Loved A Day of Fallen Night ❤️
The Patriarchs was very informative and interesting.
Birnham Wood - I bailed.
The Bandit Queens- just about a pick- loved the humour and women just thought it got a bit samey.
Just started The King‘s Jewel and enjoying being back in the 11th Century 😁

paper.reveries Some gorgeous covers, wow! 11mo
Cinfhen Wow….a bail on Birnam Wood and just a so-so on BQ - you really are a #RebelReader 😘🙌🏻 11mo
TrishB @daisyheadmaesie they are 😁 11mo
TrishB @Cinfhen lol!! A disappointed one! 11mo

So I‘ve finished the shortlist….sort of 🙈I‘ve read 14, skipped 1 ( The Passenger) and bailed on 3!!!
From the 14 my favs are Babel, Dinosaur & Rabbit Hutch but honestly none of these books would make my yearly best list. I enjoyed other books on the long list MUCH MORE. Overall a disappointing rooster but I look forward to chatting with the tournament crew.

Megabooks Yay!! Great job C!! I just finished up this weekend too. I need to make a wrap up post. 14mo
Ruthiella Well done! 👏👏👏 14mo

jlhammar Wow, impressive! 14mo
squirrelbrain Great overview! I‘ll hopefully get to my last 2 soon and then I‘ll post mine… I agree, though, not many would make my best-of lists. 14mo
Cinfhen I still have a bunch from the long list that I haven‘t read @squirrelbrain @jlhammar @Ruthiella @Megabooks but I probably won‘t attempt them. Thanks for the positive vibes xxx (edited) 14mo
BarbaraBB Great overview! 14mo
ImperfectCJ Nice wrap-up. I've been thinking of bailing on Seven Moons (the style is just not working for me), and knowing you dnfed it helps me feel less bad about contemplating setting it aside. I hate to end my shortlist reading with a bail, but it might come to that. 14mo
Chelsea.Poole Good job! I still have 7 to go! 😬 I can‘t imagine I‘ll make it. Probably skipping moons and on the fence about The Passenger 14mo
merelybookish Amazing! I have read 9 and plan to read 2-3 more. No way I'll read them all. 14mo
Hooked_on_books My favorites are definitely different from yours, but I agree about this being a lackluster rooster year! 14mo
sarahbarnes Nice work! I like your best of list, as it were. I agree that I would‘ve preferred a few off the longlist to be in the mix instead. Oh well, it will be fun! 14mo
Cinfhen I LOVE your outlook @BkClubCare !!! I just feel life is short and there are plenty of books I WANT to read…. Im not gonna waste my time reading a book Im really not enjoying or struggling with @ImperfectCJ its not a job… I‘m #AllHailTheBail 🙌🏻❤️ 14mo
Cinfhen Im curious to see what the panel makes of these books @Chelsea.Poole @merelybookish @Hooked_on_books @sarahbarnes but I will say I‘m shocked to see a YA fantasy on my personal favorite list! This tournament does open my eyes to new authors and books I might not have chosen to read, so that‘s definitely a win 🏆 14mo
BarbaraBB With Babel among your favorites it‘s about time you start reading Harry Potter 😀 (if I remember well that you didn‘t yet 😉) 14mo
Cinfhen You‘re right @BarbaraBB 🙈 I‘ve tried and I just can‘t get into it!!! It‘s my #LiterarySecret 14mo
BarbaraBB Haha! I love that you didn‘t follow the crowd 💪🏽🧙‍♀️ 14mo
Cinfhen I‘m just a #RebelReader @BarbaraBB ☺️😘 14mo
batsy Super impressive! I'm in the midst of Babel now and liking it! Haven't read the other two of your faves 🙈 14mo
Cinfhen Hopefully you‘ll get to them soon @batsy 😁 14mo
sarahbarnes I‘m in the midst of Babel right now and liking it too @batsy @barbarabb. And I haven‘t read Harry Potter either! 🤫 14mo
Cinfhen Woohoo 🥳 I‘m no longer the ONLY one to never read HP @sarahbarnes I feel so much better 😂 14mo

Banned Books Week! And my selection was the top challenged book of 2021 🤬. Including a whole diatribe and campaign against this book by my state‘s LT Gov (who sits on NC‘s State Board of Education)

