I Owe You One
I Owe You One | Sophie Kinsella
The irresistible new standalone from Sophie Kinsella is a story of love, empowerment and an IOU that changes everything . . . Fixie Farr cant help herself. Straightening a crooked object, removing a barely-there stain, helping out a friend . . . she just has to put things right. Its how she got her nickname, after all. So when a handsome stranger in a coffee shop asks her to watch his laptop for a moment, Fixie not only agrees, she ends up saving it from certain disaster. To thank her, the computers owner, Sebastian, scribbles her an IOU but of course Fixie never intends to call in the favour. That is, until her teenage crush, Ryan, comes back into her life and needs her help and Fixie turns to Seb. But things dont go according to plan, and now Fixie owes Seb: big time. Soon the pair are caught up in a series of IOUs from small favours to life-changing debts and Fixie is torn between the past shes used to and the future she deserves. Does she have the courage to fix things for herself and fight for the life, and love, she really wants? ***** EVERYBODY LOVES SOPHIE KINSELLA: ***** 'Left me giddy with laughter. I loved it' JOJO MOYES 'Life doesn't get much better than a new Sophie Kinsella novel' RED 'One of the most relatable books I've read in a long time, I couldnt put it down.' 2.75⭐️

I was going to dnf it but I keep seeing reviews that it gets so much better in the second half. This set up for a great story of Fixie learning to stand up for herself, fighting the stereotype of needing a man as the head of the house and so much more. That sounds great, but is maybe 1/5 of the book. The rest of it is Fixie being obsessed with fixing things and putting herself into uncomfortable situations over and over and over again.

Schnoebs @Birdsong28 I‘m using this for the 2019 prompt. I might as well get something out of it for how much I didn‘t like it lol #52booksin52weeks 3mo

This was good for a quick lighter read. It did have me yelling at the characters to just TALK to each other, but I feel that's common and wouldn't have made for such a story.

Sophie Kinsella is a definite guilty pleasure for me! The narrator of the audiobook was perfect and brought Fixie to life with all her befuddled charm and foibles. A quick and enjoyable listen with some great characters (and admittedly some awful ones) and lots of drama. And don‘t forget the happy ending of course! 🌟🌟🌟🌟

Ridiculous bordering on absurd...

And yet, if you can make it to chapter 10 (read past the annoying Ryan saga), completely charming and cozily comforting. @Librarybelle is running a #cozyinthesun mystery event, but this is my idea of a cozy summer read - complete with the perquisite eyerolls, smirky smiles, oohs and aahs of a sunny summer read! A slight pick with so-so reservations!

P.S. Adorable #covercandy!

Librarybelle Kinsella is perfect summer reading - light, funny, with plenty of eye rolling moments! I love her books! 4mo

Umm no. I finished it, even though I didn‘t want to because it was a bit annoying. I liked Fixie‘s inner dialogue better than her physical actions and conversations. She was a doormat and I think she had bad taste in men. I was over it before it was over 😑

I have loved the Shopaholic series in the past, so it pains me to be on the verge of bailing on this one. I am 128 pages in, the protagonist is a doormat, and the man she loves is a supreme egotist. Even Bindi looks bored, stretched out on the couch. I‘m setting it aside for now, but we‘ll see if I make that permanent or not.

akckitty Too many good books out there to be hung up on the bad ones! ;) 4mo

It‘s the weekend! I took a couple days off and I intend to get through this one. Of course, I always intend to read more than I do. Then I get distracted 🤷🏻‍♀️

I‘m seeing mixed reviews with this book, and it‘s been a minute since I‘ve picked up a Kinsella. Hoping I like it well enough.

⭐️⭐️ When I first became a reader in my early 20s, Kinsella was a favorite. It‘s funny how your tastes can change over time. I haven‘t enjoyed her books in a bit, so I haven‘t read anything since 2012‘s I‘ve Got Your Number. I wanted to give this a shot after seeing friends‘ positive reviews. I should‘ve skipped it. Super slow start, insufferable characters, frustrating situations. There‘s no reason it should‘ve taken 450 pages to tell this story.

