The Wisteria Society of Lady Scoundrels
The Wisteria Society of Lady Scoundrels | India Holton
A prim and proper lady thief must save her aunt from a crazed pirate and his dangerously charming henchman in this fantastical historical romance. Cecilia Bassingwaite is the ideal Victorian lady. She's also a thief. Like the other members of the Wisteria Society crime sorority, she flies around England drinking tea, blackmailing friends, and acquiring treasure by interesting means. Sure, she has a dark and traumatic past and an overbearing aunt, but all things considered, it's a pleasant existence. Until the men show up. Ned Lightbourne is a sometimes assassin who is smitten with Cecilia from the moment they meet. Unfortunately, that happens to be while he's under direct orders to kill her. His employer, Captain Morvath, who possesses a gothic abbey bristling with cannons and an unbridled hate for the world, intends to rid England of all its presumptuous women, starting with the Wisteria Society. Ned has plans of his own. But both men have made one grave mistake: Never underestimate a woman. When Morvath imperils the Wisteria Society, Cecilia is forced to team up with her handsome would-be assassin to save the women who raised her--hopefully proving, once and for all, that she's as much of a scoundrel as the rest of them.

Lady Darlington is one quotable b*tch, see below:
“If society wanted me to keep track of my illicit lovers, they should have educated me better.”
“Run away with the boy. Abandon your duties. Live in sin. Or else your bad name will be utterly redeemed.”
This book is an easy 10/10, I couldn‘t do this book description justice if I tried, it‘s so funny and cute and original, just read it

Looking back at August 2021. #12booksof2021 It was so hard to choose a favorite because I read some excellent books. Obviously, Empire of Pain was amazing, but for fun, I loved the tagged. It was unexpected, & I can‘t wait for a sequel. Also, I loved The Guncle. @Andrew65

Finally catching up on a couple months of reviews… 😬 This was hilarious and tons of fun—nothing serious, just a madcap romp with lady pirates, flying houses, several outlandish assassination plots, tons of witty literary references, and a love story to boot. The audiobook was delightful; just the escape I needed for my commute!

DGRachel It sounds fun! 1mo

“One can be happy in eternal solitude. A book, a cup of tea, and no company: that was Cecilia‘s idea of heaven. Having spent the past week surrounded by people and thwarted at every turn in her efforts to locate a library, she was now feeling as if she had endured an upper circle of Hell.”

This book was bonkers! And silly and rather charming and entertaining.

It's hard to describe. Victorian lady pirates whose vessels are flying houses get kidnapped by a male scoundrel who believes Bramwell Bronte was a genius and that uppity women should be back in the kitchen. Meanwhile our protagonist falls for a rakish male pirate (who is sadly without a flying house) as they go off to rescue the kidnapped members of the Wisteria Society.

I have loved this book. The chapter titles are very accurate chaos throughout. It's a lot of fun.

Thank you for all the birthday goodies, Chrissy! You are so thoughtful and generous! Self care, fall decor, bookish fun, and a terrific cutting board! (I already have it in the kitchen, so I forgot it for the photo!) The pumpkin is so unique and striking! Thank you so much for choosing and wrapping and shipping all these gifts - it was a fabulous birthday explosion!

An author-recommendation quote on the front cover of this one says "Delightfully bonkers" & that's honestly a great assessment haha This one is a zany ride but I thoroughly enjoyed it. Definitely a book that needs to be read in the spirit it was written, and it was a bit over-long, but on the whole a very entertaining read.

This was my #LMPBC read for this month!! @Laughterhp @Allylu @Bianca

TheAromaofBooks Finishing this last night put me at 286/800pgs for #AnyWayYouReadathon (we'll see how far I can get today haha) @kimmypete1 @Eggbeater @MidnightBookGirl & 125/2400pgs for #SuperSeptember @Andrew65 @EadieB 4mo

A total romp! This story is full of flying houses, explosions, robbery, assassins, lady pirates, and romance. Holton doesn‘t take anything too seriously and the highly stylized writing takes some getting used to, but it‘s worth it. Very silly, very fun.

Really enjoying the tagged book which is my #LMPBC read for this month. It's absolutely ridiculous, but in a fun way haha

I finished this just in time for romance book club a few days ago, and I thoroughly enjoyed it! Those of us that listened to the audiobook seemed to enjoy it a bit more than the physical book readers, so I recommend listening to it. It's definitely a more fun and lighthearted #LittensDressedInBlood kind of read!

Finished this late last night & loved it! I didn‘t realize it had fantasy elements until I started it, but loved the flying houses. Set in Victorian England w/ romance, action, a villain who is obsessed with the Brontes, strong women, & Queen Victoria talking to dead Prince Albert‘s portrait.
“Yes,” he agreed. “I‘m thinking of starting a Society Of Gentleman Scoundrels.”
“You‘re millennia too late. It already exists and is called the patriarchy.”

A delightfully fun novel with lady pirates, flying houses and plenty of banter. I loved it! I wish I could live in this world and fly my house around the country as I raid libraries and exchange witty banter with swashbuckling men. I especially loved how the author took typical gender roles/conceptions and turned them on their heads. ❤️

Graphic is from the author‘s Facebook page.
This was my August #doublespin historical fiction choice.

Gather your wits and get ready to swoon for this fantastical historical romance full of flying houses, dastardly deeds, literary quips, and pirates as polite as they are deadly! There's no more worthy successor to The Princess Bride--Swoon-worthy romance? Check! Fun with puns? Check! Madcap adventures? Check! Unlikely heroes? Check! Hilarity ensues? Check! Danger, betrayal, epic fight scenes? You can bet that dagger hidden under your bodice on it!

BookDadGirlDad I thought about picking this up at one time, but my testosterone wouldn't let me. I believe your review has successfully squashed my hormones. I'll be looking out for this one. 6mo

I might be being harsh, this may be more of a so-so. I loved the premise, the characters are fine, sometimes even fun. I hated the writing.
I was hoping for something more Gail Carriger like, and in theory it is but in execution far off.
? The father is obsessed with the Bronte's did I miss why he named his house Northangerland? It was so distracting, each time it came up I thought spiralled about does the author think NA is a Bronte book?

Cecilia was an irresistible character, I loved her. The way she delivered her verbal punches was just too funny & I liked her more for it. She‘s a respectable young lady pirate & she fully owns that. Although, it‘s clear that she is desperate to prove herself to her Aunt & the Society that she longs to be a full member of. This story is about Cecilia facing her past, her present, & grabbing with both hands the future that she wants for herself.

I started this ARC today. It's actually quite bonkers (in a good way) so far. The main female character belongs to a family of pirates, but instead of sailing on ships, pirates fly around in their houses. The main male character is an assassin or at least he is when he is introduced at the beginning of the book. I think this is going to be a fun read.
