Where'd You Go, Bernadette
Where'd You Go, Bernadette: A Novel | Maria Semple
Bernadette Fox is notorious. To her Microsoft-guru husband, she's a fearlessly opinionated partner; to fellow private-school mothers in Seattle, she's a disgrace; to design mavens, she's a revolutionary architect, and to 15-year-old Bee, she is a best friend and, simply, Mom.Then Bernadette disappears. It began when Bee aced her report card and claimed her promised reward: a family trip to Antarctica. But Bernadette's intensifying allergy to Seattle--and people in general--has made her so agoraphobic that a virtual assistant in India now runs her most basic errands. A trip to the end of the earth is problematic. To find her mother, Bee compiles email messages, official documents, secret correspondence--creating a compulsively readable and touching novel about misplaced genius and a mother and daughter's role in an absurd world.

This one was very back and forth, and the characters were off the wall. I loved the format, although I'm not sure how they made a movie based off of it. A great adventure that had me guessing what was going on and what would happen next.

Bernadette is unbelievably witty and funny. This book drips with satire. I found Bernadette relatable and humoursly faulted for so many misunderstandings. At one point, I wanted to throw her husband in front of moving traffic. Her daughter Bee, however, has her back through and through.

My only regret is not taking the plunge into this book sooner!

Happy New Year everyone. I‘m spending it listening to this book. I love it! What did you think?

marleed I loved it. My favorite line was that Chiluly‘s were the pigeons of Seattle. I waited for it to be delivered in the movie and it was not! Nor did the movie have the Beatle‘s soundtrack in the background! 3w
Cfmamareads @marleed wow I‘m surprised by that! I haven‘t watched the movie yet, but how disappointing. I loved the part about the hypnotist gathering everyone in Seattle and telling them they were going to love a craftsman house. Haha. 3w

I finally got around to listening to this audiobook in September & did I ever enjoy it! The narrator, Kathleen Wilhoite, was amazing. She breathed life into each character. I laughed until I cried, literally, & I've never done that before while listening to a book. There were parts of the book that I'm not even sure would have been quite so engaging had I been reading a physical copy. Really well done and well written. I highly recommend.

I honestly am not sure how I feel about this book. It started out strong, I loved Part 1s Bernadette, then I hated everyone, then some of the characters redeemed themselves. I liked the format - the narrative is primarily told through various correspondence, but this really isn‘t a genre that works for me very often. Book club should be interesting. 3 stars/pick with reservations

Just finished the end of Part II and I‘m officially dreading book club. The one member who hates “popular fiction” and has been balking at reading this has rabbits for pets and there‘s an awful scene involving a pet rabbit on the end of Part II. I sent her a warning in an email to skip those pages. I hope she heeds my warning. 😔

ferskner I just read this and I don't remember that at all! I'm so good at blocking things out. 2mo
Sace Oh no! I hope she heeds your warning! 😔 2mo
DGRachel @ferskner I probably wouldn‘t have given the scene much thought if it wasn‘t for my co-worker. She‘s really sensitive about rabbits and I know she‘s already got her hackles up about reading “fluff”, and honestly, my concern is hardly altruistic-I don‘t have the emotional bandwidth to deal with her reaction to the scene and I know she‘ll be at my desk, in my face, ranting, if she reads that scene. 2mo

rabbitprincess If it helps, *I* appreciate your warning about that scene and will probably skip the book on that basis... 😬 2mo
Megabooks You know, people make jokes about warnings, but my thought is, nobody is forcing you to read anything. Especially not recreational reading. If someone is kind enough to send me warnings and let me decide what I‘m in the mood for and can handle, I appreciate that. I read one specific warning about The Ninth House that put it in the no category. It‘s something that probably doesn‘t truly bother a lot of people, but I appreciated it. 2mo
Megabooks That was very thoughtful of you, Rachel! 💙📚 2mo

I loved this rich, madcap but bittersweet story about a genius architect who loses faith in her talents and becomes a sort of judgmental hermit. I know how school functions can push a parent to the edge! I also know how it feels to get so lost in the mundane that you forget life is special and so are we all. The characters are all memorable, even those only hinted at.

Chrissyreadit What a pretty picture! 3mo
IamIamIam @Chrissyreadit I think it's from the movie. Bernadette was an architect who created a home from an old bifocal factory! I love the imagery for this!! 3mo

Book #3 - Interesting format to tell a story. The ending actually got ruined for me from a TV show mentioning the ending. It reminded me of a family trip we went on that was an Alaskan cruise. Now, I can see the movie!

I was unsure about this book when I started, there‘s a lot of back and forth going on. I do think the character development was great but the beginning of the book was long and drawn out (in a good way) however, the ending seemed a little rushed. I kept waiting for Bernadette to leave and I felt cheated that it didn‘t happen until the end. I will recommend it to my book clubs though! Book 39 of 2019

This book was so charming. I loved basically all the characters, even the vapid and self-involved ones. I rooted for Bee through the whole book and loved seeing an intelligent and quirky mother raising her daughter to be intelligent and quirky. The theme of motherhood and selfishness was refreshing and honest. Bernadette was unapologetic in her personality and I couldn't have admired her character more for it. Highly recommend!

NEWT HP readathon-last book in Defense Against Dark Arts prompt-read title from tbr.I saw Bernadette behavior & disappearance as how she tried to manage conflicts in life.Brilliant woman but different as a professional, wife & mother. She struggled to "fit in" in a discriminated world, ending with depression. It was like seeing a play.It has some irrelevant parts with abrupt & too happy ending.Movie was so-so.Loved how therapy was criticized. 3.4⭐️

This was my first ever #bookhaul post. It was about 1.5 years ago, though I've been a litten for over 3 years. I'm terribly guilty of ignoring purchased books in favor of library books.
The stack on the right were the books for me. I've only read Where'd You Go Bernadette, and The Kite Runner, which I actually listened to.
I did read the Anne series with my oldest (3 books are in the middle stack) and listened to The Giver.

What a delightful witty book! Exactly what I was in the mood for. Bernadette is the most unconventional type of mother, surrounded by mothers who are judging her because she‘s not as active at the school of their kids as they are. So recognizable, it made me laugh out loud. A combination of events (all rather hilarious) lead to Bernadette‘s disappearance. Daughter Bee and her father set out to find her. Recommended!

This book is like character of Bernadette,a bit of a mess. Part of it was the way the story was told through a mix of faxes, emails, and narration by a teenager who at times seems to know things that should be impossible for her to know. Bernadette‘s husband is a truly loathsome character, which I won‘t get into because spoilers. And then there‘s Bernadette, who seems to spend a good portion of the book hating on people and the city of Seattle.

MySharonaK I think your comment is just the push I needed to bail. I‘m about 30% through and I really don‘t enjoy it, but people kept telling me to give it a chance and that I won‘t regret it. I think it‘s time to bail, thank you 💐 5mo

It's hard for me to rate this one. The style is clever and engaging, the overarching themes are fairly compelling, but... EVERY character is SUCH a tough hang. I also get really frustrated by books that pit the cool, artsy, unique moms against...all other moms, who are made out to be simple and petty and unable to lead their own lives (I'm looking at you, Big Little Lies). That's a turn off for me.so I don't think I can make this a Pick.

marleed I liked this but I get what your saying. I felt that way about Little Fires Everywhere. 6mo
