The Dreamers
The Dreamers | Karen Walker
A strange illness induces sleep and heightens dreams in an isolated college town, transforming the lives of ordinary people, in this mesmerizing novel by the New York Times bestselling author of The Age of Miracles. A college girl tells her friends that she's feeling strangely tired. The next morning, when they find her in bed, she is still breathing--but she won't wake up. Within a few days, another student, down the hallway, won't wake up. As the sleeping sickness spreads, the town is turned upside down. We meet Ben and Annie, a young couple determined to keep their newborn baby safe; Sara and Libby, whose survivalist father has long prepared for disaster; Mei and Matthew, and other college students. A quarantine is established, the national guard is summoned. Yet, those who have fallen asleep are showing unusual patterns of brain activity. More than has ever been recorded in any brain--asleep or awake. They are dreaming--but of what? With gorgeous prose and heart-stopping emotion, The Dreamers startles and provokes about the possibilities contained within a human life, when we are awake and, perhaps even more, when we are dreaming.

This one was a slow start for me but I was intrigued by the premis of the sleeping sickness so I kept reading. The writing is really good, with multiple POV. Which I liked. I did feel like this book fell into the trap of being overhyped though. That being said it is a quick interesting read.

I'm a sucker for apocalypse tales and plague tales, too, because life and death struggles illuminate character, and, in the wider view, what it means to be human. What if we all just went to sleep?

A sudden outbreak of unknown origin gives new meaning to the term “sleepy little college town” when people begin to fall into a deep, dream filled sleep that no one can wake them from. No cause, no symptoms, no explanation, just slumber. Some people dream of the past, some predict things that haven‘t happened yet, others see worlds of fantasy. As the weeks go by the line between nightmare & reality begins to blur even for those who are awake.

Book two is done! This one was way better. The story reminded me a bit of Blindness by Jose Saramago. I enjoy stories about a random weird thing happening that changes an area for awhile. #24b4Monday

vivastory This one sounds really interesting 4w
Geeklet @vivastory It was better than I thought it would be. The author writes characters very well. I have some nitpicks here and there but overall, it was a great way to spend an evening. It also reminded me that I‘m way overdue for a reread of Blindness. 4w

I've tried several times to read this book which I came to the conclusion is not for me.
This story starts off with a mysterious illness hitting first the college dorms and then out through the city. I felt like there were too many characters. The story was a little bland with not much going on except for this sleeping illness.

I almost skipped this book, but I‘m so glad I didn‘t. The plot is fascinating, but the sleeping sickness isn‘t the focus of the book. I think the author wanted focus more on relationships and the ways we interact with each other. Despite that murkiness (at least for me) the writing was stunning and a super enjoyable read. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ for me.

I picked this up because it was so often compared to Station Eleven. I wouldn‘t say that it is quite that good, but it was still an entertaining read. For a book about people falling asleep, it is surprisingly well paced and plotted. It's also elevated by the ambiguity that Walker leaves the reader with.

“An ordinary town transformed by a mysterious illness that triggers perpetual sleep.” This book is amazing, i was instantly transported to this town. I couldn‘t put it down over the weekend. It‘s not about the how or why of the virus so that maybe aggravating to some people. It‘s more about the characters and what they are going through as the town goes under. 📚 📖

stunning. If you're looking for specifics of how and why's about the virus itself, this book is wrong for you. As in her previous book, it's all about characters and Karen Walker is one of the few writers, who manages to create each character so well that they are all likeable and you care for each individually. I love her style and the story was very well told.

I was so excited about Walker‘s newest novel after loving The Age of Miracles. Unfortunately I really didn‘t care for this at all. The writing was nice, if a little distant.and I wanted to see what happened to the characters, but the plot felt way too familiar and unfinished. My overall impression was that this book has already been done before many times, and I still didn‘t know what was going on or really the whole point by the end.

I fell in deep with this gorgeously written speculative fiction about this mysterious sickness that afflicts a tiny town in California. The main symptom? People fall asleep.... for weeks. The whole thing feels like a dream.

