Heartburn | Nora Ephron
Is it possible to write a sidesplitting novel about the breakup of the perfect marriage? If the writer is Nora Ephron, the answer is a resounding yes. For in this inspired confection of adultery, revenge, group therapy, and pot roast, the creator of Sleepless in Seattle reminds us that comedy depends on anguish as surely as a proper gravy depends on flour and butter.Seven months into her pregnancy, Rachel Samstat discovers that her husband, Mark, is in love with another woman. The fact that the other woman has "a neck as long as an arm and a nose as long as a thumb and you should see her legs" is no consolation. Food sometimes is, though, since Rachel writes cookbooks for a living. And in between trying to win Mark back and loudly wishing him dead, Ephron's irrepressible heroine offers some of her favorite recipes. Heartburn is a sinfully delicious novel, as soul-satisfying as mashed potatoes and as airy as a perfect souffl. From the Trade Paperback edition.

In this 'novel' we meet Rachel a famous TV cook, who is pregnant when her journalist husband has an affair with Thelma, a woman with a neck as long as an arm and a nose as long as a thumb. The story is peppered with bitter humour + simple recipes.
Loved this book from a director whose films made a generation laugh.

Audio was definitely the way to go as I think Meryl‘s narration made me enjoy this more than I would have otherwise. A comedic look at a divorce that felt a little one note to me. It didn‘t help that so much of the humor was dated in a way that was uncomfortable. Since this based on Ephron‘s own divorce from Carl Bernstein I did find that I cared enough to google whether or not he ever married the woman he had an affair with.

I loved this book SO much. Partly because it was exactly what I needed after My Dark Vanessa, but this was perfectly well written, funny, subtly observed, relatable, just all round an easy to read but still literary marvel. Very short but I appreciated it like a small perfect dessert. If you ever want a palette cleanser after reading something heavy this was perfect

This was a light-hearted telling of the end of a marriage. I really didn‘t expect to laugh but the author was so funny and Meryl Streep did an amazing job narrating.

A humourous witty take of finding out your husband is having an affair.
The introduction to this edition is written by Ephron - in which she sets the backstory of the book and how it is "thinly veiled"

Finished this one over the weekend and the movie this morning. Very satisfying read for me especially since my divorce just finalized last month. If you are a fan of covers I recommend checking out Copeland‘s cover of Coming Around Again by Carly Simon which is basically the theme song of the movie. I love it but you have to listen on YouTube because their cover album isn‘t on any of the music streaming services. #Scarathlon #TeamSlaughter +6 pts

Fun to read a book in an afternoon! And a fun book to read, about love, marriage, infidelity, serious topics but handled with a light touch. Some things have not aged well (too many minor characters with "funny" accents or racial stereotypes). But Ephron's wisecracking voice and witty insights are pretty irresistible.

Cathythoughts Nice review! Sounds good 👍🏻 2y

I was inspired to read Heartburn after hearing a discussion of it on the podcast You're Booked. It feels outside of my usual wheelhouse, but my last read was so heavy and long, that this short, light(ish), comic novel is a relief! Maybe time to expand my wheelhouse.

Out of the blue last night my husband turns to me and asks “Would you rather have dinner with Woodward or Bernstein?“ (great random question BTW)

My answer: Woodward, because if I had dinner with Bernstein I wouldn't be able to stop myself from asking him if he was as horrible as he seems in this dishy book!

Now I have to dig out my copy (with this cover) and read this gem again!

Leftcoastzen 👏😄 2y
Ruthiella I only saw the movie, but he must have had something charming about him that she fell for in the first place? 2y
Mogoeg @Ruthiella I'm sure he was (and is) very charming! It is more a comment about my innate inability NOT to ask one half of the Watergate duo about the bestselling Roman a Clef that his ex-wife - one of America's most beloved humorists & screenwriters (RIP) - wrote to skewer him for being a cheater (and a pompous self-righteous one at that)! 2y

Reading this was like spending a couple of days with my in-laws: it felt like a visit to a NY/NJ family in the 80‘s. It‘s funny but also sad, as it‘s the story of a breaking marriage. A very short fast read with a few recipes sprinkled throughout. There‘s a pasta recipe I‘m going to try, since I‘ve suddenly got a lot of time to cook 👩‍🍳. There‘s also a recipe for Lima beans and pears casserole 🤢. Won‘t be trying that one!

I haven't read Ephron before but I really liked her spicy, irreverent humor. BUT overall I was not a fan of the characters in this book. I didn't root for the love interests and was pretty apathetic about the ending, but I still enjoyed the entertainment factor and Jewish recipes sprinkled in.

Finished reading Heartburn today. I don't think it was spectacularly amazing but Rachel's emotions resounded within me and for that I can't help but like it so much. I love well-delivered monologues of characters where they describe what and how they feel. I've always thought the more detailed the emotions, the better. I think Rachel was a good storyteller. I also listened to a bit of the audio book and Meryl Streep was wonderful.

Started reading Heartburn by Nora Ephron this week. This part in the book reminds me how very strange the human memory is. I have been realizing lately that so many things in my life seemed to be one way or the other when I had been in the moment, but in retrospect it was completely different and sometimes even more different when heard from someone else's perspective.

This is my 2nd Nora Ephron book and I liked it even more than the 1st one! It is billed as fiction but is a thinly veiled memoir, as she talks about her second husband and his infidelity in one of her other books. She‘s hilarious, vulnerable, whimsical yet also very relatable. It‘s a quick read and by the end of it, I wanted to reach through the pages and kick her cheating ass husband where the sun don‘t shine! I loved this! ❤️ 5⭐️

Well that‘s the longest it‘s ever taken me to read a thin book! This tale of a pregnant lady finding her husband has cheated was written in a overly chatty, long sentence, stream of consciousness form that did little for me. There are some great, honest and heartwarming quotes but overall I did not care for the protagonist and it all felt a bit cutesy yet aged!

This is a story about a woman who is pregnant with her second child and just found out her husband is having an affair. It was amusing at times, but it also felt pretty dated and the main character was hard to root for. I did enjoy the enter woven recipes and foodie talk. (And the narration by Meryl Streep.)

Don't read this when the weather has been cold for a thousand days, and spring feels like it will never come. It seems so depressing. Everyone in a relationship is cheating on their partner. Everyone has been married before and has been cheated on. Then they marry again and cheat. Occasionally someone cooks something tasty (there are recipes included) which seems rather random.

Meryl Streep narrates the audio version, which is one nice thing!

I found this laugh out loud funny and poignant. It's very much a product of a specific time and place (early 80s, rich New York Jews) which I guess some people might count against it but I liked (except for the occasional offhand racism)? It's an incredible strongly realized voice in a 1st person narrative. Very much in the vein of When Harry Met Sally (which I also love) but darker and less romantic. Great #audiobook performance by Meryl Streep!

CaseyTheCanadianLesbrarian I guess I forgot to say this is about the dissolution of a woman's marriage and also there are recipes woven throughout. Those two things are important. 4y
