Quite Agatha Christie-esque. I enjoyed the varying perspectives, definitely kept things interesting. The remoteness of the setting and the brooding weather feels eery, almost like another character bringing a sense of foreboding to the story as it unfolds. Enjoyable read.

"Up until yesterday I knew who I was. Up until yesterday my life wasn't a lie"

This one hooked me in from the get go. Fast paced and super tense! There was just one part I thought was a little far fetched but it didn't take away from the story or the writing at all

JonathanDunne Hmm, alluring. 2y
RedLeaves @JonathanDunne Still enjoying that word I see 2y
JonathanDunne @RedLeaves 😁Ya, apologies, its just that I havent had a chance to use the word to it's full potential, and I felt that by doing it justice I should use it here. Words have feelings too :) 2y

Seems to be a theme to my reading choices at the moment. Strong female protagonists who refuse to conform to the expectations of society. Another which spans centuries and travels from Australia to Chile and Cornwall. Doesn't need too much analysis I'm sure. Enjoying so far

I have to admit I didn't enjoy as much as the first book in the series. Predictable in places and a little trite in others, but over all I did enjoy. Like the first, this book time hops back to the ancestors of main character, highlighting feminist issues of the time and retelling periods in history. The arts feature strongly, this one focusing on music.

Absolutely loving this! Recommended by one of my sisters as the protagonist is 'quirky' as I am often described as! It's equal parts laugh out loud funny and cosy...we all need that at the moment, right? Perfect time to enjoy the Lily O'Brien chocolates I received for my birthday last weekend 🥰🥰 hope everyone is doing well 🧡

Salley Vickers books feel more like an internal monologue or narrative on life, than a story with a linear plot. A tiny bit like Ali Smith in her intelligence, but not as abstract. Magnificent!

How I loved this!! I absolutely adore Heiki, the protagonist. She is so beautifully crafted and multifaceted. The story has the kind of slow, descriptive, enveloping narrative I love. Very evocative and emotive. Not the one to choose if you want a fast paced punchy thriller, but if you like creepy and haunting you'll love it ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Half way through this gem. Set mainly in post WW2 America. Heiki has a charmed life. Stay-at-home mother married to a prominent psychiatrist, a far cry from the damaged child she used to be. But she is shaken when her son befriends a girl at a nearby lake, who vanishes. Caught between controlling husband & intense Leo Dolan, a tv writer exploring the paranormal, Heiki is desperate to find out what happened to the girl. Then her son disappears...

I don't want this to end!!!
Edwardian Suffolk, a manor house stands alone in a corner of the fens: a glinting wilderness of water whose whispering reeds hold dark secrets. Maud is a lonely child growing up without her mother, ruled by her repressive father. When he finds a painted medieval devil in a graveyard, unhallowed forces are awakened. Maid's battle has begun. She must survive a world haunted by witchcraft....

Pickpick

Ooh I'm somewhere between a 'pick' and a 'so-so' with this one. I guessed the killer and their motives quickly. I was really frustrated with Kate's reliance on seemingly anyone male at times! I thought parts were a tiny bit far fetched and the ending was a little neat for me. Having said all that I didn't consider dumping it, I did enjoy it. It's an easy read and it is definitely very gripping towards the end! So I'm going to say pick.

Ooooof you guys on here are super readers!! Looking at some of your goals for the good reads challenge makes my little bookworm reputation look rather inept! My goal last year was 30 but I read 34. So gone for a target of 31 this year. Anyone else down in the two figure challenges with me? 🤪

britt_brooke 31 is an admiral goal! I 100% #blamelitsy for the insane increase in my reading the last 4 years. It‘s an addiction. 😆 (edited) 3y
sprainedbrain I agree with @britt_brooke 😊 I used to read 30-60 per year, then discovered audiobooks and went in to the 100s, then discovered Litsy and things went crazy. 😂 3y
britt_brooke @sprainedbrain Yep!! That‘s exactly what happened to me. 😆😆 3y

RedLeaves @britt_brooke @sprainedbrain Haha well I guess we should watch this space then! Never know what my target might be next year! 🤪 3y
Bklover I am! Last year I started with a goal of 100 books, which I very quickly dropped to 75. Of course I didn‘t make it to 75-I did around 50. So this year my goal is 50- that way I won‘t disappoint myself! 3y

Relishing this absolute gem!! Highly recommended if you love Bowie ? or have an interest in cultural history or bibliophilia. Documents Bowie's restless intelligence, and his pleasure in the fact that books allow readers to slip into someone else's skin and try it on for size

Jumping into another Peter James thriller. A handsome motivational speaker discovers his identity is being used to scam women who are looking for love online. The first he knew of it was a phone call from one of them, out of the blue, saying "you don't know me, but I thought I knew you".
