The Wife: A Novel | Meg Wolitzer

Pickpick

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️: I had seen the movie, and this is my first Wolitzer. Her writing just swept me away. Really enjoyed revisiting this story in book form. #BookToFilm

Cathythoughts Great writing! I really enjoyed this book too 6d

I actually LOVE both movie adaptations, Swedish and American, but I only own the American one ^

For Week 1 of #maymadness #booktofilm

@RadicalReader @ReadingMermaid

RadicalReader Cool covers can‘t wait to see the movie myself got the book 4mo
Palimpsest I haven‘t read the book, but I‘ve seen both movies. I like the Swedish one better. So good! I really should read this, but I have so many books on my to read list and I often struggle with reading a book I‘ve seen the movie version of, even if it has other inclusions. That‘s why I prefer reading the book first. Oh well. 4mo
ShyBookOwl @Palimpsest I'm the same. Once I see the movie I don't usually go back. In this case, I saw Let Me In and then read the book. The book is WAY darker. Then I saw the Swedish movie. It's closer to the book but still significantly tamed down. I think both movies brought different parts of the book to the forefront and I really appreciate that. 4mo

Readergrrl I just watched the American version the other night! 4mo
ShyBookOwl @Readergrrl Nice! Did you enjoy it? 4mo
ElizaMarie I didn‘t realize this is a book. I‘m so interested 4mo
jb72 I really liked the book! I‘ve only seen the non American movie. 4mo
ShyBookOwl @ElizaMarie just be warned, the book is very dark. Trigger warnings for almost everything. It's hauntingly beautiful though. 4mo
Powered_By_Plants I had no idea there were two movie adaptions . I‘m just coming to the end of the book so will look into both 😁 . I agree it makes for some difficult reading at times but definitely beautiful at other 💕 2mo
ShyBookOwl @Powered_By_Plants absolutely. It's incredibly powerful! The Swedish adaptation is closer to the book, but I like the direction the American movie takes too 😊 2mo
Powered_By_Plants @ShyBookOwl i will be hunting down both versions then 😊 2mo
ShyBookOwl @Powered_By_Plants 👍🏼 enjoy!! 2mo

Holy cheesy 70s Batman! LOL 😂

Megabooks Oh yeah! It‘s fantastic! 🤣🤣 6mo
OrangeMooseReads @Megabooks and there are multiple random big names in it. 6mo
Megabooks @OrangeMooseReads I know. And the picture was so bad I had trouble differentiating between all the blondes! 6mo

JaclynW I just finished this book! I'm going to need to watch this. (I did not care for the book though...) 6mo
OrangeMooseReads @JaclynW I liked the book. It‘s entirely fiction and I thought the idea was good to me everyone likes different things though. The movie looks like an after school special. It was interesting to see the book translated to the screen though plus it‘s only an hour and a half I think. (edited) 6mo
Blaire I just heard this book recommended on the call your girlfriend podcast. Some great points were made about what ppl said about it when it was originally published and ppl thought it was nonfiction and then learned it wasn‘t. 6mo
JaclynW @OrangeMooseReads @Blaire I felt betrayed. It claims to be based on a real teenage girl, but in fact, it was written by a Mormon therapist as propaganda. Maybe the author was well intentioned but it rubbed me the wrong way. The story was "okay" but looking back, lots of things seemed "off" or completely wrong/impossible. 6mo
OrangeMooseReads @JaclynW yeah i felt a bit that way too. I didn‘t realize it was a Mormon therapist that wrote it though. Yes I agree so many things were off and didn‘t add up and seemed completely impossible/improbable. 6mo
Blaire @OrangeMooseReads @JaclynW on the podcast they compared it to that million little pieces...but the interviewee said reading it as fiction and appreciating it while ignoring how it was marketed - was really the first book to capture valley girl speak and look at teen girls‘ lives. I say all this not having read it or heard of it before Friday. 😂 6mo
VioletBramble I read this when I was 12 (1974-75) a few years after it was published. It must seem so dated by now. Even at 12 I thought the beginning and end felt false. But then I was around a lot of drug using teens thanks to family members and neighbors. Alice rarely spoke like a teenager. When she was still keeping her diary on scraps of paper while living in the park I knew for sure she was fake. Was Valley Speak a thing then? 6mo

The Haunting of Hill House | Shirley Jackson

Started watching this yesterday. The changes work but it is NOTHING like the book. The only thing they share is the house. I like the show so far not scary at all (at least for me I read ‘It‘ at 11 and grew up on ‘Friday the 13th‘ movies).
If you have read the book and plan to watch the Netflix series you have to disconnect the two. #booktofilm

WhatWouldJaneDo Agreed, I loved this adaptation for the most part! There are some cool allusions to the source material that I had to geek out and explain to my husband whenever they came up. Are you watching for the hidden ghosts? 6mo
OrangeMooseReads @WhatWouldJaneDo yes I‘ve caught most of references to the book and I think I‘ve seen most of the hidden ghosts. 6mo

#MusicalNewYear #SisterSuffragette This is a reimagining of real life abolitionist and early supporter of women‘s right movement, Sarah Grimké her sister Angelina and a young slave girl Hetty who is gifted to Sarah on her 11th birthday. Well researched and beautifully written, a must read for any historical fiction fan.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️: Needed a western for BookRiot‘s Read Harder challenge and this fit the bill. Mattie Ross is my new favorite protagonist. This was so good!! #BooktoFilm
