Crash Override
Crash Override: How Gamergate (Nearly) Destroyed My Life, and How We Can Win the Fight Against Online Hate | Zoe Quinn
59 posts | 23 read | 58 to read
You've heard the stories about the dark side of the internet--hackers, #gamergate, anonymous mobs attacking an unlucky victim, and revenge porn--but they remain just that: stories. Surely these things would never happen to you. Zoe Quinn used to feel the same way. She is a video game developer whose ex-boyfriend published a crazed blog post cobbled together from private information, half-truths, and outright fictions, along with a rallying cry to the online hordes to go after her. They answered in the form of a so-called movement known as #gamergate--they hacked her accounts; stole nude photos of her; harassed her family, friends, and colleagues; and threatened to rape and murder her. But instead of shrinking into silence as the online mobs wanted her to, she raised her voice and spoke out against this vicious online culture and for making the internet a safer place for everyone. In the years since #gamergate, Quinn has helped thousands of people with her advocacy and online-abuse crisis resource Crash Override Network. From locking down victims' personal accounts to working with tech companies and lawmakers to inform policy, she has firsthand knowledge about every angle of online abuse, what powerful institutions are (and aren't) doing about it, and how we can protect our digital spaces and selves. Crash Override offers an up-close look inside the controversy, threats, and social and cultural battles that started in the far corners of the internet and have since permeated our online lives. Through her story--as target and as activist--Quinn provides a human look at the ways the internet impacts our lives and culture, along with practical advice for keeping yourself and others safe online.

Starting with her story of online harassment from an abusive ex- that ballooned into Gamergate, her personal journey leads all the way to the UN, with stops at the Hugo‘s Rabid Puppies, and how some of those nastiest voices ended up in the current White House. She explains how the online “inquisitors” pick “witches” to burn, how the behavior can be tied into abusive relationship dynamics, how to secure your online life, and about moving on after.

gradcat This is incredible! I‘m embarrassed to say that I didn‘t know anything about this, this specific case, that is. Of course, I do know about online harassment, but I didn‘t realize how far it could go. I‘m so glad you posted this—I‘ve now stacked it & hope to get to it soon. Thanks! 📚👍♥️ 4y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @gradcat You are very welcome, I had heard the name Gamergate, but knew almost none of the details myself before reading this...I hope you find it informative too. 4y

This book is so eye opening...honestly it makes me think I should delete all social media (except Litsy, please don‘t ever turn on us Litsy). And honestly, that wouldn‘t even really help much. 😱🤯

Karkar It is really scary how much people put on social media. You can find out so much about them and they never even think about it. 4y
Hooked_on_books I wish right now there wasn‘t so much misinformation out there, as it‘s so dangerous. But I realize with social media and the stance the companies have chosen to take, that decreasing the misinformation is essentially impossible. 4y

Doing some Litsy catch-up, starting with Zoe Quinn's 'Crash Override', a great but short look into her Gamergate experience, what she learned from it, and how she's helping others.

"...you fundamentally cannot shame someone who is proud of what they are doing." Quinn talking about Breitbart's "reporters" and their attacks on her. A great way to explain what's going on in the US lately in politics.

#FierceFeb #NoOnesLittleGirl Zoe Quinn, an indie game developer, proved she was no one's little girl when her ex started & encouraged a massive online harassment campaign designed to destroy her. She weathered the terrifying storm & this book is a mix of memoir & primer of how to protect yourself from online abuse. An absorbing, often frightening & infuriating read. Even if you aren't a gamer there are lessons to be learned for anyone online.😱📚

batsy Oh yes, I heard about this! Great pick. Sounds like a timely and necessary read. 6y

Still trying to knock a cold 🤧out of my system so lots of sleeping today & a bit of reading in between naps. Well in between my naps... Max 🐱on the other hand eats (or naps some more) in between his naps.😹🤣 😼He says that he doesn't know why his mom is so fascinated by this book since there's no cats in it & it is about computer stuff, but he'll just let her read away while he gets his beauty sleep... #catsoflitsy 😽❤️

It's my first avocado toast of 2018! 🎉🥑🍞Something my coffeeshop baristas tried to commemorate with spicy garlic-aioli. They get points for creativity & trying--maybe not so much on execution.😆 I got intrigued reading the description of this book when it was a recent Kindle deal but striving to buy fewer books, including e-books, I checked my library Overdrive & the e-book was available. I'm trying it out this morning before getting work done.

This book. THIS BOOK. I can only hope to live up to what Zoe Quinn lays out for us as a better internet world. They are a great example of embracing your imperfect self and using that to do Good. The BIG kind of Good. Consider me part of Crash Override.

cathysaid Do you think this would be interesting even if I'm not a gamer? 7y
Ekkross @cathysaid absolutely! Anyone who uses the Internet at all will find something of interest. There's actually not that much about gaming in it 7y

I can't even put into words how I feel about this book. It is eye opening and truly breaks down how online abuse and bullying (to put it nicely) work and spread. It also breaks down how we in the general population can help break the chain once it's started. Perfect for the environment we find ourselves in.

Guys, this book is amazing. Even if you aren't a gamer or familiar with the whole gamergate saga you still should read this book. I am only 65 pages in and can't put it down. It is eye opening to just how easily online hate and vitriol can be spread. Read this book.

A fantastic read that emphasizes the importance of hope and perserverance while never sugar-coating the scope or intensity of the problems being combated. Also a valuable tool for personal use, be it shoring up your own online defenses, dealing with breaches and attacks, and helping others/seeking help. Wonderfully written and unfortunately essential.

Not quite what I expected, actually a lot more. Quinn moves through a quick memoir in order to center herself into the reality of what the book is actually about - widespread abuse on the internet, how to be a good digital citizen, and genuinely practical advice not just on digital hygiene but also on being better humans (often with the kind of droll humor that gets right to my heart #butts). An important book on its own terms not as a GG story.

Maybe I shouldn't be left alone on Saturdays... Went to the library to return a book and left with two. Went to the store for odds and ends ended up buying the socks because who can say no to Star Wars socks?

I am the first person to take out Crash Override. It hadn't even been put on the shelf yet. Asked if I could request it when it came in and the librarian said "I think it just came in." and got it for me. #score #libraryhaul #bookhaul

Quinn is clearly uncomfortable with memoir, so a couple early chapters on growing up felt rushed, but other than that, I found CRASH OVERRIDE to be an invaluable book. Like a more personal take on SO YOU'VE BEEN PUBLICLY SHAMED, Quinn walks us through the mechanics of mob abuse. But she's an insider in this world, and her suggested solutions are smart and compassionate. A fantastic read for anyone seeking to become a good digital citizen.
