The English Wife
The English Wife: A Novel | Lauren Willig
"Brings to life old world New York City and London with all the splendor of two of my favorite novels, The Age of Innocence and The Crimson Petal and the White. Mystery, murder, mistaken identity, romance--Lauren Willig weaves each strand into a page-turning tapestry." -Sally Koslow, author of The Widow Waltz "Her best yet...A dark and scintillating tale of betrayal, secrets and a marriage gone wrong that will have readers on the edge of their seats until the final breathtaking twist." -Pam Jenoff, New York Times bestselling author of The Orphan's Tale From New York Times bestselling author, Lauren Willig, comes this scandalous novel set in the Gilded Age, full of family secrets, affairs, and murder. Annabelle and Bayard Van Duyvil live a charmed life in New York: hes the scion of an old Knickerbocker family, she grew up in a Tudor house in England, they had a fairytale romance in London, they have three-year-old twins on whom they dote, and hes recreated her family home on the banks of the Hudson and named it Illyria. Yes, there are rumors that shes having an affair with the architect, but rumors are rumors and people will gossip. But then Bayard is found dead with a knife in his chest on the night of their Twelfth Night Ball, Annabelle goes missing, presumed drowned, and the papers go mad. Bays sister, Janie, forms an unlikely alliance with a reporter to try to uncover the truth, convinced that Bay would never have killed his wife, that it must be a third party, but the more she learns about her brother and his wife, the more everything she thought she knew about them starts to unravel. Who were her brother and his wife, really? And why did her brother die with the name George on his lips?

The author intertwines Shakespeare‘s play The Twelfth Night into this novel... Mystery, Murder, the wicked mother in law!! Lol it has it all! We read this for #BotmBuddyRead and had great discussions, yet it isn‘t one of my favorites!

The #leaves are just now turning in my area, though the tree in my front yard is still pretty green! I love the vibrancy of Fall‘s leaves and pulled this book from my shelves, not because of the content, but because the burnt orange and dark red colors of the cover evoke such autumn-like colors for me. I liked the book too, though it‘s not my favorite of Willig‘s books. #FallIsBooked

I had trouble putting this book down, and I even dreamt about the characters last night, so I have to give it a pick, but I found this story to be a real downer.😩 At least I finished my book for the week for #BookFitnessChallenge #BFC. And I got in a decent amount of time walking today.👍

I really enjoyed the mystery, but was not a fan of the romance aspect of this book. The plot kept me turning the pages, yes, even late into the night. Any book that can do that gets a thumbs up from me.👍

This book was pretty good! It was a little hard to follow the characters at first but then understood the further I read. There was murder and scandals and I not see the couple of twist that happened in the book.

A great atmospheric novel by an excellent writer. It is the story of Annabelle and Bay, but I found Jane‘s evolution to be more intriguing. It was very interesting to see Jane move from the quiet mouse, always obeying her mother, to the semi-confidant (she‘s got a bit to go) woman that she was at the end of the novel. Another hit by Willig. #Tewread

Read for #BOTMbuddyread. I know some in the group weren't overly fond of this one, but I really enjoyed it! I think it was bc I read it just after reading Twelfth Night. So all of those parallels worked well for me. I also really enjoyed the time period and the atmosphere. The mystery worked well for me, too. I will definitely try to read more by Lauren Willig.

AmyG Oh wow...good timing! I didn‘t get the Twelfth Night references but I, too, really enjoyed the book. I love a book with lots of juicy secrets! 10mo

#BOTMBUDDYREAD FINAL THOUGHTS : Did you enjoy this book??? Anything else you would like to discuss?

AmyG It was a slow start but I did enjoy it. I found it to be a good historical mystery. 10mo
daena I enjoyed it too. Easy to read among other books. You could easily put it down and pick it back up again. There were times where i wanted to keep reading, in my eyes that‘s a keeper! 10mo
Mitch Not for me this one.....I need a few characters I can get my teeth into. It was a little one dimensional and unbelievable for me. I did like the historical setting though and it gave a good sense of the time period. 10mo
See All 15 Comments
TheBookHippie @Mitch I agree. However the Dutch culture is so much like this still I got a ton of laughs 🤦🏽‍♀️ 10mo
BookwormAHN Loved it. 10mo
catebutler I had mixed emotions about this one. I did like the root of the story and the setting and time period were right up my alley. But I didn‘t think most of the characters were likeable or developed, they were very surface level, which the author may have intended. I also thought several aspects of the plot were quite unbelievable and a little too modern even though it was a period book. I‘m still glad I read it though, and the discussions were great! 10mo
catebutler The part I hated the most was Georgia and Annabelle‘s cousin. He was painted to be so evil and basically out to kill her, if he found her. And then at the end, he was made to be a somewhat sympathetic and likeable character. I was very confused. Especially since it was made to sound like he raped or abused Georgia in England?? I still don‘t quite know or understand this plot line. 10mo
Karisa @catebutler Agreed. The Giles character seemed convoluted. I guess it was a red herring to keep you guessing. I just found him annoying. Too much going on unnecessarily throughout the story for me. Our book club discussions kept me reading. Otherwise, I would have probably bailed. 10mo
CoffeeNBooks I liked this one, but didn't love it. I enjoyed it while I read it, but it probably isn't one I'd recommend to others. There was something about it that just didn't seem fully developed. 10mo
catebutler @Karisa I think you‘re right about the red herring. He could have been fleshed out a lot more. The discussions kept me going too, it‘s been fun to read all the comments and see what everyone thought. 10mo
Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks I agree with @CoffeeNBooks I liked it, but didn‘t love it and probably wouldn‘t recommend it. I‘m not familiar with Shakespeare so all of that was throwing me for a loop!! (edited) 10mo
Mdargusch I too liked it but didn‘t love it. I thought the mystery part was good and I was compelled to keep reading. And I definitely did not guess the ending so extra points for that! 10mo
Mdargusch @catebutler I totally agree with you - she tried to make the reader think he was evil and a rapist and then nothing. 10mo
JaclynW @catebutler @karisa That bothered me about Giles too. Wishy washy. 10mo
JaclynW @CoffeeNBooks @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks @Mdargusch I'm with you. I liked it but didn't love it. There were parts that could have been fleshed out (or removed) and made more interesting. 10mo

#BOTMBUDDYREAD Q8: Can you believe it was THE MOTHER???

