This is SO twisty! Really kept me guessing, made me exclaim out loud on three occasions, made me SOB (I'm a bit emotional at the moment in fairness) so so very good. Been spoilt with my last two reads! If you read it and don't absolutely just fall in love with the adorable Murray then we can't be friends

I found this novel a bit of a slow burner; I wasn‘t so hooked that I had to read on until the last few chapters. However, the final twists and turns and the emotional connection I felt with the detective, Murray, meant that I really did enjoy the story overall.

Stayed up late to finish listening to this one. I expected the twists and turns but wasn‘t expecting the one at the very end! I really liked Murray and his wife and am glad Mackintosh developed those characters. Overall, I really enjoyed this book.

The twists! The turns! This book had some tricks up its sleeve! The plot got a little fantastic at times, but overall a good read.

I just loved the detective and his relationship with his wife. All the relationships were well done. It is a rare occasion when a thriller (or really just about any book, to be honest) handles mental illness thoughtfully and intelligently, but this one did, in several instances.

I am so over the unreliable narrator genre - I think it‘s the literary world‘s new Macarena or Gangnam style. That wouldn‘t be so bad but the author just seems to repeat the same stuff over and over with not much substance. Some of the subplots injected some interest, and I have to give credit for the unexpected twists and turns (some bordering on unbelievably so). I give this 3 ⭐️⭐️⭐️ but I‘m not sure I‘ll read any of her other future books.

I‘m somewhat disappointed with this as I‘ve enjoyed her debut & her 2nd book wasn‘t too bad. Admittedly Mackintosh has the ability to spin crazy plot twists, this one is of no exception. I counted, 4 plot twists! The mystery is intriguing, the pacing suspenseful, but I had problems with bits of the story. I liked the side story of retired Detective Murray and his relationship with his wife. This bit saves the book. Overall alright, didn‘t wow me.

I am a tad torn on this one. I loved all of the characters, who were very well fleshed out. However for me the story went from well constructed to interesting twist to full on melodrama which left me a little cold. That said I have really enjoyed all Clare Mackintosh‘ books and I would always recommend to anyone who likes a well structured, well written thriller

Oooo, a colleague put me onto this series where a different crime fiction author takes novelist Simon Toyne through a true crime that inspired them. Simon then tries to solve the case. The first episode was about a double murder in Ireland and was presented by Claire Mackintosh.

Sadly disappointed with this one especially since I loved her other books. The book went from 'good start' to 'meh' to 'cliche' to 'ooh, nice twist' to 'ooh, another twist' to 'sad' to 'what the??' at the end.

So... has this ever happened to you? While browsing the New Release shelf at the library today, I was surprised to see a new Clare Mackintosh. Score! I didn‘t even know one was coming out! So I borrowed it, got home, and dove in... to discover on page 7 that no, I‘ve totally read this story before. Turns out I read it 6 months ago! I swear, the cover did not even look familiar. 🤷🏻‍♀️I blame it on all of her titles sounding so similar. 😋

LiteraryinLititz How long are books usually considered New Releases, also? 7mo

Wow Clare Mackintosh is the absolute queen of a plot twist! I have loved every one of her books and this is definitely no exception. I was glued to it throughout and despite having a bit of a flare for guessing a twist before it happens (the curse of reading far too many thrillers) I am caught out every time with Clare Mackintosh‘s writing, I never see it coming! Highly recommend!

MinDea @julesG a friend of mine sent it to us as a gift. Annabelle's pet toys on Etsy sells them basically they are a puzzle game for the dog. They forage for the food and it makes them physically work and mentally work to get their food. Burley seems to really like it! 11mo

Oh this book. ?

There were a lot of the reviews comparing this it to her previously published books (which I haven't read but am starting now) and I still thought this was a great book with a twist I never saw coming.

There was a lot of out burst from me which made me love it even more, "you fucking what?!" "You bitch!" "?!!!??" followed by me going to the library to read any other published books by her. ?❤️

Rating 10/10 ?

I will read anything Clare Mackintosh writes! I finished this last night and woke up thinking about it. She writes the most unexpected plot twists and I‘ve yet to predict one. Hers are the kind of books you go back and reread to figure out just how she did it. Having said that, this one wasn‘t her best, but still a solid psychological thriller. If you read the book please help me out...I have some spoiler-y questions below 👇🏻 #summerreading2018

Bookworm83 I‘m so confused on the ending?? The book made it pretty clear that her mother jumped, but what Anna relaxers that she didn‘t (???) say what??? 12mo
MelissaSue81 It‘s been a few months since I read it, but The ending was another note that said “suicide, think again.” Right? I got the idea that (forget the goddaughters name) pushed her. And that Anna had already known it. I could be wrong? 12mo
Bookworm83 @MelissaSue81 Yes, that‘s the correct ending. I went back and read the scene where the mom died and the goddaughter (Laura) was across the room pointing a gun, so she couldn‘t have pushed her. As the police burst in though, there was a loud sound, so I‘m now thinking that Laura must have shot the mother and she fell off the balcony. Wouldn‘t an autopsy have shown that though? Grrr....this ending is killing me! Thanks so much for your help! 12mo

I was pulled into the story early on and was eager to continue reading to see what would happen next. I think this is because I was drawn towards some of the characters than I was to the intended plot and storyline and trying to figure out what what would happen next. To me, there were too many twists and turns, and many that were unnecessary and distracting. I enjoyed the writing style, the character development, and the psychological topics.

Loved it! This is Claire Mackintosh's newest psychological thriller. Set around the Christmas holidays, new mother Anna searches for answers surrounding the suicides of both of her parents. Her mother committed suicide a year ago and her father 7 months before her mother. I really thought that I had it figured out but I was very wrong; which is good thing, I like to be surprised more than I like to be right. Great read!
