War Horse | Michael M.B.E Morpurgo
A powerful tale of war, redemption, and a hero's journey--now available in paperback! In 1914, Joey, a beautiful bay-red foal with a distinctive cross on his nose, is sold to the army and thrust into the midst of the war on the Western Front. With his officer, he charges toward the enemy, witnessing the horror of the battles in France. But even in the desolation of the trenches, Joey's courage touches the soldiers around him and he is able to find warmth and hope. But his heart aches for Albert, the farmer's son he left behind. Will he ever see his true master again?

SHIT. I forgot how big Augmentin pills were 😭😭 Guess I don‘t need to eat lunch since I‘ll be full after this pill. Sick day #2 and almost done with War Horse.

I‘m always having problems when seasons change. A sinus infection sounds like nothing but my chest, throat and ear burns. My tongue is swollen, my joints hurt. And I can‘t speak. So here I am, stuck in bed, listening to audiobooks. 😅 #livinginthedesert

War has never been close to home for me, I don't have any family that has served and it's always been a distant topic in my house. Reading this book is the first time I've ever truly considered war as anything different from just existing, and I'm so conflicted.

War horse has a piece of my heart as well as my innocence, and not to be dramatic, but my world will forever be tinged with the ugliness Joey faced in this book.

cherinium Your comment about war being a distant topic in your family stood out to me. I DO have family that has served. My grandfather is a WWII vet, and I have an uncle who served in Vietnam. But, because of the trauma they experienced, war was never discussed in our family either. I'm ashamed to admit that it has often seemed very abstract to me. I've been trying to educate myself more in an effort to understand the trauma my loved ones faced. 7mo
Jeralyn @cherinium abstract is a good way of putting it, and I don't think there's any shame in that. I feel like you can't truly understand until you've faced it firsthand, like reading a summary of a book and assuming that you know the everything there is to know about the story. (edited) 7mo

I didn't expect to get so emotional at this book! Written from the horse's perspective, it gives a whole new view on WWII.
Book 4 done.

Changed my mind for book 4 of the #24in48 readathon. I started Cabal by Clive Barker and couldn't focus on it, so tried this and sank right in. Loving it so far, but I need to turn in for the night, two hours behind schedule though...

Maybe it's because it's been such a long time since last l read children literature, but l expected a bit more from this book.
It felt very distant. I was never completely evolved, maybe because l found some of the events unlikely.
I'm happy l read it, but l did expect more.

Daisey Sorry to hear it wasn‘t better. I will say this is my favorite of this author‘s books; I‘ve been pretty disappointed with all the others I‘ve read. 1y
JazzFeathers @Daisey The story won't bad. I especially liked the last part, in spite of many things being quite unlikely. It just felt very far away, so much so that l never really felt involved. And maybe this edulcorated version of WWI is really not for me 😉 1y

JazzFeathers @Daisey The muffins turned out really good. I'm still experimenting with how to have them rise properly. I will get there... though if someone knows the secret, please share 😆 1y

I was trying to finish Northanger Abbey for the #NorthangerAbbeyReadalong #JaneAustenReadalong (for which l'm hopelessly behind) when l suddenly realised that l should really start the second book for the #BookAWeek challenge.

Let's see whether l can read a bit of both today

Daisey Both great books! 1y

A brilliant book that was made into a stunning piece of theatre which i was lucky to see a few years ago. The creation of mechanical horses was amazing - if you haven't seen it I'd recommend and there wasn't a dry eye in our family outing.

Moray_Reads The play is incredible, pure theatre magic. Our whole row shook with the sobbing. Totally overwhelming. 2y

I loved War Horse in London's West End. I'd never read it so decided to use to fulfill several challenge tasks -- book w. animal in the title/also a play/a movie you've already seen/you can read in a day. I'm glad I listened because it's different from the play/movie in several ways, including that the book is narrated by the horse and it has a less intense ending. It made me sad to imagine horses at war, but it was a great listen!

5* - A brilliantly written and emotional story! If you had told me that a book written from the POV of a horse would grip me and I'd finish it in 1 day, I'd have laughed at you!

I fell in love with Joey, felt his fear, pain and joy. I wish there had been more, but at the same time, the book was perfect ❤️

Today I graduated from Newcastle Uni with a 2:1 in my English degree - an already overwhelming and exciting ceremony was made even better by an appearance from Michael Morpurgo who received an honorary degree from the uni, an absolute favourite author of mine from childhood with classics such as Kensuke's Kingdom, Private Peaceful and War Horse 🎓📚❤️

A few of my books that relate to the Great War in a way or another.
I don't know why, l've become fascinared with #WWI lately (in addition to the 1920s) and l wonder whether these times we are living are to be blamed for that

PirateJenny Maisie Dobbs is fantastic! I've read the first three books. I need to get back to the series. 2y
JazzFeathers @PirateJenny l've just read this first one. Dind't blow my mind away, but it was nice. I'll probably read more 😊 2y

Have seen the stage production and the film and have now, finally, read the book. I was surprised at some of the major differences but there is no doubt in my mind that the book was the best way to tell this story. Morpurgo is a beautiful writer.

#day22 of the #Augustphotochallenge for @TheSpinecrackersBookClub definitely a challenge today #booksaboutinnocence I found this one hard to define but eventually settled on Morpurgo because his books write wonderfully about the innocence of children and animals but at the same time show a harder side of life.
