Nice short book of princesses through the ages. It Nicole compiles just enough story to get the main points of their life brith to death and why they are remembered the way they are. From the insanely rich, to the considered insane. As many who went against the status quo were. Some stories made me want more, which is the intended closure point. Added realism; Not often a happy ending

Started this one last night. When I bought it (a while back) I was inspired to learn/read more about badass women in history! It is not disappointing! These women are amazing! (Also it will help me get a bing for #BookSpinBingo)

annahenke I still have to get to this one! 3y

The idea of this book is awesome! Reading about women who were not your typical princess was so inspiring besides that fact that they were crazy, selfish, or adulterers, they did things their way!

There were alot of stories and most if them very pretty entertaining. I would not say it was a great book. As they say, "Well behaved women rarely make history." And this book is proof.

I needed a book to finish #nonfiction2019 and this one practically jumped off my library shelf on my last visit. Detailing the lives of princesses /well standing women throughout history who refused to succomb to societal expectations, this book gives a more realistic view of the fairytale.

Went with a little fun non-fiction this time. It was a fun little book and taught me a lot about princesses I didn't even know existed and some new facts about those that I did know. #audiobook #scribd #historicalnonfiction #princess #royalty

A collection of mini-biographies of (mostly) princesses that attempts to separate fact from the mythology that surrounds many of these historical figures.

This book was chocked full of stories. So so many. Some were given a little more time then others. I liked some, usually the ones with more details. Still, it was cool to hear about so many women across the world and the last few hundred years.

If you like serious history with lots of facts and endnotes, this book is not for you. Interesting tidbits in short, easy to read sections of biographies about all kinds of princesses in our history including the crazy, the sad, and the really badass. Great read for Women's History Month.

It‘s definitely looking more like fall on my afternoon walks since harvest is wrapping up around here.

This is a really interesting book of short biographies about princesses remembered for their less than respectable behavior. There are several strong women with fascinating stories included.

I really enjoyed this book. It's about princesses throughout history and how they lived, died, became scandalous or famous. I was a little thrown by some of the princesses it spent more time on (based on myth or unsubstantiated stories) and which it spent less time on. Otherwise it was a great read for a quick overview of many princesses. #nonfiction #audiobook

McRobbie gives a witty, detailed view of historical women who had the power and weren't afraid to use it. Definitely not a kids' book - these princesses aren't Disney, and neither is history - but highly enjoyable for people who like the messier side of history.

3/3 #royals. The one I chose to feature here, Princesses Behaving Badly, is because it covers various princesses from all over the world, not just Europe; it's written in a fun style (think mental floss magazine style), and many of these princesses were really just strong bad-ass women who defied norms of the times and/or got bad reputations simply because they were pawns in a male-dominated world.