daena I loved to hate her! The end, her backing into the flames. Too much that woman. She gave me Joan Crawford vibes. 10mo
AmyG I did NOT like her. So I was kind of happy it was her and happy the dam house burned to the ground. 10mo
Redwritinghood It didn‘t seem realistic to me. 10mo

TheBookHippie @daena WIRE HANGERS FOR SURE!!!! Just yikes!!! 10mo
TheBookHippie @AmyG RIGHT?!?! 10mo
TheBookHippie @Redwritinghood It unfortunately did to me. Scary!!!! 10mo
Mitch @AmyG yep me too! Didn‘t like the backing into the flames bit though, because (apart from being a terrible cliche) she kept in control of that ending... I wanted her to loose control, panic and have to loose the fight with the fire ( I know that makes me not a very nice person🤣!) 10mo
AmyG @Mitch Yes. Backig into the flames was way too dramatic. Seemed unnatural. 10mo
BookwormAHN @AmyG @Mitch Her ending was way to gothic and dramatic. 10mo
TheBookHippie @BookwormAHN I gotta say I could not believe what I was reading !!! 10mo
catebutler A twist worthy of Sherlock Holmes or Agatha Christie. Definitely a memorable ending to a highly unlikeable character. 10mo
CoffeeNBooks I didn't like her at all. She was a horrible, thoughtless, selfish person. 10mo
Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks I suspected her from the beginning when she was in no hurry for justice for Bay. 10mo
Mdargusch It was like the wicked witch in Wizard of Oz melting. But I did not see that coming at all. 10mo
JaclynW @daena @amyg @TheBookHippie @CoffeeNBooks @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks @catebutler @mitch @amyg @Redwritinghood I liked the ending and thought it was a fitting demise for such a horrible woman. It also seemed appropriate that SHE even controlled that. Ha! Evil, pure evil. 10mo

#BOTMBUDDYREAD Q7: Burke and Janie thoughts ? I never came to like their story. How did you like their love story? What do you think will happen with them?

daena I liked them. But it felt super far fetched for me. 10mo
AmyG @daena Yes. I found it to be a bit far-fetched and also forced. Like Janie had to have a love interest...who walks miles to save her. And thought they are from different worlds, none of it matters because love. A bit hokey. 10mo
Redwritinghood I didn‘t find their love story convincing. It would have been better if we had seen more of it as it was developing. 10mo
See All 20 Comments
TheBookHippie @Redwritinghood It was like filer!!! 10mo
TheBookHippie @AmyG hokey is the right word!!! 10mo
TheBookHippie @daena super far fetched just not believable to me 10mo
Mitch @AmyG well said.... super hokey, too hokey, unbelievably hokey! 10mo
Mitch I also thought the writing struggled her... I‘m not sure the author could write the love interest scenes as well as other parts of the story... 10mo
AmyG @Mitch Agreed. I think she struggled with the love scenes because of the time period. She tried tonkeep them within the norma for that time...while tryig to make them a bit “steamy”. Didn‘t work well. 10mo
TheBookHippie @Mitch I think it could have been left out 😳🤣🤷🏽‍♀️ just have them as friends .. 10mo
TheBookHippie @AmyG probably not her strength. 10mo
Karisa I couldn't quite believe that one. I think without the Anne history with Burke that whole subplot would've been much stronger. 10mo
TheBookHippie @Karisa just not well thought out maybe ???? The Anne thing was ANNOYING (edited) 10mo
BookwormAHN I thought they seemed a little to convenient. 10mo
catebutler I would have preferred Anne not having anything to do with Burke. It made it seem like Burke was a bit wishy-washy and a poor taste in character when he was meant to be able to see the truth and seek it out. Although that being said, he did meet and fall in love when he was young and an actor, and like he said. Being chased away and getting a job as a journalist was the best thing that happened to him. Maybe he grew up. 10mo
CoffeeNBooks I think the Burke part could have been written in without his history with Anne and his relationship with Janie. You all described it well: far-fetched and hokey. 10mo
Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks By this time I really didn‘t care 🤷🏼‍♀️ 10mo
Mdargusch I agree with you @mitch it definitely seemed like the story was much better when romance wasn‘t thrown in. 10mo
JaclynW @CoffeeNBooks Agreed! @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks @TheBookHippie @catebutler @BookwormAHN @karisa @mitch @amyg @daena @Redwritinghood I liked Burke. I liked Janie. #BOTMBUDDYREAD Q6: Anne surprised me by forcefully sticking up for Annabelle ! She redeemed herself quite a bit in this last section. It also appears she will take good care of the children. What were your thoughts here? Anne was quite the force to be reckoned with there at the end! Wow.

daena Anne was hands down my favorite character. Even in the moments where she frustrated me and made me roll my eyes. There were lots of layers to her character. 10mo
Redwritinghood I liked Anne even though she was sarcastic a little too often. She was just more practical than the others. 10mo
TheBookHippie @daena She really was written very well. Tons of depth. 10mo
See All 12 Comments
Mitch Too little too late for me! But I was pleased she begun to act better. 10mo
Karisa @Mitch Yes, Anne was so mean the whole way through. I couldn't quite trust her turnaround. Good that Janie and the twins were not alone though. 10mo
BookwormAHN I think she may have been in love with Bay but eventually respected Annebelle and that's why she took the kids. I also think she didn't want to ever marry again. 10mo
catebutler I actually found her turnaround to be a bit unbelievable. The optimist in me, liked how she softened towards the end and kind of justified her bad behaviour throughout because of how poorly treated she was by her aunt. But it did bother me immensely how she treated Janie and I also didn‘t like how she tried to upstage Georgie all the time, I feel like she was the home wrecker when it came to Bay and Annabelle, especially with the architect. 10mo
CoffeeNBooks I can't decide how I feel about Anne. It really bothered me how she taunted Georgie with the Bay & Pruyn situation. 10mo
Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks @catebutler I totally agree with you!!! 10mo
JaclynW @CoffeeNBooks @catebutler @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks I did not like how she treated others. But I liked her strong will. Hopefully she uses that power for good now! 10mo
Mdargusch I‘m feeling a little like you @catebutler it was a little unrealistic to me too. 10mo
rjsthumbelina @CoffeeNBooks I couldn't stand her for that, either. But I felt like it was her guilt over what happened and the fact the she really did love Bay (he was the only person she seemed to care about at all) that pushed her to change in the end. 10mo

daena I really liked Georgie. 10mo
Redwritinghood I liked her but was surprised that she turned out so level-headed considering her background. 10mo
AmyG The writer made it seem as if Georgie was a shady character in the beginning. The more I read, the more truthful and genuine she became. She was a woman trying to survive and make a life for herself and her children. 10mo