I am grateful to Maia‘s courage to publish this memoir, and I have seen first hand it‘s impact on non-binary genderqueer and exploring teens in my kid‘s friend group. This is MJ‘s favorite book of the year, and I can see why. It also provides ⬇️⬇️

alisiakae So much helpful information and perspective to cisgender parents & others who may be trying to understand what it FEELS like to be non-binary and/or gender queer. Maia explains eir experiences in a way that I think would help a lot of people better understand how gender is not binary. (edited) 2y
alisiakae #bbrc #bannedorchallenged @LibrarianRyan I‘ve filled the #bookex2022 #comingoutstory prompt already but this would be a great option for that prompt also! @Cinfhen @BarbaraTheBibliophage 2y
LibrarianRyan I love this book. I thought it was so well done. 2y

alisiakae @LibrarianRyan SO well done! And I loved the books included and mentioned! Added some of those to my TBR. Especially this one 2y
Cinfhen Great review!! I‘ve heard WONDERFUL things about this book!!! 2y
alisiakae @Cinfhen thank you!! So my brave child spoke out with me a few months ago about a town commissioner who compared queer people to pedophiles and predators. Her statement was never aired (part of mine was), but in July she read this book right in front of him at one of my meetings. 😂😂 https://www.wccbcharlotte.com/2022/03/31/huntersville-politicians-get-into-socia... 2y
Cinfhen #RebelReader #Warrior way to go Alisia & props to M!!! 🙌🏻 2y
Kerrbearlib This was just banned from a high school library in my state. 😡 2y

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Spiegelman‘s second volume focuses on his father Vladek‘s time in the camps. It‘s a brutal read, and as with volume one, we also glimpse the aftereffects. Surviving is a lifelong challenge. I can‘t stress enough how essential these books are to better understanding what so many innocent people experienced. It‘s within the pages of banned and challenged books, that empathy flourishes.

tjwill Well said! I completely agree. 2y

mrp27 I first read these in college, back in the early 90‘s, and this is what got me started on graphic novels. Showed me how powerful the gn could be in story telling. 2y
britt_brooke @mrp27 What an amazing introduction into graphic novels! 2y

britt_brooke @Cinfhen OMG and WTF. This teacher should be fired. On top of that, there should not be bible classes in public schools. Private schools can do what they want, but it‘s not appropriate in public schools. Tennessee is embarrassing. 2y
Cinfhen Scary! I agree, Bible class doesn‘t belong in public schools. I‘m sure the Bible teacher isn‘t even accredited or licensed 2y

A harrowing memoir of all the complexities of escaping an authoritarian regime for another. And persistently pursuing a more complete defection and freedom. Lee‘s story is well-told and propulsive. Every time I thought she was settled in, there was a gut punch and a “plot twist.” Inspired by her resilience.

Librarybelle This does indeed sound harrowing! 2y
alysonimagines I‘ve read this and can attest it is both harrowing and riveting, just as you described. What the author had to go through was a severe test of her resilience. 2y
BarbaraBB You are steady reading your way through Asia 🤍! 2y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @BarbaraBB I am … just got Iran, North Korea, and Syria ✔️ off my list! Still super behind and need a break from authoritarian regimes for a bit. 2y
BarbaraBB Haha yes that can get too much 😉 2y

I have to admit part of why I celebrate #BannedBooksWeek is that it makes me feel like a Rebellious Teenager again sneaking books past my mother.

But having grown up in home that thought the only thing you needed to read was the Bible and religious literature I know the importance of Books to open your mind to new ideas and other people's stories.

BarbaraTheBibliophage @Cinfhen I was - #rebelreader! I‘m trying to focus now so there‘s no #decemberrush for my challenges. 🤓 3y
Crazeedi @BarbaraTheBibliophage I have a question, each quarter doesn't have to be completely filled out? For example I did read all of winter prompts, but I read a couple from other seasons, and yes I marked them on my form. So you dont have to have every season completed to enter form? 3y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @Crazeedi You are correct. We split the prompts into seasons but there is no requirement to actually read them in order of season. We‘re more relaxed than that! 🤓 3y

And starting off this years #Booked2021 is the above tagged book. I‘m sorry @Cinfhen @4thhouseontheleft @BarbaraTheBibliophage I‘ve started on Autumn 😬 But I accidentally found this book on Litsy and it doesn‘t have any ratings yet (literally underrated!). It caught my eye as it is based in the town I moved from in March. So far I am enjoying the story and the fact I know so well the destination. #hiddengem

BarbaraTheBibliophage It is definitely okay to be a #rebelreader and choose prompts out of season! ♥️📚 3y
