I Am Half-Sick of Shadows
I Am Half-Sick of Shadows | C Alan Bradley
"Every Flavia de Luce novel is a reason to celebrate."--USA Today ALAN BRADLEY, AUTHOR OF THE MOST AWARD-WINNING SERIES DEBUT OF ANY YEAR, RETURNS WITH ANOTHER IRRESISTIBLE FLAVIA DE LUCE NOVEL. "[Alan] Bradley has created one of the most original, charming, devilishly creative and hilarious detectives of any age or any time."--Bookreporter It's Christmastime, and Flavia de Luce--an eleven-year-old sleuth with a passion for chemistry--is tucked away in her laboratory, whipping up a concoction to ensnare Saint Nick. But she is soon distracted when a film crew arrives at Buckshaw, the de Luces' decaying English estate, to shoot a movie starring the famed Phyllis Wyvern. Amid a raging blizzard, the entire village of Bishop's Lacey gathers at Buckshaw to watch Wyvern perform, yet nobody is prepared for the evening's shocking conclusion: a body found strangled to death with a length of film. But who among the assembled guests would stage such a chilling scene? As the storm worsens and the list of suspects grows, Flavia must ferret out a killer hidden in plain sight. "[Flavia is] the most intrepid and charming adolescent chemist/detective/busybody in all of rural, post-World War II England."--The Seattle Times "Quirky and delightful . . . Flavia is a classic literary character who manages to appeal to both young and old readers equally."--Wichita Falls Times Record News "Bradley's plot twists and turns delightfully."--Fort Worth Star-Telegram NAMED ONE OF THE BEST MYSTERIES OF THE YEAR BY THE SEATTLE TIMES

Thanks to everyone who sent good wishes for my surgery. Recovery is going well, and I‘ve been able to finish this book. It is my favorite Flavia mystery yet. There‘s a little less “perils of Pauline” feeling, but it opens up some new questions about Flavia‘s family. A good mystery, and a delightful cast of characters. Looking forward to the next in the series.

We are home from vacation. I have the laundry mostly caught up, restocked the refrigerator, and am getting things organized in prep for surgery and recovery next week. I have to do a webinar on plant identification this afternoon, but then I plan to sit down with the tagged book. What I really want to do is go back to the mountains and do some more hiking. Picture is on the trail at Brasstown Bald.

Who is in charge of stickers on books? 😤This one is difficult to remove and of course it‘s right over the title. Pray I don‘t ruin the cover. 😥😅 got this for $1.50 though! Hope you all had a great Sunday, and have an easy Monday! 🥰

britt_brooke 🤬 I hate stickers on books! 9mo
Lindy Try heating the sticker with a hairdryer. 9mo
Shannon_McKinney I hate when they put those stickers that won‘t come off without the sticky stuff staying on there. 😤 best of luck. 9mo

TheSpineView Put a little water on the sticker, only on the sticker, and let it sit to soften the glue. Then don't pick it, instead use the pad of your thumb to roll it up. Depending on the type of glue you should be able to remove with no damage. 9mo
TheSpineView @Lindy Good idea but the hair dryer might not get hot enough. 9mo
erzascarletbookgasm Spray a little WD-40 onto a cotton ball/pad, soak it over the price tag and leave it for a few seconds. Gently lift up the tag with a paper knife (or something sharp). Works like magic. 9mo
vkois88 Stickers on books are the bane of my existence. I just had this exact conversation yesterday after he had me run downstairs to pick up a book for him, since he knew I'd know where it was 😂😂😂 9mo

Another enchanting romp with Flavia de Luce 😊 We meet celebrities along with some of our old favorites all trapped inside Buckshaw by a xmas snowstorm during the filming of a movie. We see some kindness between the sisters heretofore unknown-now whether this is a xmas aberration or a change we‘ll have to see. I love Flavia‘s not all kosher methods of figuring things out & we get fireworks! What more could one ask for? Harooo!!!

Laura317 I‘m starting this today. Glad it‘s a good one. 1y
Suzze I am a giant fan of this series, but this was probably my least favorite. I missed Flavia out and about! 1y
Redjewel_7734 @Laura317 Yay! I look forward to hearing what you think of it 😊 1y
Redjewel_7734 @Suzze I‘m so loving this series! I did miss the out & aboutness of the other stories but I did like the coziness of being trapped in Buckshaw. I wouldn‘t want to be stuck there for every story but it worked for the one brief stretch of this one 😊 1y

Another audiobook read; book 4 in the series. Celebrities descend on Buckshaw over Christmas, and Flavia has to solve a murder, this time in her own house. Flavia had a few moments in this one that she behaves in a sympathetic light...she‘s usually showing how brainy she is. But, it was a hint of slight maturity. Placing the next audiobook on hold right now.

I quite enjoyed this 4th Flavia novel although it wasn‘t that much about the actual murder but more about Flavia and her family. I still love Flavia‘s humour and I enjoy reading about the emotional moments in her family when she, her father or her sisters open up a little bit. Btw, I first realised that the books are named after lines from the poems quoted on the first pages! Never noticed this before as the German editions have different titles.

Money, to Daffy, meant books, and even though Buckshaw contained more books than the Bishop‘s Lacey Free Library, to my sister, it was not enough.

Eleven year-old Flavia can manufacture explosives for firecrackers. When I was 11 I was lucky if I could crochet a half decent pot holder:

“I had concocted the gunpowder myself with nitre, sulphur, charcoal, and a happy heart. When working with explosives, I‘ve found that attitude is everything.”

I stopped reading the Flavia books after A Red Herring Without Mustard because they seemed to lose their way. This one benefits of tighter narrative structure, and since it‘s shorter than the usual books, being almost a Christmas special, is better than most.

#BooksAcrossOceans #day12 #SixWordSaturday I've just realised, after sorting through my book titles, that most titles are of an uneven number. There's plenty of 3 or 5 word titles, but not that many 6 word ones. Maybe it's an alliteration thing, odd number titles seem to roll off the tongue better.

#JuneTunz #day6 #BrokedownPalace Flavia deLuce's home, Buckshaw is totally a broke down palace. A once beautiful grand manor in England, declining finances have meant it's gradually falling into disrepair. It even rains in Flavia's bedroom & she has plans of turning the bottom floor of her wing into an ice skating rink because the heat doesn't work anymore. From the outside the place looks gorgeous, but inside it's still Victorian era mostly.