Such a beautiful passage in #TheDreamers. Just a group of young women who want to be free in the world, who deserve to be free in the world, being held back by something out of their control and something they never asked for. And who is narrating this book? Radical reading: is it the virus? #karenwalkerthompson#virus#sleep#thirdperson

#AnglophileApril On a university campus in southern California, a college student falls asleep and cannot be woken. Over the following weeks, a “sleeping sickness” sweeps through the town, causing an epidemic that baffles medical experts and puts the community in quarantine. The victims are all experiencing a #dream(s) like state, where memory and time are blurred. Gorgeous writing, thought provoking premise. I really enjoyed this hypnotic read.

Sounds interesting. People begin to get infected with a strange new illness, a sleeping illness. Those that fall asleep can‘t be woken up. But, doctors soon find out that their brain activity is heightened and more aware than when awake. So, the question is, what is going on, what are they dreaming about?

This is not your typical sci fi sickness dystopian novel. This novel is a slow burn and the journey of a town through an unexplainable tragedy. You won‘t get too connected to any of the characters and there are many. You‘ll only be experiencing the sickness as others do. The ride is quite worth the effort you have to put in to hang on. There isn‘t much plot, but stick with it for the slow burn.

This is the way the world ends,
This is the way the world ends,
Not with a bang but a whimper.

Something about this book reminds me of T.S. Elliot. It's both melancholy and strong. Both impossible yet feels like it could be real. Beautifully written.

Set in an idyllic small town in the woods, things soon become scary as people simply don't wake up. Who will be next and what are they dreaming?

I really enjoyed this book. Santa Lora, a small college town, is hit by a mysterious sleeping sickness in which people fall victim to deep, unending sleep. Doctors can‘t figure out the cause or cure and soon the entire town is quarantined. The ending left me with a lot of big questions that I‘d wished she‘d answered to some extent, but overall, I appreciated how she let the story unfold and the existential questions she left burning in my mind.

Station Eleven, Severance, Bird Box, and so many others have recently tackled the idea of an epidemic that cripples society. Dreamers does the same thing, but on a smaller more intimate scale. A sleeping disease is spreading through a small town and as more victims succumb, the remaining survivors live in a state of fear. The writing is lyrical and fittingly dream-like. (Con‘t in comments)

Avidreader25 It was beautiful, but not at all what I was expecting. Though the fear of what's happening is real, it never has the same sense of urgency. The book intentionally meanders through the crisis, reporting what happens, but focusing more on the emotions of the people in the midst of the drama. 4mo

I loved this one. The writing was so, for lack of a better word, dreamy! (I suppose that was the point.) I enjoyed the concept, and agree with reviewers' comments that we didn't ever know more about the virus that was central to the plot. For some reason this didn't bother me. I really connected with each of the storylines. Highly recommended ✨

WhatWouldJaneDo I loved this one as well. I really like how Walker takes sciency situations that could be setups for sci-fi or dystopian stories and tells them from a quieter coming of age/slice of life place. 4mo

Written in luminous, hypnotic prose, The Dreamers is a beautiful, sweeping novel yet I was left feeling frustrated because nothing actually happens. That, coupled with the fact that there are several loose ends, left me thinking about this book long after I finished it. I'm rather perplexed to be honest, and not in a good thought-provoking way, but questioning what I just actually read.

This book was ok. The premise was interesting, & I liked the characters, but I thought, overall the tone & pacing felt too much like her other book, Age of Miracles. While the catalyst for the story is very different in the two books, everything else just felt very samey. So, I definitely think its an interesting, ok read; it‘s not one that I‘m like you‘ve got to go read this now. So if the idea behind the story interests you, give it a shot

Conservio How much of it is plot drive? Is it really about the plot or is more about examining humanity/ people/ certain emotions/etc? 5mo
Redjewel_7734 The plot isn‘t the drive which is why it can be so different from her other book in that and yet feel so same to the other one. I really liked the other book but I wasn‘t looking to reread it, so that‘s why this one so-so while the other was a pick. 5mo
