Only upon posting this review have I realized that I‘ve listened to the abridged version 🤷🏼‍♀️🤦🏼‍♀️ In any case, I went to the audiobook on recommendation by Leigh Bardugo on the Barnes and noble YA podcast, and it was brilliant. Maybe I‘ll buy or rent the book and read it to find the differences. The narration was fabulous. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️💫

Vastly different from the movie, the original story takes a deep dive into the makings of each character and their unique personalities, struggles, and defining characteristics. It was lovely to see the reasoning behind Sophie‘s brash nature, the reality of Howl‘s aloofness, the truth behind Calcifer‘s sharp, biting words. It was a lovely mix of the familiar and unfamiliar, a story I knew from childhood reintroduced in a wonderfully new way!

I loved this book!!! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️!
It read like a middle grade book but is a YA one. I loved it. The wit and Sophie‘s growth. Howl and his apprentice and yeah I loved it.
It kinda felt like a light version of Uprooted... heavy on the ish though.

Have any of y‘all read Howl‘s Moving Castle? I picked it up entirely because I saw a lot of reviews of Sorcery of Thorns that compared the two. So far it‘s cute! 📖🦊🍻

Centique I read this as a kid and remembered loving it. Must do a reread! 3mo
Carlie892 @Centique I just finished it! It definitely had a younger vibe than I expected but it was very cute 😊 3mo

Time is always a big factor in kids and teen books. Publishers want to keep kids interested in continuing a series but also attract newer younger readers to already existing works that are not yet complete.

The original moving castle was around when I was a child, but new books in the series were coming out in the 2000s

Every bit as whimsical as the The Studio Ghibli film. It differs enough that I wasn‘t bored with reading scene by scene similarities. The movie will always have a special place in my heart but the book was surprisingly good for me.

Loving it so far. I was motivated to read this when I found out the Ghibli film was based on a book of the same name. It‘s... a little different then the movie. Still very good and I like not necessarily knowing what‘s going to happen next.

Bedtime read to the kids. They laughed, got scared, were sad, and they loved it. Little one wants to dive into the sequel right away. Eldest would like to read another short book the read the sequel.

Great SF/ F read. The book was made into a motion picture although, they both differ greatly they are each excellent in their own ways. I would recommend this for IR. UDL, Provide multiple means of representation, provide options for comprehension. EL, teach questioning for clarification. techniques#LAE3414sp19 https://blogs.edweek.org/teachers/work_in_progress/2014/08/teaching_questioning_...

DrSpalding You need a bit more of a summary. What drives you to believe this would be considered science fiction? Check your FlipBook as a resource. 8mo
Carinna.Chin The main reason I would say science fiction is because Howl basically jumps from one dimension or time period to the net using a door. I was initially leaning more towards fantasy. 8mo

We are all enjoying the book. It‘s fun to see the kids try to figure out if Howl is a good or bad person but they both agree he is rather silly, flooding his house with green ooze over a slight change in hair color. And they thought Sophie‘s reaction to a car ride hilarious.

Howl's Moving Castle | Diana Jones

New bedtime read for the kids. The tone differs from the movie and explains many small questions I had about Sophie. I like it so far but realize the kids may not have read enough fairy tales to recognize all the riffs. At lights out, they demanded I read more so I'm going to take it that they are interested in the story rather than trying to get out of bedtime....

I saw the animated movie by the same name and knew I had to read the book. Diana Wynne Jones' story is the ideal fairytale, with wizards, witches, fanastic castles, and lost princes. We follow a girl named Sofie who leaves a life of safety to find a way to lift a curse that was put upon her. She meets strange characters and goes on a magical adventure. She learns that life can be worthwhile if only you are brave enough to take that first step.

To borrow from Mary Poppins—practically perfect in every way. A brilliant, wonderful book. It‘s imaginative, whimsical, charming, & just plain delightful—& not just in the little ways that fill the pages with wonder & magic, intriguing & mischievous characters, & a house to dream about, but also in all the big ways that remind readers of the power & magic of a really well told story. A fantastic book for readers of all ages. Highly recommended.

Sunday afternoon adulting right here...First up, a trip to visit Unabridged Bookstore to get the tagged book (I was watching the movie with my son, realized I hadn‘t ever read the book and decided I should remedy that) & to visit the sale shelves. What a pleasant surprise - I think I picked up this book when it was published in the ‘80s but my younger self didn‘t appreciate it. My older lady self loved the classic storytelling and the fantastic, fully fleshed-out characters. I‘m putting the DVD on reserve at the library and I‘ll eventually read the other Howl books.
(I believe I once read that Neil Gaiman cites Diana Wynne Jones as an influence. Howl reminded me quite a bit of Stardust.)

thegirlwiththelibrarybag Pretty sure Neil has written introductions for some of her books ☺️ he‘s definitely a fan 8mo

After watching the Ghibli version of this book I was excited to learn of the book. The book doesn‘t disappoint! It was full of adventure and plot twists. There was so many different threads that worked together to produce one of my absolute favorite books! As a girl, Sophie would have shriveled with embarrassment at the way she was behaving. As an old woman, she did not mind what she did or said. She found that a great relief.
