Soulless
Soulless | Gail Carriger
Alexia Tarabotti is laboring under a great many social tribulations. First, she has no soul. Second, she's a spinster whose father is both Italian and dead. Third, she was rudely attacked by a vampire, breaking all standards of social etiquette. Where to go from there? From bad to worse apparently, for Alexia accidentally kills the vampire -- and then the appalling Lord Maccon (loud, messy, gorgeous, and werewolf) is sent by Queen Victoria to investigate. With unexpected vampires appearing and expected vampires disappearing, everyone seems to believe Alexia responsible. Can she figure out what is actually happening to London's high society? Will her soulless ability to negate supernatural powers prove useful or just plain embarrassing? Finally, who is the real enemy, and do they have treacle tart?SOULLESS is the first book of the Parasol Protectorate series: a comedy of manners set in Victorian London, full of werewolves, vampires, dirigibles, and tea-drinking. I came for the alternate Victorian era/Steampunk-inflected alternate history with a spunky protagonist, vampires, and werewolves, but stayed for the spicy but not too spicy sexual tension between soulless spinster Alexia and werewolf alpha/chief investigator Lord Macon, quirky side characters, and mysterious society that‘s kidnapping vampires! This was a lot of fun, and I‘ll definitely continue with this series at some point.

Riveted_Reader_Melissa I loved this series, so much good fun. 8mo

I‘ll play!
1. Alexia Tarrabotti from Soulless- she‘s practical, funny, and a force to be reckoned with. I found her when I was in my mid 20‘s and she was what I needed.
2. Sarah Bishop from the All Saints trilogy- I love those books, and Diana‘s Aunt Sarah feels more like a real woman than the two protagonists.
3. Sophie from Howl‘s Moving Castle- she‘s so real and so feisty! #wondrouswednesday

Written in the type of over the top English that US authors tend to use when writing about English high society especially when writing about the Regency/ Victorian periods but still amusing on it‘s own merits. Still on Ch 1
(ETA: Ch 3. I‘m starting to feel it may be intentional)
Not sure when Canterbury became a port city but, hey, if HM QV can have a shadow parliament filled with vampires, werewolves and ghosts instead of Opposition, why not?

humouress 'Alexia raised both eyebrows and sipped her tea in uncharacteristic silence. She winced at the flavour, looked with narrowed eyes at her cup, and then reached for the creamer.'
An anachronism; they wouldn't have had powdered milk substitute in those (Regency? Victorian?) days.
1y
humouress Still trying to work out what BUR stands for; some kind of organisation for supernatural beings, it looks like. 1y
humouress I've decided the best approach is to suspend disbelief and jus enjoy the story. Which I was doing, anyway. 1y
humouress Entirely too much face slapping (starting with the first instance) 1y

Alexia Tarabotti is attacked by a vampire who seems to be unaware of her status as immune to attack since her touch makes supernatural creatures human again until the touch is broken. Alexia and the werewolf Lord Maccon investigate why the vampire is so ignorant and why vampires and werewolves are going missing in London.

Great world-building and story-telling that sucks the reader in, curious to know more about this world and the characters.

I missed yesterday‘s #LittensDressedInBlood prompt so making it up today. I tried to think outside the obvious werewolf related books, but the tagged one wouldn‘t let me go once I associated it with the song. 😅 I don‘t normally like the heroines in paranormal romances, but I ADORE Alexia, the parasol wielding, magic-canceling, ladylike badass. Image is from the manga which I haven‘t read yet but definitely want to.

DGRachel Ooh, I think I have this manga. I need to go check. Maybe that will break through this anti-reading funk! 3y

A cute and steamy paranormal romance that didn‘t have me rolling my eyes at the MC! Alexia is a strong yet flawed character that I could actually relate to. I started and finished in a matter of days and am eager to hunt down the rest of the series since more than one person has mentioned they get even spicier. 🤭😜 I loved the steampunk aspects of the world-building. Laughed out loud often. Sad I have to return this copy to a friend. 😅

Book 13 of the year

A sum of the bit of my life played out in the books I was reading at the time:

Prologue: Aug 2019, husband receives life changing job offer from the VA, changes in both income and physical location will comence sometime in Nov.

Nov 2019-Feb 2020, a whole lot of the gov't acting with every bit of the good communication and timeliness it's known for. (that is none. At all.)

I found this book and it had me hooked instantly.