TheBookHippie @AmyG that‘s a great summary of how I felt too! I really came to like him! 10mo
BookwormAHN I liked Georgie, I hope somehow she survived. 10mo
catebutler I did like Georgie, and I think her character developed over the course of the book. It showed the depth and strength of her character right to the end. 10mo
CoffeeNBooks I really liked Georgie, and the fact that she was so strong. I felt so bad for her that she had to endure the childhood that she did- so sad! 10mo
Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks Having come from a bad childhood I was rooting from her... I was sad that she didn‘t survive... 😥 10mo

JaclynW @daena @Redwritinghood @AmyG @TheBookHippie @catebutler @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks @CoffeeNBooks @BookwormAHN I was rooting for her the entire book! I love a story where the underdog succeeds. Unfortunately she deserved more than she actually got.😢 10mo
catebutler @JaclynW I do think she found a little bit of happiness when she lived in the old house with Bay and her children. She seemed to be at her happiest then. It is a shame it couldn‘t last though. 10mo
JaclynW @catebutler Exactly! 10mo
rjsthumbelina @daena @AmyG @catebutler @CoffeeNBooks @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks @JaclynW I was so sad that Georgie didn't survive! I loved her and Janie both. She deserved better than she got, for sure. She had snippets of happiness, but even those were tinted by Bay's selfishness 10mo

#BOTMBUDDYREAD Q4: Janie realized in PANIC that the brooch aka the jewel was her mother‘s slowly releasing the truth ...did you figure it out before this ???

daena Yep. That was our clue. I put that one together. But it felt kind of anti climactic for me for some reason? 10mo
AmyG I knew the person who wore that brooch was the killer. I didn‘t figure out it was the mother. At one point I thought it was Anne. 10mo
Redwritinghood Honestly, I was clueless. I‘m not very good at mysteries. 10mo

TheBookHippie @Redwritinghood I hardly ever read them. It‘s interesting to in this story! 10mo
Mitch @TheBookHippie me too...a lot of ‘oh, really‘ 10mo
BookwormAHN I felt like things were pointing to Anne, but that would have been to obvious. But I didn't guess the Mom. 10mo
catebutler I did have my suspicions about it being her mother, but the reveal was fun. Her mad need for control led to the demise of the one person she loved the most, herself. 10mo
Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks I suspected it was the mother‘s or Anne‘s... 10mo
JaclynW @catebutler The reveal was fun. @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks Those were suspects too! 10mo
TheBookHippie @catebutler That is exactly right !!!! Very well put! 10mo
catebutler @TheBookHippie I think that‘s why her committing suicide in the fire actually worked for me. When the truth was released to the public, she wouldn‘t have been able to stand the notoriety or the snubbing of high society. It actually was quite humorous, when it was mentioned that her funeral was empty and society had turned on her. A very befitting ending to an unlikeable character. 10mo
Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks @catebutler yes!!!! So fitting!! 10mo
JaclynW @catebutler Well suited end for that evil character! 10mo
rjsthumbelina @AmyG @Redwritinghood I'm glad I wasn't the only one who missed it! I was getting frustrated bc I knew that I should have known... @catebutler you are absolutely right about Mrs. Van Duyvil. I loved that part of the ending 10mo

daena I think she could have fled. I am not sure if the description of her heavy bodice was a rationalization for her drowning or a way to distract us from her fleeing. 10mo

Redwritinghood Not sure. Might make a good sequel! 10mo

Karisa That did seem to be ambiguous. The bed in the old house seemed to be leaving the door open for her maybe still alive. I don't think she'd leave her twins though. 10mo
BookwormAHN I think she drowned. I also don't think she would have left the kids. 10mo
TheBookHippie @BookwormAHN I‘d like to imagine she made a deal with Anne. That they are all together. ❤️ 10mo
catebutler I honestly don‘t know! I could see it played both ways, but I do agree with others, the idea of her leaving her children, knowing how much she loved them, makes me lean a bit towards her drowning. 10mo
TheBookHippie @catebutler I can‘t see her leaving the kids either. 10mo
CoffeeNBooks I think she drowned. If she had been able to get away, I think she would have figured out a way to get back to her children. 10mo
JaclynW @AmyG @CoffeeNBooks I agree. She drowned. She wouldn't have left her kids. But it surely is ambiguous @karisa . @Redwritinghood It really could make for an interesting sequel. 10mo
Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks I can‘t see her leaving her children... 10mo
rjsthumbelina I agree with everyone here - I don't see a way that she would have left without her children. She loved them too much to run away and leave them. Also, I think she would have wanted the truth to come out about Mrs. Van Duyvil if she had lived 10mo

Mitch @TheBookHippie you find the best photos for our prompts! 👍🏼 10mo
Karisa @Mitch I agree. I thought it was a great choice for her. Too bad she didn't have that chance. Of all the characters, Georgie and her daughter were the only ones I was starting to root for. 10mo
BookwormAHN I think she would have. 10mo
JaclynW I think she would have and should have gotten a divorce. She wanted something more, something real. She deserved that. 10mo
catebutler It was very frustrating to me how he acted towards the end, especially with all that she had done and put up with for him. I do hope that she would have divorced and gone her own way. It seems like she was always protecting and doing everything for others, and sacrificing her own happiness and wants. 10mo
JaclynW @catebutler I agree with you. 10mo
CoffeeNBooks I think she would have, also. She was a strong woman who wanted more for herself and her children. 10mo
CoffeeNBooks @Mitch I agree! The pictures are always great! 10mo
rjsthumbelina @daena @AmyG you guys are so right - her kids' futures would have motivated her. @catebutler I was so frustrated too! Georgie deserved better. JaclynW @catebutler I wonder if the author has plans for a sequel that would tell more about the real Annabelle in Australia?? 10mo
rjsthumbelina @AmyG @JaclynW @CoffeeNBooks I don't think Giles had any idea that she wasn't dead. I liked watching him find out that she got away from him! I don't feel like Giles got what he deserved in the end, though. I am happy that Annabelle, at least, got her happy ending. @daena @Karisa I would definitely buy a book about Annabelle! 10mo

