The Largesse of the Sea Maiden
The Largesse of the Sea Maiden: Stories | Denis Johnson
Twenty-five years after Jesus Son, a haunting new collection of short stories on aging, mortality, and transcendence, from National Book Award winner and two-time Pulitzer Prize finalist Denis Johnson The Largesse of the Sea Maiden is the long-awaited new story collection from Denis Johnson. It follows the groundbreaking, highly acclaimed Jesus Son. Written in the same luminous prose, this collection finds Johnson in new territory, contemplating old age, mortality, the ghosts of the past, and the elusive and unexpected ways the mysteries of the universe assert themselves. Finished shortly before Johnsons death in May 2017, this collection is the last word from a writer whose work will live on for many years to come. Praise for Denis Johnson Denis Johnson was the best American writer of the past twenty-five years.New Republic He was the kind of writer who comes along once in a generation, if that often: a true original, in the same league as Melville and Whitman.n+1 A true American artist . . . a revelator for this still new century. The New York Times The God I want to believe in has a voice and a sense of humor like Denis Johnsons.Jonathan Franzen Nobody wrote with more brutality and mercy, more hilarity and grace. What a genius he was.Elizabeth McCracken Our most poetic American short-story writer since Hemingway.George Saunders Prose of amazing power and stylishness.Philip Roth When Denis Johnson is justly praised for his voice, I always think, just the one? He has an eerie symphony at his command.Karen Russell His prose tiptoes a tightrope between peace and calamity.Anthony Doerr His lonely spaces and stunned lives have a hair-trigger fascination that is American to the core.Don DeLillo Denis Johnson was and is, without question, significant and great.Michael Cunningham

An hour to spare between appointments this afternoon led to an impromptu HPB stop. The de Beauvoir, previously unpublished & with an introduction by Atwood, sounds interesting. At 150 pages it's a bit less intimidating than a few other bricks by de Beauvoir that have been lingering on my TBR. I can't wait to return to Strout"s world. Olive Kitteridge is one of my favorite characters of the past few years. I've been thinking about Denis Johnson ?

vivastory the past couple of days after watching a deep dive Book Tube video on the year that a Pulitzer wasn't awarded to a fiction nominee & Train Dreams was a finalist. I've heard Cement Garden is a heartwarming family tale. J/k 🙃 2y

merelybookish @vivastory I find it a bit uneven. But I have learned about writers I didn't know about & learned more about some that I already liked. 2y
BarbaraBB I love De Beauvoir but didn‘t know about this one. The McEwan is tough but so good and Strout, of course 💝 2y
vivastory @BarbaraBB I'm glad to hear your endorsement for the McEwan. I almost picked up My Name is Lucy Barton instead, but I figured I'd start the Lucy Barton books after the Kitteridge. 2y

Megabooks The Denis Johnson was excellent. I‘ve read it twice. Some of the stories follow up on characters from (edited) 2y
vivastory @batsy It caught my interest that he was nicknamed Ian Macabre after his first few books were released. 2y
vivastory @Megabooks I was unaware of the Jesus Son connection. That is one of my favorite story collections of all time, but I haven't read it in at least 15 years. I will definitely read it again before Largesse etc When I was in college I was obsessed with the following 2y
Megabooks @vivastory sounds interesting! I was not reading much fiction in 03 so I missed it. Will look for it used. Thanks! 2y
vivastory @Megabooks I can't really vouch for it now because it's been over 20 years since I read it. I'm curious to reread it, but as there are several other works by him I will probably wait until I make my way through his catalog. I have heard Tree of Smoke is brilliant. I think he won the NBA for that. 2y
Megabooks I enjoy reading HF set in my lifetime (post 1980), but when I read that Egan last week (from 2001), I realize there is something to reading books that aren‘t quite classics but are farther on the backlist. And important lesson for me! 2y

I'm sometimes wary of posthumous works, but this book had been completed before Johnson's death and had always been intended for publication. I knew Johnson's name because of Jesus' Son and nothing else, but bought this on a whim shortly after it was published. It certainly made me want to read more of his stuff. He has that spare, conversational way of writing that still manages to sound like poetry and fools you into thinking...👇

