"The House of Forster is built on bubbles; watching each wealth-addled generation try not to blow the family fortune and/or disgrace its name provides not only excellent Gothic fun but a panoramic tour of the American Centuryand Snowden Wrights voice has all the Southern charm and lightly worn wisdom youd expect from a writer with a name like Snowden Wright."Jonathan Dee, author of the Pulitzer Prize finalist The Privileges The story of a family. The story of an empire. The story of a nation. Moving from Mississippi to Paris to New York and back again, an epic saga of family, ambition, passion, and tragedy that brings to life one unforgettable Southern dynastythe Forsters, founders of the worlds first major soft-drink companyagainst the backdrop of more than a century of American cultural history. The child of immigrants, Houghton Forster has always wanted morefrom his time as a young boy in Mississippi, working twelve-hour days at his fathers drugstore; to the moment he first laid eyes on his future wife, Annabelle Teague, a true Southern belle of aristocratic lineage; to his invention of the delicious fizzy drink that would transform him from tiller boy into the founder of an empire, the Panola Cola Company, and entice a youthful, enterprising nation entering a hopeful new age. Now the heads of a preeminent American family spoken about in the same breath as the Hearsts and the Rockefellers, Houghton and Annabelle raise their four children with the expectation theyll one day become world leaders. The burden of greatness falls early on eldest son Montgomery, a handsome and successful politician who has never recovered from the horrors and heartbreak of the Great War. His younger siblings Ramsey and Lance, known as the infernal twins, are rivals not only in wit and beauty, but in their utter carelessness with the lives and hearts of others. Their brother Harold, as gentle and caring as the twins can be cruel, is slowed by a mental disabilityand later generations seem equally plagued by misfortune, forcing Houghton to seriously consider: who should control the company after hes gone? An irresistible tour de force of original storytelling, American Pop blends fact and fiction, the mundane and the mythical, and utilizes techniques of historical reportage to capture how, in Nathaniel Hawthornes words, families are always rising and falling in America, and to explore the many ways in which nostalgia can manipulate cultural memoryand the stories we choose to tell about ourselves.

#PopSugar2020 #Pop2020 It‘s HERE!!!!!

BarbaraBB Oh wow, thanks! Just another evening of me and my spreadsheet ahead of me 😍 2w
Cinfhen Darn, I meant to tag you xx 2w
Cinfhen I already found some double dips and potentially triple dips!!!! 2w

Cinfhen I‘m not doing Read Harder! Are you?? I skipped it this year 2w
Cinfhen @BarbaraBB 👆🏽👆🏽👆🏽💋💋 2w
Emilymdxn Im so excited! Definitely going to do this methodically next year rather than kinda lackadaisically as I did this year - I want to plan my reading much more next year so this will definitely help me. I love all the prompts! 2w
Kangaj1 Fun! It's new book challenge season! How do I sign up for #Booked2020? 2w
Tex2Flo I didn't even LOOK at the popsugar challenge all year. It was everything I could do to read more non-fiction! Next year for sure!
2w
BarbaraBB I am doing the ones you do except for the non-fiction one. Instead I do Around the Year in 52 books. So a lot of challenges again. I don‘t know if I‘ll finish them all. But I love the planning! Has Readharder been published yet? 2w
Cinfhen I don‘t think so @BarbaraBB but I LOVE the planning too @Emilymdxn @Tex2Flo the BEST part is finding books that cover multiple prompts from various challenges!!! 2w
Cinfhen Glad you want to join #Booked2020 @Kangaj1 I‘ve tagged you in the original post 💜 2w
KarenUK Thank you so much for sharing!!!!😘💕 2w
KarenUK I‘m going to do #booked2020 and #Pop20 and maybe..... #readingEurope2020 but that might be too much for me... I‘m not the fastest reader! 😂 2w
Cinfhen I‘m most “challenged “ by #ReadingEurope @KarenUK there is no way I‘m going to read 46 books and half of those countries are VERY OBSCURE ~ I‘ll just have fun with it and see how far I get 2w
Cathythoughts Yes I agree , I‘m just hoping to dip into #ReadingEurope ... I know I won‘t finish that many books in a year... this posted challenge looks great too 😳🤔.. My main objective is complete #booked2020 @KarenUK 2w
Cathythoughts Who are the organizers of #pop2020 ? 2w
Cinfhen PopSugar is an online site that runs the reading challenge and there is a BIG pop sugar group on GoodReads that really bolsters the challenge. I‘ve participated since 2016 (I think) @Cathythoughts It‘s a good blend of “easy” and “challenging”🤓 2w
Cinfhen You were a dynamo with #Booked2019 @Cathythoughts !!!!! I bet you can up your challenge intake 😊😉😘 2w
Reviewsbylola I‘m sitting this one out but I love seeing the prompts! 2w
4thhouseontheleft I'm so excited! I really like the advanced prompts this year. 2w