This book fell squarely in the middle for me - not great, but not horrible. Overall, there just wasn‘t enough there for me. The setting and characters weren‘t fully developed and the insights into the budding romance weren‘t enough to get me invested. The murder mystery and Georgie‘s background, however, were better developed, but not enough to make me really love this book. #botmbuddyread #botm 3⭐️

A historical mystery romance, set in New York & London around the turn of the nineteenth century. Whilst I liked some of the historical setting, it wasn't enough to pull me through. Constant referencing & name dropping - from Richard II & Anne Boleyn to Jack the Ripper & Edgar Allan Poe was annoying and the characters, mostly driven by 'appearance' and the need to maintain social standing are all thoroughly unlikeable. Not for me...

catiewithac I hated this one, too! 10mo
Andrew65 Still got a quarter of the book to go but still not doing it for me either. 10mo

Good but not quite great. There's just way too much going on in this book. Book was meh but still led to great discussions in book buddies meet up.

Recommended for serious lovers of Shakepeare though. 😊

I‘m so happy I finally checked this book off my #mounttbr list! Thank you for letting me join in on this #botmbuddyread! It‘s been fun to read everyone‘s comments!

I give this book 3 1/2 ⭐️ because 1) I was compelled to finish reading it and 2) I thought the mystery was a good one and I did not guess the ending.

I‘m not sure I‘m a fan of the author‘s writing style but I think I will try another of her books in the future.

Andrew65 I‘d agree about her writing style, but yet to finish. 10mo
Mdargusch Have you read anything else by her? @Andrew65 I just wonder if all her books are like this one? 10mo

JaclynW @TheBookHippie I want to figure out the mystery! It's driving me nuts! Maybe there is the whole kitchen sink that has been thrown in...good point. It does seem a but much. It's making my head hurt. Hopefully we get clear answers and aren't left to wonder. 10mo
Andrew65 @Mitch I‘m not feeling the quick read, feels like purgatory reading it at times and time seems to stop! 10mo
Andrew65 @TheBookHippie I think I‘d agree that it is trying too hard. 10mo
Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks @Andrew65 I agree!!! I‘ve read The Breakdown in one day, but this book is like a school project... 🤷🏼‍♀️🤦🏼‍♀️ 10mo
TheBookHippie @Andrew65 it‘s homework 😂😂🤷🏽‍♀️😳 10mo

TheBookHippie @Andrew65 I sit at my kitchen table to read this book and make questions 😂 usually I‘m with blanket warm beverage and a sticky note !! 10mo
Andrew65 @TheBookHippie That doesn‘t surprise me. I prefer books that have an easier reading style and more dialogue. 10mo
TheBookHippie @Andrew65 SAME!!! otherwise ...well it‘s school. We have enough school 😂🤷🏽‍♀️ 10mo
JaclynW @Andrew65 @TheBookHippie @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks Even more so like school work because we are supposed to be comparing/contrasting Shakespeare!! 😁 10mo

TheBookHippie @JaclynW Shakespeare is on the table too!! 10mo
Andrew65 @TheBookHippie We definitely do, thankfully got a week off as totally exhausted. Been a tough half-term. 10mo
TheBookHippie @Andrew65 It‘s been unreal. We‘ve had a ton of snow days. This helped. We have Monday off then back at it!!! 10mo

Andrew65 @TheBookHippie Thanks, going to hide away in my reading and take in a few days at the sea. We‘ve had little in the way of snow but children been in strange moods.... lack of sun! 10mo

Karisa @TheBookHippie You've done a terrific job with 5he questions! I feel like I'm in too deep now and need to finish. Not fully enjoying it but need plot resolutions. @Andrew65 Yes, homework-ish! 😂 But at least our classmates are wonderful! 10mo

JaclynW @Karisa Great classmates!! 😊 10mo
TheBookHippie @Karisa awe thanks !!! I agree I so enjoy my classmates and they make it fun!!! I can‘t wait to read the end!! 10mo
TheBookHippie @Andrew65 Good for you! Lack of sun and outside is wearing on my little readers on top of the news, their families being separated, worries of deportation, ICE RAIDS...hunger... all of it. 10mo
Andrew65 @TheBookHippie So much to deal with at such a young age and then we wonder why our children can‘t perform in a classroom 😰 10mo
Andrew65 @JaclynW @Karisa The best classmates. 10mo
Andrew65 @Karisa @TheBookHippie I agree, a brilliant job with the questions. 👏🙌👍 10mo
Andrew65 @CoffeeNBooks I agree, need to see how it‘s all resolved now. 10mo
AmyG @TheBookHippie Yes...excellent questions. Really made me think. And your poor “kids” . What a tragedy they even have to think of these things. I am enjoying the book...and want to see how it all ties up. 10mo
TheBookHippie @AmyG I have a harder time with people who think my beautiful little readers WHO ARE LEGAL born here should have their parents dragged away or have them all behind a wall so we don‘t all turn brown. Seriously this was said to my face...day in the life 🤯🤬😭 10mo

#BOTMBUDDYREAD Q7: Janie and Burke. Do you think they‘ll end up together? Will they find the truth? Do you like this part of the story?

Mitch Hate this part of the story..” lips on lips, palms on flesh. ....could taste the whiskey on Mr Burke‘s tongue”. It all reads like a trashy, trashy romance novel that was crammed every over used cliche into every sentence ! It was toe curling! 10mo

