As a new century approaches, Edinburgh is a city divided. The wealthy residents of New Town live in comfort, while Old Town's cobblestone streets are clotted with criminals, prostitution, and poverty. Detective Inspector Ian Hamilton is no stranger to Edinburgh's darkest crimes. Scarred by the mysterious fire that killed his parents, he faces his toughest case yet when a young man is found strangled in Holyrood Park. With little evidence aside from a strange playing card found on the body, Hamilton engages the help of his aunt, a gifted photographer, and George Pearson, a librarian with a shared interest in the criminal mind. But the body count is rising. As newspapers spin tales of the "Holyrood Strangler," panic sets in across the city. And with each victim, the murderer is getting closer to Hamilton, the one man who dares to stop him.

First book in the trilogy of Ian Hamilton Mysteries. Set in 1881. I really enjoyed this historical mystery, a murder occurred and the body is found with an object, the murderer signature? It seems it is because other bodies are found with similar clue. This peculiar inspector, Ian Hamilton, will investigate these cases. Peculiar because his conversations/expressions are full of Shakespearean quotes. Love those parts.⬇️

Gissy (Cont.)...There are some funny parts, some murders are dark and there is a touch of family drama. I definitely will continue with this trilogy. 3.8⭐️

This book has all the elements of a great mystery...the author throws you off track and leads you to believe multiple other characters may be the killer before you find out who it really is. I love Detective Inspector Ian Hamilton as a character. I had a bit of a hard time understanding the Scottish and English slang at some points.

“He stroked the cat‘s head absently, and the animal reached a paw up to his face, running it lightly over his cheek. Ian burned with shame and regret. Why was it so much easier to befriend a stray cat than to be kind to his own brother?”

We don‘t deserve cats 😭💕

“He went to bed at night hugging his anger, holding it close as a lover. He feared if he let go of it, he would have nothing. He knew he was holding on to his pain, worrying it as one might pick at a scab, but it gave him a perverse sense of comfort.”

Detectives named Ian. I always end up wanting to give them a hug & make them a cup of tea. Edinburgh comes across as more character than just setting. Has me longing to go back. As to Goodreads review about Sex & Violence; 'Bosh and Bumkum' as Ian's boss would say. Murder mystery, yes there is a bit of violence. Nothing so graphic, that it bothered me to read it before bed. Sex? Barely any & mostly implied. Definitely read next in series.🤓

"Like many great cities, Edinburgh had a variety of moods. It could be warm and welcoming, in the boisterous, dangerous way of Scottish cities, sly and beckoning as a sloe- eyed whore, or grim and foreboding." Loving descriptions of city. Only had a day there. Himself had been graciously following me around Jane Austen's England; let him pick what to do. He picked Castle & Royal Mile.Would love to go back & settle in for awhile. So much to see. ?

Honestly I'm reading this because someone on Goodreads gave it 1Star Review instead of Shelving it as DNF. Don't know how to make a dedicated DNF shelf? Delete book and move on. It's not fair to give a bad review just because it's not 'Cozy' mystery you prefer. While they didn't actually finish the book; they did count all the Swear words they came across. 🤪

rubyslippersreads I read this review. I can understand briefly stating that the book is not for you because of language, violence, etc., because some people want that warning, but listing it all is ridiculous and seems rather vindictive. 😏 5y
Crinoline_Laphroaig @rubyslippersreads That's what got me. There's a big difference between 'It's not for me' and disparaging. 5y
Literary_Siren Now I‘m going to read it! 5y

Introducing a character I can appreciate, Bacchus the cat.

Reggie There‘s this zombie book called The Complex where in the middle of all the action you get a chapter that is a point of view from a cat. And it‘s pretty cool. Lol I‘m not a cat person but it made me think of them a little more. 5y

I‘ve started reading this freebie Kindle book and really enjoying it. It has a very poor review percentage here on Litsy but 4-1/2 stars on Amazon. Hmmm. I‘m six chapters in and definitely liking the writing and characters especially the detective‘s elderly aunt. But I have to wonder...what kind of bird/animal is in the tree on this cover?

BookwormAHN I think its a badly drawn raven. 5y
GingerAntics A cat and a raven had a baby, and that's it. 5y
Texreader @BookwormAHN I am sure you‘re correct but I have to agree that @GingerAntics has rather aptly described what I was thinking... cat? bird? Catbird? (edited) 5y

For the record, I thought this was really good. Definitely macabre and atmospheric. But it kept me guessing until the very end, and I developed a soft spot for the lead detective. I know there is more to this series, so if I get through what I have (😂😂), I will look into more. #recentlyread #nospoilers #mysterylover #macabrestories #historicfiction 🖤

Listening to this Victorian mystery set in Edinburgh. The narrator is a bit grating — his phrasing is rather choppy.

jpmcwisemorgan How is the story? It‘s available on Kindle Unlimited and I‘ve thought about reading it. 6y
Heideschrampf @scripturient that might be something for us ;) 6y
BookishMarginalia @jpmcwisemorgan It‘s pretty interesting so far, with a good setting and cast of characters, though I could do without the parts from the killer‘s perspective (but these are just snippets and not particularly fleshed out, so they don‘t really detract). 6y
bookandcat Ooh I hate when I get an awkward audio narrator. That's usually when I crank up the listening speed to move it along faster 😂😂 story sounds interesting! 6y

Mehso-so

If you like historical fiction novels, or Victorian-lite novels, then this one might be for you. There are some slow spots that take some time get through- mostly building backstory. All in all, it's a pretty good read with some interesting and quirky characters.

"When Ian crawled into bed, the cat snuggled up against him, purring loudly, one paw thrown over his arm. The cat‘s eyes were half-closed, the expression on its face as close to pure contentment as Ian had ever seen. Why was it so easy for a dumb animal to find peace and happiness in this world, while human beings created wars so they could hack at one another, spending untold hours thinking up new ways to inflict harm?" #amreading #mystery

loved everything about it , the characters , the story line, the touch of Gothic to it, how it pulled me in to the story from the every start . And how the main character remind me in some ways of Sherlock Homes . What a really great start to a new series ,can't wait to read more of this series. With that said I would love to give a big thinks to NetGalley
