Turn of the Key
Turn of the Key | Ruth Ware
From the #1 New York Times bestselling author of In a Dark, Dark Wood, The Woman in Cabin 10, The Lying Game, and The Death of Mrs. Westaway comes Ruth Ware's highly anticipated fifth novel. When she stumbles across the ad, she's looking for something else completely. But it seems like too good an opportunity to miss--a live-in nannying post, with a staggeringly generous salary. And when Rowan Caine arrives at Heatherbrae House, she is smitten--by the luxurious "smart" home fitted out with all modern conveniences, by the beautiful Scottish Highlands, and by this picture-perfect family. What she doesn't know is that she's stepping into a nightmare--one that will end with a child dead and herself in prison awaiting trial for murder. Writing to her lawyer from prison, she struggles to explain the unravelling events that led to her incarceration. It wasn't just the constant surveillance from the cameras installed around the house, or the malfunctioning technology that woke the household with booming music, or turned the lights off at the worst possible time. It wasn't just the girls, who turned out to be a far cry from the immaculately behaved model children she met at her interview. It wasn't even the way she was left alone for weeks at a time, with no adults around apart from the enigmatic handyman, Jack Grant. It was everything. She knows she's made mistakes. She admits that she lied to obtain the post, and that her behavior toward the children wasn't always ideal. She's not innocent, by any means. But, she maintains, she's not guilty--at least not of murder. Which means someone else is. Full of spellbinding menace and told in Ruth Ware's signature suspenseful style, The Turn of the Key is an unputdownable thriller from the Agatha Christie of our time.

Wow! This book did not go the direction I thought it would. Most of the book was creepy and heading a certain direction. Then there was a twist near the end, and a final 😱😱😱 twist to wrap everything up in the last couple of pages. It was a fun way to spend 4 hours this weekend!

My library hold came in! This book was on order when I put it on hold. I‘m the first person to borrow it!

jillrhudy Almost one is smart enough to do this. Everybody should ask their librarians because you can't always do this in your online account but your librarian can do it for you. 1d
jenniferajanes @jillrhudy I seem to be able to do it online if the book is in the system as “on order,” but not if it hasn‘t been entered yet. I agree that it never hurts to ask! Our librarians are generally very helpful! 1d

A governess alone with weird children in an isolated house, complete with bitter housekeeper, mysterious caretaker, and unexplained bumps in the night? Yes, please! Penguin Random House Australia was kind enough to send me a copy for review. It‘s a very contemporary take, but the supernatural elements keep it in the vein of its predecessor, The Turn Of The Screw. My full review was sent to subscribers at https://www.keepingupwiththepenguins.com

Readswithcoffee I just started reading this, so I will read your full review when I have finished. The "creep factor" is high already! 3d

Another Ruth Ware winner for me that I finished at the rooftop pool at the Tropicana in A.C.
I did not guess any of the twists before they were revealed. This book was so much better than The Lying Game, which was the last one I read from her.

And yes those are my pale knees in the shade. I'm not a fan of the summer 🌞.

Crazeedi Nice! Enjoy yourself !! 3d
hermyknee Oh that‘s good to know because I couldn‘t even finish The Lying Game 2d

So i finshed this last night and needed to “sleep on it” to see how i felt about it. This book was like this mornings weather, pretty underwhelming. I fell asleep repeatedly trying to read it so i brought it on vacay to finish it. The first “a-ha” moment came and went and i wasnt like “oh shit”. Actually tbe whole book was like that. Not my favorite by her!

It‘s been a few years since I read and enjoyed Ware‘s debut novel, so I was excited to see this one offered through #BOTM- and I really loved it! The isolated atmosphere and the creepy house all made this a genuinely riveting read! I shivered, figured out most of the plot‘s twists and just had a lot of fun reading it! I‘m looking forward to catching up on the books of hers that I missed!

I can't believe I almost passed on this one! "Turn of the Key" is now my favorite Ruth Ware book. Nobody builds suspense like her. Every twist and turn of the plot had me clicking the pages at rapid speed, which definitely caused me to lose sleep lol. Also, talk about the creepy kid angle! Too bad Stage hadn't read this book before she wrote Baby Teeth. Ware demonstrates how to characterize a disturbed child on a believable level. The ending..wtf?

I love the way Ruth weaves her stories. I found myself guessing and jumping to conclusions (none of which were right) more then the main character. And she knows how to read the readers just right. I remember thinking this book was starting to drag some and then the character said “I know I you‘re wondering where I‘m going with all of this.”
Another great book by Ruth Ware. I really enjoyed it.

Wow! Ruth Ware does it again. This might be my new favorite book of hers. It is thrilling, full of twists and turns, everything is well-plotted, and Ware knows just how to make you feel unsettled without feeling spooked. The Nanny Diaries meets The Turn of the Screw - a haunted house story for the smart home era! (You will *never* want a smart home after this). 5 stars.

My first semester of grad school just ended, which means I have almost four weeks off to catch up on reading!

I finished The Turn of the Key a while ago, but never got around to posting about. I really enjoyed it! It was creepy, had me second guessing, and had me completely shocked by the twists. It was a bit slow at the start and rushed at the end, but to be honest, it didn‘t bother me that much. A solid thriller, in my opinion! #NetGalley

This is such a creepy and spine chilling read! There are nods to Henry James and Daphne du Maurier as the tension and sense of foreboding build up. It certainly had me on the edge of my seat at times. It‘s beautifully and atmospherically written. I loved the setting, it worked so well within the confines of this story. The descriptions of the Scottish mountains and countryside are vividly depicted. Superb and eerie stuff!

I don‘t read too many #suspense books (they make me nervous lol), so I don‘t know what really makes one excellent in comparison. But this was really, really good. It had me intrigued from the beginning and on the edge of my seat many times throughout. I really felt for the main character. I kept trying to piece things together. I had guessed part of it (I‘m good for that), but it was so much more. Highly recommend.