Stephaniereads1 I think she is lonely. I don‘t think she will ever disobey her mother so probably not. 10mo
JaclynW @mitch @TheBookHippie @Stephaniereads1 I'm not certain how I feel about Janie and Burke yet. Janie deserves someone genuine. She's trying to be her true self within her strict confines. I want to see her break free and get something that SHE wants. The involvement with Burke and Anne turned me off a bit to Janie and Burke. What did you think of that part? 10mo
TheBookHippie @JaclynW I want her to live HER life apart from all this. Then she can be herself and live her win true life?? Not with Burke though... figures about Anne...🤮 10mo
Andrew65 @Mitch @TheBookHippie I have to agree with both of you! ‘A trashy romance novel‘ sums it up well. Burke was with Anne, so that is enough to switch off him but then again he was on,y 16. I wouldn‘t be surprised if they end up together though. 10mo
Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks I want to see Janie happy with someone other than Burke.. too much water under the bridge there!!! 10mo
kspenmoll @Andrew65 @Mitch @Stephaniereads1 @JaclynW I also hope Jane can break free & find a place for herself in the world with going to a mother‘s control to a man‘s. The fact that Anne has been involved with him makes him suspect even if he was just 16. 10mo
Andrew65 @kspenmoll There is something about him that concerns me too. 10mo
TheBookHippie @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks I agree!!!!! Find someone else!!!! 10mo
CoffeeNBooks I'm not sure how I feel about the Janie/Burke situation. I agree that the kissing scene was a bit much- it seemed out of place, and the writing of it seemed oddly written and out of place in the story. I think maybe Burke has good intentions and is trying to redeem himself, but I'm not sure. I think Janie needs to get out from the entire circle of society in which she's confined. 10mo
Karisa @JaclynW I so agree! That whole, by the way Mr. Burke was once involved with Anne subplot was disturbing! Really?! Isn't this a very big city? He's not even in their social circle. The chances of him knowing her are minuscule. He's Janie's only ray of hope though... bleh 10mo
JaclynW @TheBookHippie Agreed! 10mo
JaclynW @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks Probably so! Too much water under that bridge! 🙄 10mo
JaclynW @Karisa Yes, disturbing. Weird coincidences. 10mo
AmyG I‘m with @CoffeeNBooks on this. I am not sure. Their part seems like a whole other book. I am curious to see how that turns out. Prt of me thinks Janie may give up all of it for him. 10mo
Mdargusch I so agree with you @Mitch ! Listening to it on audio , the narrator makes it even more trashy. 10mo
Mitch @Mdargusch oh my goodness. I do t think I could take listening to it out Loud! 🤣 10mo

#BOTMBUDDYREAD Q6: We have loads more Shakespeare referenced in this section and this book is reminding me of when I first read The twelfth night: I was so confused I was keeping charts of who was whom and really whom and who did what and who really did what ...that‘s how I feel reading this story!! What are your thoughts ? Like -loathe -confused -intrigued ???

*THE TWELFTH NIGHT PICTURED

Stephaniereads1 I‘m really enjoying it. I love the references and the characters. 10mo
JaclynW I'm blind to the references, so yes, I'm confused! 10mo
Andrew65 @JaclynW Ditto, totally blind to the references. I‘m just finding the book such a struggle to read, feels a lack of flow to the book. Not enjoying the physical reading of it but enjoying some of the story line. But will most definitely be glad when finished the book. 10mo
See All 19 Comments
CoffeeNBooks @Stephaniereads1 I love the references also! 10mo
kspenmoll @Andrew65 @JaclynW I never read The play so I have no reference points either. 10mo
Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks Confused and a struggle!! I hate to admit that!! 🤦🏼‍♀️ Who chose this book anyway?! Lol 😂 10mo
TheBookHippie @Stephaniereads1 @CoffeeNBooks I adore Shakespeare, when I read this particular comedy I was 19 I think the first time -having just reread it I enjoyed it but it‘s still crazy to read. I just wonder for the masses who don‘t know all the literature mentioned is it then hard to read this book. 10mo
Karisa It does feel like an unnecessarily fussy a plot. But I guess it fits with the time/place/social setting. It makes for a tough read at times. Almost threw in the towel when Anne and Mr. Burke's past was revealed. Too much! 10mo
JaclynW @Karisa Too much indeed! 10mo
AmyG I hve no clue about the references. So I am just reading this as the story it is. 10mo
Mdargusch I agree @Andrew65 - the flow gets interrupted by so many back stories and side characters that it‘s hard to read or follow on audio. However, there‘s enough mystery to keep me intrigued. 10mo
TheBookHippie @Mdargusch WHY ALL THE BACK STORY 🤷🏽‍♀️ it makes it convoluted! 10mo
TheBookHippie @AmyG I wondered if that was confusing or is it worse to know?! 10mo
AmyG @TheBookHippie I don‘t find it confusing. I don‘t even know what I shoukd be confused about (I don‘t know the Shakespeare story). 10mo
TheBookHippie @AmyG I think because the Shakespeare is a crazy story and so is this one both betrayal ridden!!! I try to find hidden meaning in it to see if I can solve the mystery! 🤣🙄 10mo
Andrew65 @AmyG I‘m with you Amy, i don‘t know what I should be confused about. 🤣 (edited) 10mo
TheBookHippie @Andrew65 @AmyG I wish It wasn‘t in the book !! I read Shakespeare daily and therefore it‘s fresh, it‘s a weird pairing in my mind. Some people like it. I do if it‘s once or twice -this is constant! (edited) 10mo
Andrew65 @TheBookHippie Step away from the Shakespeare! 😳🙄 @AmyG (edited) 10mo

#BOTMBUDDYREAD Q5: Annabelle letting Bay have his lover at their house openly. How did you feel about this, best choice, bad choice? Does it protect them all the most? Does the saying but you didn‘t see what choices she had to chose from apply here? Do you believe they truly love one another Bay & Annabelle? Just not in a conventional way? The quote “that she loved him she knew that he loved her -she also knew but it was never that simple was it?”

