Howl's Moving Castle
Howl's Moving Castle | Diana Jones
Sophie has the great misfortune of being the eldest of three daughters, destined to fail miserably should she ever leave home to seek her fate. But when she unwittingly attracts the ire of the Witch of the Waste, Sophie finds herself under a horrid spell that transforms her into an old lady. Her only chance at breaking it lies in the ever-moving castle in the hills: the Wizard Howl's castle. To untangle the enchantment, Sophie must handle the heartless Howl, strike a bargain with a fire demon, and meet the Witch of the Waste head-on. Along the way, she discovers that there's far more to Howl--and herself--than first meets the eye.

Always fun, and an interesting use of John Donne's Song (which I confess I remember not actually liking).

Love how cross Sophie is about having fallen in love with Howl.

Huh! Remember my post earlier with the pic of Leigh Halfpenny? That was kind of apt, because it turns out that in the book Howl *did* play rugby, and played on the wing -- a position that Halfpenny does play (or used to, at least; I've only ever seen him play at full-back in the last few years). I'd forgotten this detail! That does make me happy.

Clare-Dragonfly I thought I remembered that Howl did play rugby! But I wasn‘t sure whether I was making assumptions based on not being in the UK myself. If I‘m not remembering details it must be time for another reread 😁 3mo
shanaqui @Clare-Dragonfly I'd thought I remembered it and then discounted it because Howl's so vain (and rugby's... a very physical game, even rugby union, which is what Howl surely played as a Welsh boy), but I was right the first time! 3mo
Clare-Dragonfly Maybe he learned magic so he could pretty himself up again after a match! 3mo

Another reread, because my brain's been needing the cosy familiar. I love that Howl's Welsh, and that we get a hint of how very accented his voice must be (“there's a welcome in the valleys!“, ack, I know exactly how he'd say it, lilting up and down). And his Welsh Rugby jersey! Wonder which region he'd support... He's probably too pretty to play rugby, but we do have chaps like Leigh Halfpenny (pictured), Dan Biggar, etc...

Inspired to read by my favorite movie, this book is one of the few that I can say makes a movie even better after reading. Having just as many similarities as differences, the story itself explains more of the movie as you read, while only making you love your favorite characters more. I still prefer the movie, but this was a nice little read.

The book is REALLY close to the Ghibli movie, BUT I think that this is one of the cases where I the movie is better than the book!
The story feels a little bit "old", and some passages are not really clear (like the ending!), but it also goes deeper on some other aspects that the movie does not mention…
I would say that the books and movie complement each other!

Life has been rather crazy lately and reading has been slow. Started Henrietta Lacks, haven't finished it. Started Lillian Boxfish, finding it quite boring for some reason. But then I picked up Howl's Moving Castle, which I got at the farmers market a few weeks ago. I never read it before. So far, I'm really enjoying it and it's actually making me want to read, not social media or TV or anything else in my down time.

A total delight! I had been curious about this book since seeing the Miyazaki adaptation (a favorite). It did not disappoint! Quite different from the movie, which makes some significant changes that give the story a darker tone. The book is much more whimsical, funny, and just all-around charming. A story I will revisit. 5⭐

I listened to the audio, expertly narrated by Jenny Sterlin. Pic above is the folio society edition, which I covet.

“I think we ought to live happily ever after,” and she thought he meant it. Sophie knew that living happily ever after with Howl would be a good deal more hair raising than any storybook made it sound, although she was determined to try. “It should be hair raising,” added Howl.
“And you‘ll exploit me,” said Sophie.
“And you‘ll cut up all my suits to teach me.”

*Novel Watching Crew January 2021 Pick*

I don‘t know why, but this was not clicking with me. Maybe because I have outgrown middle grade, but it was a combination of several elements. After reading, I watched the movie which I seemed to enjoy more. I felt like the story made more sense that way and it was easier to follow.

I can‘t get a good photo because of the reflections in the glass (so this is off the Etsy listing) but I‘ve finally got some new art on my wall! I love this Klimt x DWJ mash up!

julesG Since you've certainly read the book, and I haven't YET, do you think my 11 y/o daughter might enjoy it? I've wanted to read the book for ages, BTW. 1y
thegirlwiththelibrarybag @julesG, it‘s a whimsical and strange book that reveals a little bit more to me each time I revisit it - I love it so much but the (adult) friends I‘ve recommended it to didn‘t vibe with it... so maybe? Depends on the reader - and how taken with DWJ writing style they/you are. 1y
SayersLover If you‘re daughter likes fantasy and is not disturbed by the idea of demons then I highly recommend it! I read it for the first time when I was about 12 and loved it. Kids usually like the story and humor. 1y
See All 9 Comments
thegirlwiththelibrarybag @julesG - Calcifer - isn‘t a scary or maleficent fire demon - he‘s a bit grumpy and occasionally not particularly helpful (I‘m not sure if I‘m moving this book up or down your tbr) 1y
julesG 😁😁 Don't worry. I've seen the anime film. I know what I'm in for. I'll just read it and might have to reread with my daughter. 1y
julesG @SayersLover thanks. She likes fantasy a lot and demons don't put her off. She's often cheering for the demonic underdogs in stories. As I just wrote, I'll read it and then probably reread it with her. 1y
thegirlwiththelibrarybag @julesG, it doesn‘t have all that much in common with the film tbh. I nearly cried when I read (on Litsy) that the film was better (like it‘s fine to prefer the film but just straight up saying it‘s better, no ❤️) 1y
julesG Ugh! 1y
thegirlwiththelibrarybag @julesG, I remember liking the film when I saw it in the cinema but I reread the book last year and decided to rewatch the film after and was struck by how different the two are. The war plot line doesn‘t exist in the book at all. (edited) 1y

Another reminder that love is so powerful and comes in so many ways. A heartless love is still love indeed. In a Magical, fantasy story, where anything is possible, beauty can easily be disguised. While this was a fantasy book: a genre, I haven‘t had the chance to read often, it was so romantic in the least expected way and I thoroughly enjoyed it!

I enjoy fantasy.. but I feel it can go wrong so easily. Like I need to have great world building and understanding to enjoy a fantasy :)

It really depends.

I don't know. Thats hard to say. I assume if I was living in the fantasy I will know what the world is like and it wouldn't be as confusing? I know that is not an answer.
