Jane Austen at Home
Jane Austen at Home | Lucy Worsley
'This is my kind of history: carefully researched but so vivid that you are convinced Lucy Worsley was actually there at the party - or the parsonage.' Antonia Fraser On the 200th anniversary of Jane Austen's death, historian Lucy Worsley leads us into the world in which our best-loved novelist lived. This new telling of the story of Jane's life shows us how and why she lived as she did, examining the rooms, spaces and possessions which mattered to her, and the way in which home is used in her novels to mean both a place of pleasure and a prison. It wasn't all country houses and ballrooms, in fact her life was often a painful struggle. Jane famously lived a 'life without incident', but with new research and insights Lucy Worsley reveals a passionate woman who fought for her freedom. A woman who far from being a lonely spinster in fact had at least five marriage prospects, but who in the end refused to settle for anything less than Mr Darcy.

Today‘s Plans:
— Read
— Watch Love Actually (I have never seen it 🤦‍♀️)
— Nap
— Think about going out to dinner and debate if changing out of pjs and brushing hair will be worth it
— Realize it won‘t be, order in
— Buy a snazzy planner that I‘ll only use for the first couple of weeks of January
— Use my mind powers to try and will @Liberty to begin tweeting about her favorite books of 2018
— Secretly make nachos so I don‘t have to share

Charlotte Brontë wrote of Jane Austen "I should hardly like to live with her ladies and gentlemen in their elegant but confined houses.‘ She concludes her demolition job with ‘these observations will probably irritate‘. Yes, Charlotte Brontë, they do irritate, as you could hardly have written Jane Eyre unless Jane Austen had previously constructed something worthy of demolition." ? #forshamecharlotte #mostdisagreeable #austeninaugust

Jane Austen has been a part of my life since I was a lonely sixteen year old girl at the mercy of dysfunctional parents. I've stood at her grave in Winchester Cathedral and thanked her for helping me through that time in my life. Elizabeth Bennett inspired me to rebel and be an Obstinate Headstrong Girl. l know Jane Austen's story; but listening to it, especially the ending, gave me all the feels. It made me love her even more. #austeninaugust

A lovely, meticulously-constructed biography of Jane Austen that uses the location and atmosphere of Austen‘s homes - from Steventon, to Bath, Lyme, Godmersham, Southampton, Chawton, London, and finally Winchester - as a jumping off point to examine how these physical places tell us about Austen‘s life. Worsley also examines how the single women of the Austen family and their friends/ relations stuck together to create a found family of their own.

LeahBergen I so enjoyed this one. 11mo

Lovely bookmarks, a gorgeous pin (pink happens to be my favorite color), a coloring book, and several cards that are pretty enough to be framed. The P&P notebook is adorable; that's my favorite cover. ⬇️

Recommended for those interested Austen's life or the lives of Georgian- and Regency-era women. The organization of the book by the homes that Austen lived in seemed a bit contrived — it's just chronological order by another name, right? — but it's a contrivance I buy into. Home is certainly a theme in Austen's work, so the closer look at her own precious and precarious home life provides a meaningful framework here.

I didn‘t finish this last night, but I finished it his afternoon! Worsley is fantastic, looking at how Austen lived to gain more clues about Austen‘s life. She doesn‘t always have kind things to say about the Austen family and the Leigh family, especially when it comes to covering up Jane‘s legacy. But, the writing style is like talking with your BFF...it‘s informative with a touch of sarcasm. Janeites - read this!!

brennahawleycraig It‘s on my wish list so I will definitely need to move that up! 1y

Litsy is back!!!! It‘s kind of like the Internet...it goes out, and you think you can handle it, but then you realize that so much you do is attached to it. I had withdraw from it, which just goes to show how much I appreciate this community. Oh well...crisis has passed.

In honor of Jane Austen‘s birthday, I picked this up again. I adore Worsley‘s writing!

BekaReid I have to read this one. I really enjoyed Lucy Worsley's The Art of the English Murder and am a huge Jane Austen fan! 1y

Thanks for the tag @Abailliekaras for the #giftswapsurvey !

1. Eclectic. I read just about anything, though my go to genres are mystery and historical fiction.
2. Jane Austen - so little is known about her IRL, but I love her wittiness. I admire her.
3. Not a sci-fi fan, and I‘m picky with fantasy. Sorry, I‘ll never read LOTR!
4. I‘m reading a little more fantasy of late
5. The Hobbit...sorry! I just don‘t like Tolkien‘s writing.
6. Join in!

merelybookish I will never read LOTR either. 😉 1y

I love watching Lucy Worsley programs on TV because I'm a history buff. She's my hero due to her knowledge and sense of humor. This the first book of hers I've read and, so far, I am enjoying it immensely. Very detailed. She really transports you back to late 18th century England.

A little late for a #cliche quote, but just stumbled upon this this morning. #quotsynov17

I adore the cover of this! It really does remind me of Austen. The posted image is one from the Internet...I'd snap a picture of mine, but it's upstairs, and I'm currently downstairs being a cat couch. At least I have my iPad to continue reading Outlander. #coverlovers #awesomeautumnbooks

Today is a #Freespace for @jenniferw88 's #AwesomeAusten challenge, so I'm going with some books ABOUT Austen. I may have a problem. 😉

saresmoore I've tried and I simply can't conceive of a single perspective from which this stack of books would indicate a problem! 😍 2y
batsy Oooh. Definitely not a problem! The bio at the bottom of the stack looks especially good, along with the Claire Harman book. 2y

I was in heaven, hearing this whole book spoken in Lucy's voice while reading--a wonderful, well-researched book about Jane's homes through her life. But also about the other people she loved with in those places. Lucy gives Jane's history a slightly feminist view as well, which is natural and delightful. I highly recommend this for all Jane devotees. And double good if you're a Lucy fan. (Watch her accompanying show, too!)

"Miss Austen's merits have long been established beyond question; she is, emphatically, the novelist of home"
-Richard Bentley publishing Jane Austen's novels in 1833

The introduction on the importance of a home to Jane Austen was poignant and already hooking my interest in this biography.

#TBRtemptation post 7! Released in May. On the 200th anniversary of Austen's death, Worsley applies a new angle, providing a biography of the iconic author by way of her residence. Austen was far from a lonely spinster, having had many proposals. The rooms in which she lived and wrote reveal the real struggles for freedom she fought for beyond the fancy balls and country houses. #blameLitsy #blameMrBook 😎

Birdsong28 I can't be tempted on this one this time as I have already got it as it came out in the uk on the 18th may and I got it a week early thanks to pre-ordering on #Waterstones. 📖📚 2y

I am loving Lucy's gorgeous writing--I hear her voice so sweetly talking about Jane Austen! She's a fan girl and I'm a double fan girl-Jane and Lucy! ❤️ Such a fun, wonderful read!

Birdsong28 Lucy writes as if she is chatting to you rather than telling you, such an informal style 📖📚 2y