Mitch I get they sense she loves him a lot and she is being practical, protecting her family....I think you can see that love in how hurt she is by Bay not putting her first, keeping small moments private and always putting his lover before her. I think he might have loved her, but now he has the scope to love others I think he‘s forgotten his love for Annabelle. 10mo
TheBookHippie @Mitch This part made me so sad for Annabelle. I believe she truly loves him. 10mo
Mitch @TheBookHippie I think she does too 10mo
See All 18 Comments
Stephaniereads1 I think she really loves him and that he saved her and now she is trying to save him. It‘s sad. I think he does love her but more as a friend since his his new friend has arrived. 10mo
Mitch @Stephaniereads1 yeah... I think Bay is very selfish here...he‘s happy with the arrangement, it gives him what he wants with no sacrifices. 10mo
kspenmoll @Stephaniereads1 @Mitch @TheBookHippie I think she does love him. He loves her as well but cannot give himself to her totally. Her love is big & generous because she accepts that they live together & is protecting him from society by allowing herself to been seen as the one in the wrong. 10mo
JaclynW @Mitch @TheBookHippie @Stephaniereads1 I'm in agreement with you all. It's so sad for Annabelle. Bay is forgetting her. She truly loves him. I do think he cares for her as well. Like great friends. He seems to be giddy at the prospect of being semi-open (which is understandable). What a sacrifice for Annabelle. It shows her true character though. 10mo
TheBookHippie @kspenmoll impossible situation. I feel bad for everyone but mostly Annabelle. 10mo
CoffeeNBooks I feel so bad for Annabelle/Georgie. I think Bay is loving her the best that he can, but I think he should be a little more thoughtful about how he acts around Pruyn when she's there. 10mo
Andrew65 @Mitch Well said! I totally agree. 👍 10mo
Andrew65 What a truly impossible situation for Annabelle, I truly feel for her and she deserves so much better. Clearly she loves Bay but why did he chase her so much at the beginning of the book? Truly puzzling unless he was trying to run away from his true nature. (edited) 10mo
TheBookHippie @Andrew65 it all makes me so very sad ...I think he truly fell in love with a kindred spirit at least he thought and then I think he tried but just could not ... 10mo
TheBookHippie @CoffeeNBooks I agree. He should be more sensitive to her feelings. 10mo
Karisa It is a making the best of a sad situation thing. I'm not sure what other choices Bay would have had at that time/place. It's too bad he couldn't have been honest with her from the start. As it is, she made the best choice possible for her family I think. (That picture is so perfect, @TheBookHippie 😀👍. I can only imagine that Google search's keywords.) 10mo
JaclynW @Andrew65 I do think Bay was trying to fit himself into acceptable society. And he found someone, his kindred spirit @TheBookHippie , that he thought he could make it work. But that usually doesn't really work too well.... A sad situation for all involved. 10mo
TheBookHippie @Karisa I‘m always worried what will pop up after I search for BOTM pics 😂😂😂😂😳 10mo
Karisa @TheBookHippie 😂 We can vouch for you if someone questions your search history. 🤣🤣🤣 10mo
AmyG I think they have a deep love for each other. But. She has no interest in sex (I think she was either abused or raped). I also think she is letting him have his lover in the house for selfish reasons, too. Keeps him happy, so no sex for her. Keeps the secret in the house so it‘s not revealed and becomes a scandal. If he‘s happy their life goes on as it should. (edited) 10mo

#BOTMBUDDYREAD Q4: Annabelle/Georgie I like more and more. Do you think she had premonitions ? What do you think happened before she met Bay? Where is the true Annabelle ? Is it her?

Stephaniereads1 I don‘t think she is the real Annabelle. I wonder if Giles killed her or If she ran away. 10mo
CoffeeNBooks For awhile I thought Annabelle and Georgie were the same person, but there were enough clues that changed my mind about that. Or maybe that's just what Lauren Willig wants me to think. 🤔 I hope by the end of the book, we find out the truth about that situation and what actually happened to Annabelle. 10mo
kspenmoll @CoffeeNBooks @Stephaniereads1 Agree with you both; think she is Georgie now. The mystery is where is Annabelle? Dead? 10mo
See All 19 Comments
JaclynW @kspenmoll @CoffeeNBooks @Stephaniereads1 I'm puzzled too! I do think Georgie is playing Annabelle. Giles may have had something to do with Annabelle's disappearance. So puzzling! 10mo
Andrew65 I think Giles has everything to do with what has gone on. I wonder if there is a double bluff going on and think she may be Annabelle although everything is pointing to her not being Annabelle. Want to know more about Giles and what he did. Is he the killer of Bay. Is Annabelle dead or has Giles got her or is something else going on. Can‘t see Annabelle as the killer. We need more information and approaching the last quarter so should get it. 10mo
TheBookHippie @Andrew65 Giles is the secret keeper I‘m sure if it too!!! No way can I see Annabelle‘s hand in this! 10mo
TheBookHippie @Stephaniereads1 I wonder too!! Did Giles kill her ? 10mo
TheBookHippie @kspenmoll did Giles kill her or did she run ? Did Annabelle defend Georgie and die??? 10mo
Karisa @Andrew65 Giles has a motive to discredit her as Annabelle since her children (or at least son) would have a claim to estate. The book seems to be insisting that she is Georgie though. I have not spotted any hints as to real Annabelle's status though if Georgie is not her. Gosh, this plot's convoluted! 10mo
Andrew65 @Karisa That‘s what makes me think it is Annabelle. Why would he have been looking for her in the first place if it wasn‘t Annabelle. Did he think he had to get rid of her still. Then when she was (possibly) got rid of too publicly try to prove it wasn‘t Annabelle. 10mo
JaclynW @Karisa Very convoluted! 10mo
JaclynW @Andrew65 Good point! 10mo
AmyG I get the feeling she is Georgie, half sister of Annabelle. If Annabelle is dead, does Georgie have any rights as a half-sister to the estate? I also got the feelig that Giles did something to Georgie...rape her, abuse her? I wonder if Gukes did kill Annabelle and maybe thought he did something to Georgie- only to find out she is alive. 10mo
Mdargusch Yes. I‘m back to thinking Georgie is not Annabelle . 10mo
rjsthumbelina @Stephaniereads1 @CoffeeNBooks @kspenmoll @JaclynW @Andrew65 @TheBookHippie I think Georgie is NOT Annabelle. I think, too, though, that Giles and Georgie have some deep secrets. I did get the impression that Giles raped Georgie. I also think he is behind whatever happened to Annabelle. I'm torn between thinking that he thought Georgie was dead and that he didn't think Georgie had it in her to make something of her life. 10mo
rjsthumbelina I love Georgie a lot though - I am pulling for her to be alive and hiding from Giles. I want her to somehow have a happy ending. She should at least get to be reunited with her children 10mo
Andrew65 @rjsthumbelina Yes, be good ending for Annabelle to still be alive. 10mo
kspenmoll @rjsthumbelina I Hope Annabelle is alive- and Georgie knows this. 10mo
JaclynW @rjsthumbelina I would like Annabelle to still be alive too. 10mo

#BOTMBUDDYREAD Q3: Anne. I do not like her. I do not. I think she is pure evil . What is she? What has she done? Are we ever going to get to the bottom of her and Bay? Thoughts? Why is it such a secret. Why is their relationship kept so tight against everyone else ? Why did Anne LIE on the stand? Whose jewel is it?

