Several years ago, my boss at the time introduced me to the old fashioned. Not every bartender can make one right, but finding a good one is a treat.

I‘m not eating chocolate right now, but when I do it‘s Reese‘s. The raisins are a close second.

Once again, thank you @TheBookHippie for choosing a delightful book! There is something soothing about reading this story of kindhearted, unspoiled, Polly who visits a friend in the city, and is exposed to a different life.
I loved the quote, “When you feel out of sorts, try to make someone else happy. You will soon be so yourself. “ Polly‘s Mother

Finished this one! I read it on my Kindle - it takes me longer to read ebooks, I don‘t know why. Anyway dare I say I liked it better than Little Women? Polly seemed so real to me and someone I would have liked to have as a friend. Very enjoyable. #19 #BookSpin #8 #DS February #BFC22 #ReadMyRoom #ChildrensClassicRead2022 #ReadYourShelf #MGMarchThroughTime #MiddleGradeMarch

I read this years ago, and remembered it with more fondness than I felt on this re-read. I do love Polly and her determined independence, her strong sense of self, and her moral conviction; however, I don't care for her wayward, reckless leading man, and wasn't feeling their ending. The chapter with Polly and her artistic, somewhat bohemian friends could've filled the whole novel for me; down with vain Fanny! Up with Becky, the feminist sculptor!

Andrea313 Sneaking into #ChildrensClassicRead2022 on this; thanks, @TheBookHippie ! 2y
TheBookHippie 🤍 I had similar thoughts. I attribute it to when it was written … but blech on him as well. 2y
Andrea313 @TheBookHippie I get it: he changed for the better at the end, which of course we saw coming...but it took long enough to get there, and in every chapter leading up, he was flippant, rude, selfish....blech indeed! 2y

LeahBergen What a pretty edition, though! 2y
batsy That's really interesting but I see what you mean! Tom was annoying and reckless at first, and rude, but I felt he had to do a bit of growing up before he deserved Polly and Alcott wouldn't just let him get by on riches and charm. 2y
Andrea313 @batsy Yes, he definitely learned and grew, and deserved her by the end! I just wish the reader could have seen in him what Polly saw throughout, because for me, there wasn't much to recommend him during much of the action. 2y

Published in 1869, this reflects the ideals of the time, but it's a fascinating insight into Alcott's feminism & her discomfort with capitalism. There's a great chapter where Polly & Fanny hang out with their bohemian female friends & have a "wild" lunch, propriety be damned. I loved the underlying idea that men & women should be held to the same moral standards. It's a sweet story about valuing one's inner life over external trappings.

batsy It's also pretty interesting for situating the Shaw's family riches amidst the boom & bust cycle & what happens when bankruptcy hits. Being a children's book, the fantasy here is that life can be fixed amidst the financial rubble, which is a nice comfort read in big 2022. Thanks for bringing this little gem our way @TheBookHippie ! #ChildrensClassicRead2022 2y

bookandbedandtea This is my favorite Alcott. Probably because I was exactly the right age a million years ago when I first read it and every reread over the years has brought me back to that time. 😊 2y
LeahBergen I‘ve actually never read this Alcott but have always meant to. 2y
batsy @Suet624 @LeahBergen It's kind of like Little Women in that people who didn't have the patience for that might not like this one, too. But it was exactly the comfort read I was craving. (And might, in a way, be less saccharine and more interesting than LW!) 2y
batsy @paulfrankspencer The lyrics are fantastic. 2y

Amiable I love this cover—it reminds me of a favorite painting by Childe Hassam. 2y
batsy @Amiable I was particularly drawn to this cover when I was looking up different editions, as well! I'm not familiar with his paintings so thank you for the reference—it'll be nice to discover new art 🙂 2y
Amiable @batsy He was an American impressionist painter in the late 1800s-early 1900s. I have a special fondness for his work “Boston Common at Twilight“ --- my husband and I met at college in Boston and he gave me a reproduction of the painting when we were dating. It's still hanging in our bedroom now, more than 30 years later. :) (edited) 2y
batsy @Amiable Oh, I love stories like that 💕 I just looked it up and it's a beautiful scene, tinged with melancholy. (Also, I've always wanted to visit Boston :) 2y
Centique I have such fond memories of reading this book as a kid. I remember the bit about the honestly made gingerbread crumbling in her pocket as she sat eating one of the fancy ices. And the high speed phaeton accident. I am keen to reread it, but I know it won‘t feel quite the same! 2y
batsy @Centique I'm so glad I finally got to read it! I think I might even prefer it to Little Women a bit? Though it's been awhile since I read that and I remember it so fondly as well and am a little nervous to re-read it now. 2y

I don't want it to be finished. It made me miss my Nanny who taught me to appreciate old fashioned stories and LM Alcott. Her stories are quaint, but the characters do have faults. Polly could be eaten up with envy, but acknowledged it and worked on being better. Fannie and Maude could be bratty, but wanted to be a worthy friend. #ChildrensClassicsChallenge @TheBookHippie

I enjoyed this book, but found the archaic language and cultural references made for slow going, as I kept stopping to look up words or customs. However, I learned a lot about life in the 1870s. And I adored Polly, the main character. I think she may be my new role model! She had a true servant's heart.