Aswenson Good to know! I‘m much more at the age of Kristin Hannah books than Kinsella for an easy read. 😊 I‘ve enjoyed a couple of hers though! 6mo
MallenNC This isn't my favorite of hers either. Of her recent ones, I think My (Not So) Perfect Life is the best. 6mo

Such a light, fun read. I hadn't read a Sophie Kinsella book in years, but was pleased to discover that I remain a fan. Her books are fun and beachy, but still well-written and internally consistent, which can be difficult to find. I also appreciate the character development of not only the main character, but also supporting characters. If you're looking for a fun escape (with the bonus of being set in England), this one's for you.

I see all the mixed reviews for this one and I‘m ok with being the odd person out: I loved it! I alternated reading + listening (brilliantly narrated by the fabs Fiona Hardingham 🙌🏻).

Yes, Fixie Farr is taken advantage of for part of the story, and yes, the other characters are sometimes jerks—but all of this leads to Fixie gaining the courage to step into her true self. Lots of complexity under the top layer of this story!

LOVE the meet cute!

I enjoy Sophie Kinsella‘s books even though I know what is going to happen before I read them. The characters in this one weren‘t as quirky and enjoyable as they are in her other novels. They are actually quite frustrating. It‘s a quick easy read and ends well. But I found myself frustrated for Fixie.

I have enjoyed many of Sophie Kinsella‘s books and ultimately I liked this one too. But for much of the book I hated the secondary characters and even the MC annoyed me bc she wouldn‘t speak up for herself. Of course, like all Kinsella books, everything turns around in the end. My (Not So) Perfect Life is my favorite of her recent ones, and I wish this one had been more like it.

2.5 stars. This has to be one of the most frustrating books I have read in a long time. The characters were so over the top and the main character‘s internal dialogue was like nails on a chalkboard. I almost quit this book several times but I had to know how it ended. What a sweet ending it was too. Ugh, I so wanted to like this book but it was just too aggravating for 90% of the time. The last 10% sure was darling though.

I hate to write negative reviews.. But ‘I Owe you One‘ kind of disappointed me.
The story was so naive and stereotyped. A girl idealizes her childhood love and thinks she still loves him. Then, she meets a handsome stranger and fells in love with him. Then, they are together out of blue, then, they are not, and at the end they are back together.

I've always enjoyed Sophie Kinsella's books in the past, but this one was barely a so-so. The heroine was too wet, the hero was too nondescript and the secondary characters were too obviously awful (and far too easily reformed in some cases). Maybe I'm just getting too old for this sort of thing.

I have a love hate relationship with all her books; I either love them or they drive me insane because i want to throttle the heroine. This falls in the latter category; she had zero self-esteem and didn‘t grow as the book went along.

I was truly frustrated by Fixie's doormat behavior throughout. The best part of the book might have been Fixie and Stacy's conversation about certain stock items (spoiler below).

JoyBlue Fixie asks Stacy to stop giving sex tips to customers. Stacy says they come up in conversation. Does Fixie really think all the customers use bag clips on food bags or spatulas in the kitchen? 8mo

There is nothing Fixie Farr can‘t fix - for good or bad she just can‘t help herself. A random act of kindness and a stranger‘s IOU sets in motion a string of events, that are at once funny, cringeworthy and touching. Not necessarily on par with Sophie Kinsella‘s other books, but a whimsical, fun, lighthearted read nonetheless. ⭐️⭐️⭐️ #netgalley #40in2019TBR

Farr's is a family establishment that sells merchandise for a reasonable price. Fixie, her Mum, brother and sister run the shop with a small staff. Fixie's brother and sister do not care for the shop the way Fixie and her Mum do. Her Mum goes on holiday and Fixie is responsible for the shop and keeping the family intact.
Fixie's love life is in a funk too.
This Sophie Kinsella book reminds me of the style of the Shopaholic series,