The_Penniless_Author ...that anyone could do it (until you give it a try and realize just how difficult it is). 3y

The first and last stories in this collection were impressive and surprising, but the three middle ones were just good. I‘d definitely recommend Jesus‘ Son over this collection. However, if you‘re a short story lover like me, then this is a worthy read. 4⭐️

#nutsinmay print book 1/4 @Andrew65

Andrew65 Well done 👏👏👏 4y
8little_paws oh yeah! This was a sleeper hit IMO. The first story, wow. I kept picturing Don Draper in it. 4y
8little_paws I loved this quote from it :This morning I was assailed by such sadness at the velocity of life—the distance I‘ve traveled from my own youth, the persistence of the old regrets, the new regrets, the ability of failure to freshen itself in novel forms—that I almost crashed the car. 4y
Megabooks @8little_paws And I loved the last story equally, the poet obsessed with Elvis. He writes about death and the frank conditions at the end of life so well. Great quote. 4y
Megabooks @Andrew65 thank you! 4y

This dude writing about death. This made me talk out loud. To the book. "Christ, that's morbid." And it is. But true at the same time. This book is really good but it's pretty dark.

I have read and loved this book, but I had to get this edition as well because the cover is 🔥🔥🔥. And it‘s on the inside covers too! (I once asked the editor of a famous magazine that published Johnson‘s stories what it was like to edit his work, and she said, “Oh, honey. No one *edits* Denis Johnson.”)📚❤️📚

This is my first Denis Johnson and I‘m guessing this may not be the best place to start. There is some undeniably gorgeous writing here, but I had a hard time caring about any of it. Somehow it felt as though there was a wall between these characters and me.

Unpopular opinion: The writing was good but I just found myself bored and not connecting with/caring for the characters.

Another attempt at reading short stories, which apparently isn‘t for me.

ErickaS_Flyleafunfurled I think short stories aren‘t my jam either (unless it‘s Ray Bradbury 😁). I keep trying and keep having the same opinion. 5y

The Largesse of the Sea Maiden is a collection of meditative stories. Each is an examination of mortality and fate, that questions what we do with our lives, and how does our use of this time matter, how do our connections with others change ourselves, and can we escape our circumstantial fate? Was this collection perfectly balanced? No. Was it a wonderful reading experience? Of course. Strangler Bob was a real stand out.

This short story collection felt incredibly masculine to me. It reminded me of Richard Russo's work, though I prefer his style. Pieces of each story, an amputee's leg, an Elvis conspiracy theorist, & a phone conversation with an ex-wife, all stuck with me, but the details of the stories blend together.

“I note that I've lived longer in the past now, than I can expect to live in the future. I have more to remember than I have to look forward to.”

⭐️⭐️1/2

Objectively, I can see this is quite "literary" and original writing. There are great lines of dialog, a thoughtful contemplation of mortality. But it was like a literary version of jazz, all weird dissonances and long improvised rifts taking us miles from the original path. I might have enjoyed that eclectic style if I could have rustled up some bond with just one of Johnson's characters but curiously I felt quite removed from them all.

Redheadrambles #readharder2018 Published posthumously 6y
ClairesReads Oh dear I‘m a bit nervous about this too 6y
Redheadrambles @ClairesReads I don‘t know .... I feel you might be more generous and that it might be better approached as read in a few sittings knowing it‘s going to be sort of eclectic. I thought it was going to be different somehow... 6y

Redwritinghood @Redheadrambles @ClairesReads I really liked it. Johnson‘s writing style can feel a bit rapid-fire, but there is a lot of emotion underneath. 6y

I find it much easier to review books that I don‘t love, but I‘ll give this a shot because it‘s worthy of praise. This is an exceptional story collection. I felt like I was unraveling some ancient mystery as I read this, but now that I‘m done, I realize I only uncovered more of the unexplained. Superb writing, some of the best dialogue I‘ve ever read, bizarrely engrossing storytelling, totally unpredictable. In short: so, so stinking good!