Do any of you have a book that is so much a part of you that you almost hate to have other people read it for fear they will blow it off and not realize that it's actually a part of your essence? This is one of those books for me. I love it in a way that I can't even explain - it's one of the most influential books of my childhood, and one that even during this most recent reread I still found to be challenging and inspiring. I can't even ⬇

TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) pretend to be objective about this one. I'm sure some would find it rather dull or prosy or too, well, old-fashioned, but for me this book is like a big fluffy blanket. Polly's gentle optimism and love for life was so influential to me growing up, her willingness to serve those around her, her modesty of her heart, her hardworking attitude - Polly has always been one of my fictional role models ⬇ 2y
TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) reminding me that even though “We can't any of us do ALL we would like, but we can do our best for every case that comes to us, and that helps amazingly.“

This was February's #ChildrensClassicRead2022 and I was delighted for the excuse to reread this one @TheBookHippie

batsy Lovely review and it's great hearing about books that were like a security blanket for us when we were kids. It's my first time reading it; I just started and am very much enjoying the gently humorous tone so far. 2y

TheAromaofBooks @Roary47 @TheBookHippie @Leftcoastzen @batsy - It's interesting for me sometimes to think about books that I really love so much and have reread multiple times vs books that are actually a part of who I am as a person. @TheAromaofBooks I read this because I remembered you saying it was one of your favorites. 😀

I'm a fan of many other Alcott books, and I have reread several since I was a kid, but for some reason this one wasn't on my radar.

I found this to be an absolute delight to read. Polly was such a charming character. I will definitely be reading this again at some point.

TheAromaofBooks Yay!! I'm so glad you enjoyed it. I reread this one this month, too!! Polly's gentle optimism, hardworking attitude, and modest heart were so influential to me growing up, and even on this most recent reread I still found myself noting passages and being encouraged to make my life 'a sweet & stirring song, helpful while it lasted, remembered when it died.' ❤ 2y

This one was sort of uneven for me. I didn‘t totally connect to the characters, and found myself skimming certain chapters, then getting caught up in others that I thought were really charming. I surprised myself by liking second half of the book with the adult version of the characters better. Though of course I missed grandma. #ChildrensClassicRead @TheBookHippie

I am close to finishing this book and it's pretty thick. There are 19 chapters. The book is in the book series Puffin Classics and is written by Louisa May Alcott. A short summary on this book would be:

Polly Milton never questions the way she is - until she goes to her cousins in the city. Her cousin Fanny looks too glamorous to be Polly's age, and wouldn't be caught dead playing in the snow. Will Polly ever learn the new ways? Read it to see.

2. I have a lot of comfort reads, but the tagged book is definitely towards the top of the list. Polly was a real role model for me growing up.
3. Not much of a sports girl, although I've married into a Browns family!
4. A Tale of Two Cities.

Prolly is a simple country girl who is visiting the well to-do Shaw Family. Over the years, her friendship with them causes her some inner turmoil. She is quite happy with herself but is often found wanting to partake in a more lavish lifestyle.

You‘ll come to love Polly and the Shaws as the grow up together and maneuver society. I‘m ashamed to say I was unfamiliar with this one but I found it sweet and charming. #pop18

1. Wild animals: Wolf, Domesticated: Hamsters are sooo cute.
2. An Old Fashioned Girl by Louisa May Alcott
3. Blue, Light Blue, Violet
4. I like both but I can't drink them as they give me migraines.
5. I haven't read much outside. So, I can't tell what I like.
6. Not much of a flower person. Tulips look okay. I think.

My #literarybestfriend would be Polly from Louisa May Alcott's An Old Fashioned Girl. We have similar personalities, values, and interests.
Runner ups include Frederic, From the Leo Lionni story of the same name. He would tell the best stories.
Jo Mach would also be an awesome friend to have.

A kindle is nice, but I just wish I had more stories in true book form—you feel me? 😭
