The Guest Book
The Guest Book: A Novel | Sarah Blake
A novel about past mistakes and betrayals that ripple throughout generations, The Guest Book examines not just a privileged American family, but a privileged America. It is a literary triumph. The Guest Book follows three generations of a powerful American family, a family that “used to run the world.” And when the novel begins in 1935, they still do. Kitty and Ogden Milton appear to have everything—perfect children, good looks, a love everyone envies. But after a tragedy befalls them, Ogden tries to bring Kitty back to life by purchasing an island in Maine. That island, and its house, come to define and burnish the Milton family, year after year after year. And it is there that Kitty issues a refusal that will haunt her till the day she dies. In 1959 a young Jewish man, Len Levy, will get a job in Ogden’s bank and earn the admiration of Ogden and one of his daughters, but the scorn of everyone else. Len’s best friend, Reg Pauling, has always been the only black man in the room—at Harvard, at work, and finally at the Miltons’ island in Maine. An island that, at the dawn of the twenty-first century, this last generation doesn’t have the money to keep. When Kitty’s granddaughter hears that she and her cousins might be forced to sell it, and when her husband brings back disturbing evidence about her grandfather’s past, she realizes she is on the verge of finally understanding the silences that seemed to hover just below the surface of her family all her life. An ambitious novel that weaves the American past with its present, Sarah Blake's The Guest Book looks at the racism and power that has been systemically embedded in the U.S. for generations.

I went to the first annual Strawberry Full Moon Book Swap tonight at Watermark Books in Wichita. I chose Less. They also gave each of us a wrapped ARC. I scored with The Guest Book! I think I‘m more excited about that one than the one I chose!

mdm139 I am so jealous. Watermark is my favorite indie book store. I went to a book club every week there when I lived in Wichita. 6d
FeastOfFiction @mdm139 I don‘t live here, but if I did, I‘d be at a book club every week! My daughter lives here so I go every time I visit her. It‘s truly the best bookstore. 6d

Three generations of the Milton family spanning from the 1930s to present day. The book focuses on the social inhumanities during this period, telling the reader that families thoughts/values can change with each generation, but core family values will remain.

Have you ever heard the phrase “the sins of our fathers?” That kept popping up in my mind. There‘s so much truth to it in this story. In their minds they felt so far above everyone else they couldn‘t see it. White privilege, racial inequality + guilt all played a role in the three generations of the Milton family history. Blake‘s writing was perfection + kept me turning pages. 4 ☆ #bookclub

A little slow to start, as Blake‘s writing is VERY descriptive...... But once I found my groove with it, I really enjoyed this multi-generational family saga centered around a family‘s private island.
On the surface there is elegance and privilege, yet hidden beneath this shallow veneer is an underbelly of secrets, lies and prejudices. This should be a great discussion at the B&N bookclub in June.... lots to talk about!

This book was all the stars to me. I'm on a really good book roll right now and this is something that really made me think and also had me crying at times. I urge everyone to give this a try - although the pacing can be slower at parts so I know this won't be for everyone.

This book raises some really interesting questions. Can we change who we are or who we are meant to be? Can we ever really make a big change in the world? How would we have reacted at specific times in history (mainly WW II and the civil rights movement). It was good and it was really long!

Avanders Oh my gosh, are you serious about that view?! 🤤😍😍 4w

that feeling when you finish a book, 481 pages later. This book was a little slow to get into, but paid off beautifully in the end. A tale of life choices, secrets, and regrets that spans generations, and their effect on a family. Perception of history and “knowing” people unfolds across decades, as we see the heartbreaking effects choices can have on the lives of others, like a cascade of dominoes. Beautifully written with compelling characters.

This is a nuanced portrait of privilege across three generations, with the private island the central family both downplays and clings to serving as an apt metaphor. I enjoyed the way Blake worked with her themes, but her style was a bit slow for me. She favors some lengthy descriptions (you'll know by the first paragraph if her style is for you).

Kaylamburson I have that same book sleeve!! From Out of Print?? 3mo

Bailedbailed

So, this will be my first bail of 2019 (hopefully there won‘t be a lot because I hate giving up on a book). I don‘t know why but I just can‘t get into this one. I‘ve tried and tried but manage maybe a few pages at a time before I get bored again. I keep putting off reading it and it sits and collects dust so I just know it‘s time to bail ☹️ I‘m sure others will love this book, it just wasn‘t for me unfortunately.

WhatWouldJaneDo I'm in the middle of this now. How far did you get? It's definitely kind of slow; it picked up enough for me that I'm enjoying it well enough but I'm also more motivated since it's an ARC and I feel obligated to read and review before the release. 3mo
CatsCoffeeAndBooks @WhatWouldJaneDo I‘m about half way. I wish I had more motivation to finish it. I feel bad because it‘s an ARC but I also don‘t want to make myself read something that is not holding my interest 3mo
WhatWouldJaneDo @CatsCoffeeAndBooks yeah it's not a short one either, don't torture yourself over it. I'm just shy of halfway so we'll see. I have a hard time dnf-ing stuff as it is though so I'll probably finish. 3mo
CatsCoffeeAndBooks @WhatWouldJaneDo I hate not finishing stuff too! Ugh. Oh well, win some and lose some I guess. 3mo

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ an ARC of #TheGuestBook arrived a few weeks ago, and while it took me a bit to get fully involved in the story, I fell in love with the entire thing. Old money, new money, politics, family, keeping up appearances, and the choices made to keep it all in tact. Wow! A sweeping story of four generations of the Milton family. Blake‘s writing allows you to envision the family‘s island home, feel their hurts, and become one of the family.