Mitch She‘s even more horrid than the mother.... at least the mothers actions are driven by her own moral compass, even if I don‘t share her point of view. But Anne... she like one of those toxic people who are driven by the misery on others.... not at all pleasant! 10mo
TheBookHippie @Mitch I agree. Pure evil. Toxic. 10mo
Mitch @TheBookHippie we need @amyg she‘ll help us see some positives! 10mo
See All 17 Comments
CoffeeNBooks I can't figure out Anne's motives. She seems to be all over the place with her need to make people around her miserable. I'm curious about how she's going to retaliate against Janie for her frienship with Burke. 10mo
Stephaniereads1 I feel like some of her behavior is caused by the mother. But she is definitely toxic. 10mo
kspenmoll @CoffeeNBooks @Stephaniereads1 @Mitch @TheBookHippie She does seem to exist to make people miserable but I feel maybe we don‘t know enough yet to know why except the that Mother has so much power over her & since she knows that mother is all about appearances she deliberately shocks her with her wildness. I am reserving judgement! 10mo
JaclynW @Mitch @CoffeeNBooks @Stephaniereads1 @TheBookHippie Look at her background. Her father screwed things up for her. She's stuck with this evil aunt. She has also been put into a place of survival. This mindset doesn't have you always thinking clearly. She may be gathering information/secrets to assure HER place, make sure that she's taken care of. Blackmail. Evil, yes, but understandable in a way. Who knows what her real relationship is with Bay... 10mo
Andrew65 Another wonderful character, not! We do need to o find out more about her and Bay. He likes men so what was that all about? Find it hard to find anything redeeming about her. (edited) 10mo
Andrew65 I‘m puzzled by that jewel! 10mo
TheBookHippie @Andrew65 me too I reread way too much trying to make it fit! 10mo
Karisa @Mitch @Andrew65 @JaclynW I agree. It feels like we are missing a piece of the puzzle with Anne. Felt like there was some hinting that she and Bay could have actually been siblings (look alike, close relationship...). Maybe dear mother needed that proper male heir and Anne's "ruined" family made a deal to secure son's status??? (Sorry, I love making predictions.) 10mo
TheBookHippie @Karisa ohhhh that‘s a good thought! 10mo
JaclynW @Karisa Interesting idea! 10mo
Andrew65 @Karisa Making predictions is what makes mystery books good to read. An interesting prediction...watch this space. 10mo
AmyG @Karina Great thoughts there. I love a good prediction..true or not. I am not too sire what‘s up with Anne. There‘s another secret there, for sure. 10mo
Mdargusch @Karisa that‘s a great theory! 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼 10mo
rjsthumbelina @Mitch @CoffeeNBooks She does seem super toxic and like she is trying to bring others down. I wonder if that is in relation to the power conversation. Anne doesn't have much power, even more so now that she is divorced. Maybe trying to manipulate situations and feelings is the only way she has to have power in a situation? Also, I am definitely thinking there's a big secret between her and Bay left unrevealed so far, but I'm not sure what it is 10mo

#BOTMBUDDYREAD Q2: THE MOTHER.
Cold. Odd. Full of religiosity. Brushes Janie‘s hand away when poor Jane tries to comfort her. Quotes religious type sayings “or such peace as we may find in this fallen world...” Wields power over everyone. Seems so evil to me. Also yikes: “ one does not marry for the man one marries to please ones family” What do you make of her???

Mitch She has no redeeming features! Her frigid sense of propriety and lack of compassion for others isn‘t winning her any fans! 10mo
CoffeeNBooks I agree with @Mitch - I don't think she has any redeeming qualities. But, I wonder if she's become who she is because of her strict adherence to all of the social etiquette rules. She seems like a completely heartless woman. 10mo
TheBookHippie @Mitch She is so much my mother I can‘t get past it, no compassion and heartless @CoffeeNBooks I wonder too, what makes someone so soulless?! Is it the rigidness of it all?! 10mo
See All 24 Comments
kspenmoll She is horrid. Despicable. I think there is probably some of it due to wanting to@obey social rules but you could do that & be compassionate. She is soulless & epitomizes evil- some of that is her nature. Although we don‘t know what her upbringing was like. @Mitch @CoffeeNBooks 10mo
TheBookHippie @kspenmoll Yes there is always a CHOICE. You can CHOSE to be a decent human regardless ... 10mo
Stephaniereads1 She‘s a horrible woman. The control she holds over her children and Anna is awful. It clear she favors Bay but I don‘t think he is safe from her pressures. 10mo
TheBookHippie @Stephaniereads1 Typical to favor the boy child in this culture, however I‘m with you, I don‘t think he fares much better! 10mo
JaclynW @Mitch @CoffeeNBooks @TheBookHippie @stephaniereads1 @kspenmoll I think she's a product of her time. Following those societal rules was her way of protecting herself and her family. Assuring them security and power. It is despicable. There is no heart in it. It seems purely survival. A place many women I'm sure were in at the time. 10mo
Andrew65 @kspenmoll You say it so will, totally horrid but to me was created by the society and the times. Appearance Is everything and how others percival you. Reminds me so much of my mother in laW! She does favour the boy but still wants to dominate him too. She has to appear strong no matter what. (edited) 10mo
TheBookHippie @Andrew65 your mil may be my mother in disguise !!!! Horrid. 10mo
TheBookHippie @JaclynW maybe, I‘m sure she got a raw deal, but I still maintain there‘s always a choice. Yes many women were in horrific predicaments during this time. Just repulsive. 10mo
Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks She is horrid!!! Could she have possibly found out about Bay‘s secrets and “taken care” of things to save face??? 10mo
TheBookHippie @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks I think she knows for sure!! 10mo
Andrew65 @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks That also wouldn‘t be a surprise. @TheBookHippie 10mo
Karisa @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks I've been wondering if dear mother is responsible too. She's all to eager to support Mr. Lacey and place the blame on Georgie. Maybe they are in cahoots? But I also don't trust Anne with all the testimony deceptions. *sigh* 10mo
TheBookHippie @Karisa OH YES!!! She‘s either guilty or guilty by association!!! 10mo
JaclynW @TheBookHippie I agree with you. There is always choice. But that survival need can sure cloud rational thought. 10mo
JaclynW @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks I wondered that too! I'm sure she knows! 10mo
JaclynW @Karisa For sure! 10mo
AmyG I believe she is who she is because of society and because of her past- her childhood, her having to live by society‘s rules. She married a man because she had to, not because she wanted to. Sometimes the people who grow up with loss of control of their lives become the most controlling. With that said, there is also the nature of the person- kind or not. She...is not. (edited) 10mo
Mdargusch I almost feel like the author went overboard making her so awful, cold, and unfeeling. 10mo
rjsthumbelina @TheBookHippie @kspenmoll @Mitch @CoffeeNBooks I would LOVE to get more backstory about her! I believe something (probably many things) must have happened to her to make her so rigidly callous and make her decide to appear so unfeeling. I have a feeling her marriage was terrible, though Janie paints her father as a great man. But Janie and Bay certainly didn't have a loving relationship as a role model... 10mo
kspenmoll @TheBookHippie Totally agree about choice- it‘s as if she made a choice to struck adherence to social mores no matter the cost to others. No redeeming quality in her! 10mo
kspenmoll @AmyG So true & well said about people who have no control over there lives trying to control others. 10mo

