From the #1 New York Times bestselling author of the popular Black Dagger Brotherhood series comes a brand-new novel about arson investigator, Ann Ashburn, who is consumed by her troubled past, her familys scorched legacy, and her current case: chasing a deadly killer. Anne Ashburn is a woman consumed... By her bitter family legacy, by her scorched career as a firefighter, by her obsession with department bad-boy Danny McGuire, and by a new case that pits her against a fiery killer. Strong-willed Anne was fearless and loved the thrill of fighting fires, pushing herself to be the best. But when one risky decision at a warehouse fire changes her life forever, Anne must reinvent not only her job, but her whole self. Shattered and demoralized, Anne finds her new career as an arson investigator a pale substitute for the adrenaline-fueled life she left behind. She doesn't believe she will ever feel that same all-consuming passion for her job again--until she encounters a string of suspicious fires setting her beloved city ablaze. Danny McGuire is a premiere fireman, best in the county, but in the midst of a personal meltdown. Danny is taking risks like never before and seems to have a death wish until he teams up with Anne to find the fire starter. But Danny may be more than a distraction, and as Anne narrows in on her target, the arsonist begins to target her. From the creator of the bestselling Black Dagger Brotherhood, get ready for a new band of brothers. And a firestorm.

Early morning reading and coffee. Not sure that I‘ll get this one finished for #20in4 today but I‘ll make an effort. I do hope to finish up my current audiobook today while doing all the extra house things an extra day off provides.

This book was so intense, from the horrible injury/fire scene in the beginning to the talk of suicide and murder, but it was also such a great book because of that intensity. I couldn‘t stop reading to see what happened next and who the arsonist was. And I loved seeing how Anne and Danny got through guilt, injury and danger to come together.

Addictive, captivating, passionate, emotional.

Consumed was a fun read full of romance, relationships, and emotions. The main character Anne was strong, vigilant, and passionate about a fellow coworker Danny. The story begins with action they're involved in an aggressive fire, and Danny rushes to save Anne. This action takes them on a road to self discovery before gradually taking the relationship into a whirlwind of passion.

Ward really can‘t do wrong in my books. This was certainly different but I liked how she changed her writing style, and this story was a little more real and edgier. I hope it‘s a new series; I want more of these characters.

Also, the ‘reveal‘ at the end?? Got me like 😳

I have OCD and anxiety. It is a chicken and egg situation... I relate to this passage. Repetition IS flimsy, but it is also necessary to get through every day. The illusion is practicality. It is coping. It is learning to keep going. But boy, it is flimsy.

I really wanted a good steamy romance and I have just gotten over my leg being snapped in half, so I thought this would hit me in all the right sobby places, but 3 chapters in I had to bail. Every couple pages it was Trump supporter this and millennials that and I was so annoyed that I just returned the book to the library. I'm really glad I didn't buy this book or I would have been angry and disappointed.

Confession: because the hub isn‘t good at gift giving (as in, I usually either don‘t get anything at all or he gets me crap he wants or the dreaded “practical” gift) I buy myself some gifts every year and put them under the tree. This is this year‘s selection. I may have gone a tad overboard. 🤣🤣

The first in a new series about a group of firefighters. I loved the story. It is about comraderie between friends and friendship that becomes more. Highly recommend.

More "sputtering embers" than "raging inferno for me. After a high-stakes beginning the rest felt slow and one-note despite a fair amount of action occurring, plus it takes another 100 pages for the MCs to even meet again. I much preferred the exploration of trauma through the platonic/familial relationships over the romance. I'd be interested in a book about Anne's brother or SWAT Team Jack, threads are set up for an overarching suspense plot.

I‘ve started and abandoned a lot of books lately so I had to go back to my forever favorite JR Ward. Anne is a former firefighter turned fire investigator who has a complicated history with her former teammate, Danny. Loved this book but I didn‘t enjoy the plot line about an arson investigation as much as the romance story line, character arcs, and side characters. Still a promising start to a steamy new series.

After 13% I was done. I was bored to tears. I feel like the endless chapters I read could have been covered in a prologue. I also don't care for the way she puts her words together. It doesn't sound natural. Lastly, Anne is annoying. The end.

There were a few gems, like the one above, in this book, but I found the pacing awkward and unbelievable, the characters flat and the sexytimes lacking. Not Ms. Ward‘s best effort, but okay for escapism nonsense. 👍🏼👍🏼1/2

Former firefighter turned Arson investigator, Anne, reunites with her former partner, Danny, who is on a spiral of self destruction. They have a lot to work through and don‘t sugarcoat their problems, but you‘re rooting for them the whole time. One criticism, Anne starts out with a slight “better than other girls cause I‘m not like other girls” attitude. #romantsy

Picked this up from the ARC shelf for employees at my job (Barnes & Noble)!! This, I must admit, is my first J.R. Ward book. I know of the author, just haven‘t actually read any of her books until now! Really exited about reading and reviewing this! It‘s been a while since I‘ve done one!

I enjoyed Consumed. The plot of Dannyboy & Anne was good & kept my interest in the explosive beginning. I enjoyed Anne‘s character as the female firefighter; tough, independent, and skilled.

The part that didn‘t work was the lingering mystery. The payoff wasn‘t satisfying, like an afterthought. There were loose ends & I wonder if its a series & if so, not sure I‘ll running back for more. Unless its Jack from SWAT, that could change my tune!

I was provided an ARC.
I really tried to love this book. The author is one of my favorites, but I just couldn't finish it. While I think the story has the foundation to be a great book that is not what I experienced. The story felt disjointed and cliched. Perhaps my expectations were simply too high because of the Blackdagger Brotherhood series. There are many 4-5 star reviews so others are fully enjoying it. Sadly, I am not one of them.

So I‘m about 45% done with this book and I‘m less than impressed and struggling to finish. The story line feels forced and lack luster. It took almost to this point to figure out the direction and how the three main characters will tie together (the book switches between the 3 of them which becomes a bit disjointed & jumbled feeling.) Going to set it aside and try again later.
