Mr. Flood's Last Resort
Mr. Flood's Last Resort: A Novel | Jess Kidd
FROM THE PUBLISHER OF A MAN CALLED OVE The award-winning author of Himself presents the spellbinding tale of a lonely caregiver and a cranky hoarder with a house full of secrets. Packed with charming eccentricities, greedy heirs, unresolved disappearances, and a whole lot of heart, Mr. Flood's Last Resort is a gripping mystery that examines the space between sin and sainthood, reminding us that the most important forgiveness we can offer is to ourselves. Maud Drennan is a dedicated caretaker, but her sunny, capable disposition and snappy quips mask a deep sadness. A tragic childhood event left her in the company of a cast of patron saints who pop in and out of her life like unwelcome tourists. She tries to find solace in her hard work in London...but then she meets the inimitable Mr. Flood. A menace by all accounts, Cathal Flood is a widower living alone in a Gothic Dorset mansion crawling with collectors items and feral cats. Stubborn as anything and an extreme hoarder, he has been battling his sons attempts to move him into an old age home, and rumor has it he sent his last caretaker to the madhouse. But Maud is this insolent old mans last chance: if she can help him get the house in order, he might be able to fend off the deportation. So the unlikely pair begin to cooperate, connecting over their shared love of folk tales and their suspicion of Gabriel, Cathals overbearing son. Still, shadows are growing in the cluttered corners of the mansion, hinting at buried family secrets, and reminding Maud that she doesnt really know this man at all. When she starts poking around, the forgotten case of a missing local schoolgirl comes to light, and a full-steam search for answers begins. Full of charming eccentricities, twisted comedy, a whole lot of heart, and Jess Kidds lyrical, lush, and hugely imaginative (Sunday Express Magazine) prose, Mr. Flood's Last Resort is a mesmerizing tale that will make you re-examine the space between sin and sainthood, reminding you that when all is said and done, the most important forgiveness that we can offer is to ourselves.

A quirky interesting book with supernatural elements and strong characters. I found this to be an interesting and fun read, although maybe not as strong as her other two books; Things in Jars and Himself. After all of the hype when this book came out, I was seriously underwhelmed. in fact, if I hadn't committed to reading this book for a challenge I may have bailed. I just couldn't get into it until near the end. I enjoyed the mystery aspect of this book and that may have been its saving grace but other than the mystery aspect, getting to the end was the best part for me. 🤔🤔🤔

I'm about a third of the way into this and I have to say, I'm really struggling to get into it. Is it just me? Was it slow starting for anyone else? Will it get better? I'm going to keep pushing through in the hope that it will. I'm moving on to another book for this evening though, I need a break lol

These book covers have really nice textures: those radiating lines on Sourdough are raised, and the wallpaper on Mr. Flood is more coarse than the other parts.

First completed read of #24in48. And this book... wow. It is magical realism and artistic brilliance packed into 340 pages. The cast is complete with an eccentric hoarder, a quirky and flawed caregiver who hangs out with teeth-picking saints no one else can see, and a classy gumshoe sidekick intent on solving a mystery, even if to her own peril. Oh, and some taxidermy. I. LOVE. THIS. BOOK.

A delightful read. A woman who sees saints and talks with them, many times funny and surprising dialogue. It presents stubborn and gruff Mr. Flood and Maud‘s care for him. Maud will not be scared away by his harsh words. In fact, she gives it right back. Great book with characters, such as Renata. I loved this book, and I highly recommend it.

I loved this book! It had such sparkling wit & humour, with a dash of pathos & hints of magic, I highly recommend it. Cathal is fiery old goat & Maud is his perfect counterpoint, I‘ve known crotchety old men just like him & Maud is that pious Irish girl that‘s a wee bit touched in the head & together they form the beating heart of this story. The end was heartbreaking & totally fitting. 5⭐️

#Riotgrams #day1 #CurrentRead I‘m 85pg into this strange but charming book & I‘m still not sure where the story‘s going. Maud Drennan is a care worker assigned to Cathal Flood, the terrifying old codger who has turned his large house into a monument to waste.Hoping to scare her into submission, the wily old man threatens & looms but Maud,an Irish psychic that is surrounded by ghostly saints is made of sterner stuff.Quietly funny & highly enjoyable.

This is an atmospheric, spooky, quirky read. In this case, quirky refers to a cantankerous old hoarder, a caregiver who sees saints everywhere, and a glamorous, neighborly transvestite investigator. Don't expect all hearts and hugs. This isn't that book. A mystery involving the death and disappearance of previous occupants of the house leads everyone into conflict. The writing is more literary fiction than mystery. I wasn‘t ready to say goodbye.

This is the British version titled The Hoarder. I really liked her first novel, Himself. This one did not hold together- interesting though. The main character is a care worker who sees Saints. She works in Mr. Flood‘s museum of a hoarder‘s home. Lots about him and the home and odd objects there then the “mystery” comes to a head in last 1/3 of book and an unsatisfying ending- Mr. Flood is peripheral to the story but is most of the story?2⭐️