#BOTMBUDDYREAD Q1: “The law might constrain behaviour, but it lacks the power to shape it” to the power Janie feels over Mr. Burke: she relishes in this power. The mother wields power. The women have no power. The men have power. Bay cannot go against the power. Annabelle doesn‘t bow to it and Anne fights dirty for it. Can power shape behavior? What do you think of all these power struggles? Is it part of the story ? Is life this way today ?

kspenmoll Traveling on highway from Cape Cod so my connection may drop. But all the power struggles between mother & her adult kids is based on her ability to manipulate them emotionally. Bay was able to detach himself somewhat because of money, which neither Jane nor Anne had access to - both also financially dependent. That mother was horrid- she let Anne know she had power over her. Anne‘s behavior was indeed shaped by this- drove her to marry & act out. 10mo
TheBookHippie @kspenmoll be safe!!! Yes, I so agree, all these power struggles are shaping people in a horrific manor!!! It‘s crazy. 10mo
kspenmoll Cheering Annabelle who was strong & smart enough to see Bay‘s mother clearly. 10mo

TheBookHippie @kspenmoll me too. It‘s what I do, did and will continue to do 🙌🏻 10mo
kspenmoll @TheBookHippie My sister is driving😀 10mo
Stephaniereads1 Power is definitely a part of this book. I think it‘s still apart of society but I think we have more options. Where they bound by societal pressures. 10mo
TheBookHippie @Stephaniereads1 especially women in this time frame, so few rights and they were virtually property 😭 (edited) 10mo
Andrew65 Power is evident in a number of ways in this book. We have the power of money and the power of status (both gender and class based). As for the mother don‘t get me started. Annabelle seems to be the only nice person and possibly Janie (to some extent). Unfortunately power is still wielded by the few in society. 10mo
JaclynW @kspenmoll Cheering Annabelle for sure! Is she the only intelligent one? 10mo
JaclynW @Andrew65 You are so correct! Power! It still has it's claws in our society. It always will I'm sure. At least there is *a bit* more opportunity to counter that nowadays. 10mo
JaclynW @TheBookHippie I can't imagine being someone's Property! 10mo
JaclynW @kspenmoll @TheBookHippie @Andrew65 @Stephaniereads1 Power does strange things to people. It most definitely can shape behavior and usually never in a positive way. This book has so many examples of that! Having power makes people feel secure. There is nothing like feeling safe and secure, right? We all want that. But would we all go to the degree of ruthlessness to get it? I don't believe so. I do think most people have a moral compass. ⬇️ 10mo
JaclynW @kspenmoll @TheBookHippie @Andrew65 @Stephaniereads1 And just to bring current day into this... Just look at our current political climate. Trump is a power hungry individual with no moral compass (in my opinion). He doesn't seem to be driven by a greater good or concern for the masses. Power is comfort to him. Whatever gives him this, will be the direction he takes. Trump isn't the only one guilty of this, just an easy one to illustrate. 😉 10mo
Andrew65 @JaclynW Class power is still in too prevalent in the U.K., we‘ll keep the masses in their place. Gender power isn‘t as strong as at the time of this book but that still has a long way to go to be truly evened our. (edited) 10mo
TheBookHippie @JaclynW I so agree. Power hungry angry leaders 🤮 10mo
JaclynW @Andrew65 A long way to go for sure. Much of society is designed to keep certain people "in their place". It goes back to the safety/security thing for those at the top. ? I do hate this. The poverty and struggle that many have to face, while others are high in the clouds. So unfair. 10mo
Karisa I agree with so many on this one! Power struggles shape the characters' actions so much just as they do today in our nations. Human nature probably. So hard to let go of the impulse to control or at least not to BE controlled by others. 10mo
JaclynW @Karisa Human nature, yes! It takes that higher level thought process to navigate and not give in to impulsivity. 10mo
AmyG Yes to you all! @kspenmoll @TheBookHippie @Stephaniereads1 @Andrew65 @JaclynW @Karisa Also...I found that each person holds their own power yet at the same time is powerless. I.E. Power is so many things...money, status, position in family or society...and then there is the power of secrets and the knowledge of them. (edited) 10mo
kspenmoll @JaclynW Agree with your assessment of current day politics & power. 10mo
JaclynW @AmyG Exactly! 10mo
JaclynW @kspenmoll We can do so much better, right?? 🙄😏 10mo
kspenmoll @JaclynW Yes, we can. Keeping hope alive! 💕 10mo
JaclynW @kspenmoll I'm trying! 💕 10mo
rjsthumbelina @Andrew65 I agree: I have been paying special attention to the power dynamics in play in regards to class. It makes the relationship between Janie and Mr. Burke so much more interesting! But also, I think I would argue that the most powerful character in the novel is a woman, Mrs. Van Duyvil. I can't think of anyone else voluntarily wielding as much power, or even involuntarily. I think the argument could also be made that Bay is pretty powerless 10mo
Andrew65 @rjsthumbelina His mother has definitely made Bay pretty powerless. 10mo
kspenmoll @rjsthumbelina She definitely had her thumb on everyone & was the dominant power wielding figure in the book. Everyone was hers to manipulate. 10mo
