This book presents a different Chinese immigration story than the one I‘ve read more often. It follows the daughters of families that live in multi-family hovels and finally reach middle class houses. The book focuses on intra-family dynamics and occasionally wanted and unwanted friendships.

How I loved this historical fiction collection of #shortstories!

The author researched the lives of women peripheral to famous people like Dolly Wilde, Oscar‘s neice, Edna St Vincent Millay‘s sister, Norma, and the world‘s fastest woman, Joe. The collection made me want to read the author‘s source material to understand more about these fascinating women. 4.5⭐️ #yearofshortstories

Unlike his previous collection, Jesus‘ Son, this set of stories didn‘t demand to be read. In fact, I fell asleep reading three of them. Strangler Bob and The Starlight on Idaho were winners, though. Extremely short (4-5 page) YA stories from a variety of points of view covering many teen situations. The writing, from an author who usually writes poetry, is good enough to enthrall adults. A lucky find from #bookoutlet 😃 4⭐️

Wow. The most amazing thing about these women-centered stories is that the women (or girls) are not attacking each other.

The author explores what it‘s like to be in junior high & what it‘s like to be single in your late 20s. Stand-out stories include The Holographic Soul, about a wife, husband, & 2 tween sisters that believe in telepathy (trust me), and the title story that slams down more in two pages than other collections do in 20. 5⭐️

I enjoyed this look at life in the Michigan penal system. The author is a convicted murderer who received his MFA before his crime. It‘s a good collection, but lacks the layering and twists that I love in short stories. They‘re a bit too straightforward. #yearofshortstories
