Heartburn | Nora Ephron
Is it possible to write a sidesplitting novel about the breakup of the perfect marriage? If the writer is Nora Ephron, the answer is a resounding yes. For in this inspired confection of adultery, revenge, group therapy, and pot roast, the creator of Sleepless in Seattle reminds us that comedy depends on anguish as surely as a proper gravy depends on flour and butter.Seven months into her pregnancy, Rachel Samstat discovers that her husband, Mark, is in love with another woman. The fact that the other woman has "a neck as long as an arm and a nose as long as a thumb and you should see her legs" is no consolation. Food sometimes is, though, since Rachel writes cookbooks for a living. And in between trying to win Mark back and loudly wishing him dead, Ephron's irrepressible heroine offers some of her favorite recipes. Heartburn is a sinfully delicious novel, as soul-satisfying as mashed potatoes and as airy as a perfect souffl. From the Trade Paperback edition.

This is definitely the best novel to buy for your bestie who‘s going through a bad break-up; either they‘ll find it hilariously relatable, or it will simply remind them that there‘s light at the end of the tunnel and, someday, they‘ll look back on it all and laugh. A ‘thinly veiled‘ account of the moments in which a heavily pregnant Ephron realises the failure of her second marriage due to her husband‘s infidelity.
I would not describe it as ‘side-splitting‘, but it is certainly amusing and a quick read. None of the characters are particularly likeable, which probably makes it easier to smile at Ephron‘s trademark wit as her world falls apart.

Nora Ephron has a great wit and it shows in the dialogue which I enjoyed but I didn't like a single character. Not a single one.

The MC, Rachel, is a wet blanket that allows herself to get stepped on not just once, but multiple times in the book by different people in her life. It made me question a lot of her choices which lead to where she is at and what the book is about.

This book would make a great companion read with Carrie Fisher‘s Postcards from the Edge. I also listened to this on audiobook (finished in 2 days!). The narration by Meryl Streep (who I think also plays the MC in the movie adaptation?) is fantastic. I could listen to Meryl read the phone book.

Fans of Ephron‘s films will recognize the wittiness that exudes from the writing, although this novel emphasizes bitterness over the romcom optimism.

dabbe Funny coincidence. Streep was the MC in HEARTBURN and played Carrie Fisher in the movie POSTCARDS FROM THE EDGE. 🤩🤣😍 9mo

I just finished listening to Heartburn; an oldie but a goodie (goodish may be more accurate). Read by Meryl Streep. A humorous look at the rise and fall (mostly the fall) of her marriage. Not a great book but it was engaging & entertaining. A good "listen" in small chunks on my short commute.

I really tried to like this one but I honestly could not stand the main character, Rachel.

The story was loosely based on Nora Ephron's 2nd marriage and it was supposed to be comical. Instead, I heard a character try to tell (more like complain) about her life. She appeared very shallow to me. It sucked what happened to her but at the same time, meh. I give 2⭐️...barely.

In this 'novel' we meet Rachel a famous TV cook, who is pregnant when her journalist husband has an affair with Thelma, a woman with a neck as long as an arm and a nose as long as a thumb. The story is peppered with bitter humour + simple recipes.
Loved this book from a director whose films made a generation laugh.

Audio was definitely the way to go as I think Meryl‘s narration made me enjoy this more than I would have otherwise. A comedic look at a divorce that felt a little one note to me. It didn‘t help that so much of the humor was dated in a way that was uncomfortable. Since this based on Ephron‘s own divorce from Carl Bernstein I did find that I cared enough to google whether or not he ever married the woman he had an affair with.

I loved this book SO much. Partly because it was exactly what I needed after My Dark Vanessa, but this was perfectly well written, funny, subtly observed, relatable, just all round an easy to read but still literary marvel. Very short but I appreciated it like a small perfect dessert. If you ever want a palette cleanser after reading something heavy this was perfect

Finished this one over the weekend and the movie this morning. Very satisfying read for me especially since my divorce just finalized last month. If you are a fan of covers I recommend checking out Copeland‘s cover of Coming Around Again by Carly Simon which is basically the theme song of the movie. Fun to read a book in an afternoon! And a fun book to read, about love, marriage, infidelity, serious topics but handled with a light touch. Some things have not aged well (too many minor characters with "funny" accents or racial stereotypes). But Ephron's wisecracking voice and witty insights are pretty irresistible.

Out of the blue last night my husband turns to me and asks “Would you rather have dinner with Woodward or Bernstein?“ (great random question BTW)

My answer: Woodward, because if I had dinner with Bernstein I wouldn't be able to stop myself from asking him if he was as horrible as he seems in this dishy book!

Now I have to dig out my copy (with this cover) and read this gem again!

Mogoeg @Ruthiella I'm sure he was (and is) very charming! It is more a comment about my innate inability NOT to ask one half of the Watergate duo about the bestselling Roman a Clef that his ex-wife - one of America's most beloved humorists & screenwriters (RIP) - wrote to skewer him for being a cheater (and a pompous self-righteous one at that)! 3y

Finished reading Heartburn today. I don't think it was spectacularly amazing but Rachel's emotions resounded within me and for that I can't help but like it so much. I love well-delivered monologues of characters where they describe what and how they feel. I've always thought the more detailed the emotions, the better. I think Rachel was a good storyteller. I also listened to a bit of the audio book and Meryl Streep was wonderful.

Started reading Heartburn by Nora Ephron this week. This part in the book reminds me how very strange the human memory is. I have been realizing lately that so many things in my life seemed to be one way or the other when I had been in the moment, but in retrospect it was completely different and sometimes even more different when heard from someone else's perspective.

Well that‘s the longest it‘s ever taken me to read a thin book! This tale of a pregnant lady finding her husband has cheated was written in a overly chatty, long sentence, stream of consciousness form that did little for me. There are some great, honest and heartwarming quotes but overall I did not care for the protagonist and it all felt a bit cutesy yet aged!

Don't read this when the weather has been cold for a thousand days, and spring feels like it will never come. It seems so depressing. Everyone in a relationship is cheating on their partner. Everyone has been married before and has been cheated on. Then they marry again and cheat. Occasionally someone cooks something tasty (there are recipes included) which seems rather random.

Meryl Streep narrates the audio version, which is one nice thing!
