Capturing the Devil
Capturing the Devil | Kerri Maniscalco
In the shocking finale to the bestselling series that began with Stalking Jack the Ripper, Audrey Rose and Thomas are on the hunt for the depraved, elusive killer known as the White City Devil. A deadly game of cat-and-mouse has them fighting to stay one step ahead of the brilliant serial killer---or see their fateful romance cut short by unspeakable tragedy. Audrey Rose Wadsworth and Thomas Cresswell have landed in America, a bold, brash land unlike the genteel streets of London they knew. But like London, the city of Chicago hides its dark secrets well. When the two attend the spectacular World's Fair, they find the once-in-a-lifetime event tainted with reports of missing people and unsolved murders. Determined to help, Audrey Rose and Thomas begin their investigations, only to find themselves facing a serial killer unlike any they've heard of before. Identifying him is one thing, but capturing him---and getting dangerously lost in the infamous Murder Hotel he constructed as a terrifying torture device---is another. Will Audrey Rose and Thomas see their last mystery to the end---together and in love---or will their fortunes finally run out when their most depraved adversary makes one final, devastating kill?

This story was an amazing series ender that didn‘t go silently into the night. There were many twists & turns that took place & on more than one occasion my heart was torn apart. The emotional evocation that was brought about left me feeling wrung out, but only in the best of ways! The depth of character development throughout this series for both Audrey and Thomas was truly illustrated in this story & many hard choices were made by both of them.

Fantastic conclusion to a wonderful series. Heavier on the romance and physical relationship than previous books, but I loved that aspect. Audrey Rose and Thomas Cresswell are one of my favorite literary couples.

The Shining was a re-read but it's still my favorite read this month. 🖤 Although I finished up the Stalking Jack the Ripper Series and it was amazing. Made some really great points about how society (even today) treats women that have a passion for something that doesn't seem feminine. It was a bit more romance than I'd like but it wasn't the typical toxic romance. It was quite sweet and honorable. Most all of my October were rereads 😂 😂

This was a great conclusion to the Stalking Jack the Ripper series. I've really enjoyed the tension between Audrey Rose and Thomas over the series. They have both been very entertaining. In this one they are searching for a killer in Chicago during the World Fair 🎡

I think I was more excited for this book than any other in the series! Sure, there were quite a few historical inaccuracies but there were also so many interesting facts added in that you wouldn't know about unless you're well versed in this case so big props to the author for that!

I do feel like the climax was a bit rushed. I would have liked to have seen more conflict there but other than that, I feel this is a great ending to the series.

Okay so I am HAPPY to say that this was a REALLY satisfying series ending for me. Authors just struggle so hard with doing that but this worked for me! I don't honestly think there's much to review. I loved that we focused on Audrey and Thomas more in this than any of the previous books. I loved that we saw the switch to America during this innovative time period. I liked the romance drama and the murder mystery was fun.

After a near heartbreak, I quickly recovered rooting for Thomas and Audrey Rose.
Jack The Ripper come back to life to haunt them, a ruined special day and fleeing to a land to find the true identity of their worst nightmare. The killer this time is after Audrey Rose and Thomas. I love how strong and true their relationship is. I could read these books for the rest of forever.Kerri is a genius and knows how to make you love the characters. 4.5/5 ⭐

Read the SJR series was amazing. It‘s the perfect fall read with its creepiness. I loved this series it dark in a very light way.
My favorite part is how Audrey Rose is so human, she had doubts, and she was passionate. She always believes in herself and is willing to take a leap of faith for what she believes in.

I‘m sad to say goodbye to Audrey, Thomas, and their families. But off to the next adventure!

Yesterday, I received (after a month, ‘thank you very much‘ Posts) my preorder of “Capturing the Devil”.
It was supposed to come with two dust jackets—the standard and the alternative—but I only received the alternative one because (somehow) the standard ones were finished.
At least, I was offered a partial refund to make it up for it.

The completion of a story arc & the series, this is a much stronger offering than the last two books but it was not for me. The author has moments of amazing lyricism but she‘s also inclined to broody hyperbolic angst & florid flights of language fancy, neither of which work for me. The story also messes with historical timelines, slips between 2019 vernacular & that of the late 1800‘s & uses a thoroughly implausible mcguffin ⬇️

GlassAsDiamonds to force the action along which irritated me. I suspect if you were a teenage girl with a love for gothic melodrama, neither of which I am, the style might appeal and there are some strong, memorable quotes but having finished the series, I‘m highly unlikely to read from this author again. Oh good lord... 🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️ Literally about to run off alone into the night to confront a stalking murderer in attire that prompted pages worth of angst two books ago and would have seen her thrown out of any actually respectable hotel if not arrested (trousers but in 1889) 🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️ Seems we‘re giving over continuity and historical accuracy to become a bad gothic melodrama. If only she‘d burned a note and worn a silk nightgown...🤦🏻‍♀️

Spoilers blanked out but this sort of deviation into florid flights of fancy is what‘s really turning me off this series. I‘d potentially understand it if it was a penny dreadful or a tropey romance but it‘s not. It‘s a decent book with a few glaring and frustrating historian errors but these hysterics are not even remotely my cup of tea.

TalecArashi Oof I'm reminded of my issues with the Guardians of Gahoole series... 😁 2mo
GlassAsDiamonds @TalecArashi oh damn! I have a t-shirt from the movie that I adore (previous work life!) and am often tempted to read them.... but not if it‘s similar to this, drove me crazy!!!! 2mo
TalecArashi I don't remember how the writing itself was, but it was the biological inaccuracies... I have a lot of tolerance for that sorta thing, but-- snakes don't have ears! Stop referring to "her ears" already!! ? 1mo

My September round up. It was a pretty good month for books and comics for me. I was surprised by how sad I was to see the Stalking Jack the Ripper series end. The 4th, and apparently final, book in this series does not disappoint. I very much enjoyed the story & the connection to the Chicago Murder House at the Worlds Fair. Audrey Rose & Thomas have made it to NYC & are finally being married when their ceremony is interrupted by a girl claiming to be his betrothed. Running from his father, they go to Chicago to investigate a connection to the Ripper murders & discover there are dozens of missing women.

Very much enjoying this 4th book in Maniscalco‘s “Capturing Jack The Ripper” series. After their disastrous term at Romania‘s best forensic school, then the chaos onboard the RMS Etruria with the Moonlight Carnival that culminates with Audrey Rose being injured, herself & her beau Thomas Cresswell, are now in NYC preparing for their engagement. But there‘s a serial killer on the loose, and his methods seem very familiar.🤔🔪 #SomethingWickedFall

I figured I‘d swap between library books and my #MountTBR to stop the slump I feel creeping up on me. This is a brand new addition but I loved the previous three so much it should definitely pick up my interest. It‘s 1889 & Audrey Rose & her partner-in-Crime, Thomas Cresswell, have finally landed in NYC after the mayhem onboard their ship. As soon as they arrive though, they are dragged into a murder case that reminds them too much of the Ripper.