I enjoyed this book about a Southern family that started Pan Cola (think Coke). This is a multi-generational tale that is interesting; however, it jumped around. A LOT. I would forget how characters were related, so I suggest reading it quickly before you forget the family tree.

Today‘s meeting of #The2030SomethingBookClub was a fantastic success 😁👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻! Two dozen members had a great back-&-forth about the weaknesses and merits they found in this multi-generational historical fiction tome! The best discussions seem to occur when the group is evenly split in their like and dislike for a selection 😆. Jolly good fun! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 #NYC

“The South...was similar enough to the real world to make a child think, I know this place, yet also different enough for them to go to sleep at night knowing it was only make-believe...Not only a world from a children‘s book but also...his own childhood, the strangeness, darkness, and altogether fucked-up-ness that made him the incredibly well-adjusted person he was today.”

I‘ve been bad about reviewing books lately. This one was read on a whim. My reading buddy @Cinfhen joined me early on and bailed just as quickly. 😆 I wish I could say she made a mistake . . . This wasn‘t a bad book—I love generational sagas and this one seemed promising. The main problem was that the author jumped around incessantly, sometimes going back and forth decades in the same chapter. It made it difficult to build a connection.

Cinfhen Sorry, Steph 😬I just couldn‘t connect...I think from the first few pages I was sensing the potential for disaster 🙄Glad u managed to make it through but I‘ll let this one go. 8mo

Reviewsbylola And wow, a Tuesday wedding?! Granted I have no room to speak. Mine was on a Thursday. But it was really just family and a destination wedding so I‘m justifying it. 🤣 8mo

#rumourhasit that Montgomery “Monty” Forster May be gay, despite his beautiful wife and daughter. Monty has lofty political aspirations that could be derailed by his sexuality, but he and his father, family patriarch and head of a cola company, will pay off whoever they have to in order to get Monty ahead.

I‘ve only read on chapter so I‘m curious to see where this goes. #anglophileapril

Cinfhen I own this one too!! Maybe I‘ll start it as my next read 8mo

Pickpick

This book is expansive. It follows four generations of a Mississippi family through the rise and fall of their soft drink empire during the twentieth century.
The relationships the family members build with others and each other are explored over the years. The author does character jumps without warning, but I was able to get used to it. The history and lore of the Forsters pulled me in and they didnt let go until the last page was finished.

Reviewsbylola I‘m excited for this one. Great review! 9mo

This was an interesting story, but one that was very hard for me to follow. There were many characters introduced all at once, so I was grateful for the family tree at the front of the book. The narrative switches from past to present and character to character so often that it is hard to keep up. There were many points of sarcasm that I really enjoyed, and this book is meant to be taken lightly. It‘s not for everyone but some will really like it.

I received this book for free, so I'd like to give it to someone else for free. I read 117 pages and bailed. I just didn't connect with any of the characters, and I kept getting angry at them. If you would like to give it a try, I'll happily send it to whoever comments first.
Edited: Book has been claimed.

Trying to get into this one. It's a bit chaotic. I don't mind that different chapters focus on different characters, but it jumps around in time within the chapters. I feel like I could benefit from a chart.
