The Hearts of Men: A Novel | Nickolas Butler
post image
Mehso-so

The downside of writing a debut novel as good as Shotgun Lovesongs is that everything after can‘t quite compare. This is my 3rd Butler read and while the writing was still good, the storyline just didn‘t pull me in. There was also something about the flow of the book that wasn‘t quite right. But still….I will continue to seek out books by Nickolas Butler.

peaKnit I saw him last week. He is so vulnerable and likable. He is working on Shotgun Lovesongs 2! His debut is my favorite by him for sure. 1d
Christine @peaKnit A sequel?? ‼️ Thanks for sharing! 1d
Coleen @peaKnit I always think of you when I read one of his because I remember him being local to you. 😉 And really?? A sequel??? 🙌 1d

Paul Has a Summer Job | Michel Rabagliati

Pickpick

In this graphic novel, we follow Paul in his first experience as a counselor at a summer camp in the 1970s.
I haven't read the first book in the series, but it's really not a problem. This book is readable by itself.
Well done, with interesting themes: coming of age, first responsibilities, first love, self-confidence, etc.

It's been so hot today! All I want to do is sit in front of a fan and read. So it seemed fitting to start a summer camp book.

#DynamicDs

Since I missed yesterday‘s prompt, I‘m going for double Ds today! (Okay, that sounded better in my head!) 😆 Out Of My Brain is about a #DifferentlyAbled girl & told through #Diary entries. The follow-up (tagged) is still in my TBR.

11-28 Mar 25 (audiobook)
A short but engaging story about Stanley, a boy who is arrested for stealing sneakers that had been donated to raise money for a homeless shelter, and sentenced to a youth detention centre where the boys are sent out every day to dig holes in a scorching hot desert. Very much in the tradition of tall tales and adventure stories, the characters are engaging and all comes to a satisfying ending. A good listen.

I found a new book podcast! Genna interviews people about formative books from their past.

This was a delightful discussion, and I can‘t wait to see what books come up next. #BookPodcasts

This was a pretty cool little book. A teen accused of a crime he didn't commit is sent to a correctional facility where the kids dig a hole each day. Lots of well-crafted, subtle foreshadowing that comes together nicely as the truth of the area and Stanley's family are slowly revealed.
