An Abundance of Katherines
An Abundance of Katherines | John Green
From the #1 bestselling author of TheFault in Our Stars -Michael L. Printz Honor Book - Los Angeles Times Book Prize Finalist - Katherine V thought boys were gross. Katherine X just wanted to be friends. Katherine XVIII dumped him in an e-mail. K-19 broke his heart. When it comes to relationships, Colin Singleton's type happens to be girls named Katherine. And when it comes to girls named Katherine, Colin is always getting dumped. Nineteen times, to be exact. On a road trip miles from home, this anagram-happy, washed-up child prodigy has ten thousand dollars in his pocket,a bloodthirsty feral hog on his trail, andan overweight, Judge Judy-loving best friend riding shotgun--but no Katherines. Colin ison a mission to prove The Theorem of Underlying Katherine Predictability, which he hopes will predict the future of any relationship, avenge Dumpees everywhere, and finally win him the girl. Love, friendship, and a dead Austro-Hungarian archduke add up to surprising and heart-changing conclusions in this ingeniously layered comic novelabout reinventing oneself.

Colin is a child prodigy. He has dated 19 girls, all of them with name Katherine. When hes dumped by K-19, him and his friend Hassan go on a road trip for the summer and he works on a theorem that can depict when a relationsip is going to end. Being a lover of math, I thought this was such a cute book. It was a light and fast read. It made me realize the love for John Green and his writing style and how I missed reading his books.

Although I have trouble buying that Hollis just invited two teen boys to move in for the summer, this book was highly entertaining. I love the random trivia, and John Green uses great vocabulary and description.

1️⃣ One doesn't typically pick John Green for a funny book, but I don't know that I've ever laughed out loud so much while reading fiction. Warning: lots of cursing.

Really enjoyed it. Surprised by how much, actually. I did like Turtles All the Way Down last year, but maybe this one more so.

I‘d never read a John Green book before. I know, I know. But I typically don‘t like sad or sappy books. (Before you ask, I‘ve only read a couple by Nicholas Sparks, too.) I thought this was a very cute and upbeat book. Very different from his usual style.

What do you think about these Penguin minis? I'm not sure I'm sold on them. I particularly don't like the idea of reading them vertically. Just don't think I could ever get behind that.

Also, the ad says "portable, readable, collectable." Unlike regular books? Idk. What say you guys?

Whodunit85 That font has got to be itty bitty, or the books quite thick. I love Penguin but this seems unnecessary. 1y
Gaylagal2 Yeah, I don't think so. Not sold on this😒 1y
Traci1 @Whodunit85 right? I'm thinking it probably is teeny font. Just this week I found myself having to increase the font size on my kindle, so the idea of itty bitty font makes my eyes ache. 1y

This was a reread, and i needed a book that wasn't very sad and with less engaging characters. The book itself is funny, there are plenty of laugh out loud moments. That being said, this is not one of John Green's best, but if you're just looking to pass time without being emotionally attached to the book, this will do

BiblioLitten I haven‘t picked up a fun, light read in a while (this year). I think I should give this a try. Never read John Green because I thought his books were sob stories. 1y

Moving onto something different! The only John Green book I haven‘t read and the only one my library is missing. But I found it used for very cheap last week. This seems to be his least popular book and I‘ve found his older work to be pretty mediocre (although I like his experimentalism). My expectations are being kept low!

WhatThePuck I, like you, have found his work mediocre. It's brave to say that in some circles. I liken him to a used car salesman. He seems to be selling you a great product, but after awhile certain things start to nag at you. He knows his demographic well and he writes to that demographic to make money, not bc he seems to enjoy writing. I feel you age out of his style. Once you're past the age of teenage ideals of grandeur, his books fall flat. IMHO 🤣 2y
hgrimes @WhatThePuck Oh, I thoroughly enjoyed “Fault in Our Stars” and “Turtles All the Way Down”. I turn to John Green when I need a quick, light read. But his earlier novels have recycled characters and are more clearly geared towards teens exclusively, so they‘re a little underwhelming to me, but they have some good points and still fulfill the need for a light read! 2y
WhatThePuck Even Fault in Our Stars had me rolling me eyes. Hard. I haven't read the other one. 2y
hgrimes @WhatThePuck I have two close friends who I nearly lost to cancer very young, and Turtles is about my friend, Anxiety, so both books struck me hard! But John Green‘s writings are far from being for everyone. 2y

kamoorephoto @dsfisher Ah, yes, it is hard to tell with cats...Hailey did decide upon abandoning her feral past, and accepting life with me, that being inside meant a life of leisure (ie no need to even bother to make a run for the outside anymore if the door was left open, and she can even lie with her head on the food bowl if she wants). In her senior years, she has definitely made napping her career. 2y

It was an easy and entertaining read, particularly the dynamics between Colin and Hassan. Though I feel the only things I learned from it:
1. All Katherine's are just all b####es - as I was reading this ALL my friends started telling me their own evil Katherine stories 😱🙉
2. That somebody who feels the need to control and explain everything in life has to learn the hard way themselves that you just can't

Of all of the Green books that I‘ve read, I think I find this one the least charming. The math is extraordinary. The quirks of a child prodigy, fascinating. But this book lacked depth in a lot of places. Though there were three main characters, you never get to really know any of them fully. There are loose ends in the entire book. Nonetheless, I read from beginning to end.

I‘ve heard people say that this is not John Green‘s best book, and that it is not as good The Fault in Our Stars. But to me that is alright. Not every book needs to be.
John Green demonstrates his strengths as an author with his great understanding of dialogue and how some people think, and I found the main characters enjoyable and I liked their character development.
The story is small, but it is charming. Like how some small towns can be.
