Jane Austen at Home
Jane Austen at Home | Lucy Worsley
'This is my kind of history: carefully researched but so vivid that you are convinced Lucy Worsley was actually there at the party - or the parsonage.' Antonia Fraser On the 200th anniversary of Jane Austen's death, historian Lucy Worsley leads us into the world in which our best-loved novelist lived. This new telling of the story of Jane's life shows us how and why she lived as she did, examining the rooms, spaces and possessions which mattered to her, and the way in which home is used in her novels to mean both a place of pleasure and a prison. It wasn't all country houses and ballrooms, in fact her life was often a painful struggle. Jane famously lived a 'life without incident', but with new research and insights Lucy Worsley reveals a passionate woman who fought for her freedom. A woman who far from being a lonely spinster in fact had at least five marriage prospects, but who in the end refused to settle for anything less than Mr Darcy.

Clare-Dragonfly I was surprised and interested to find that Jane, as a visitor, was expected to tip the servants! 2d
Ruthiella @Clare-Dragonfly Me too! That must have been compensation for the extra work fo visitors that stayed for weeks/months. But certainly if one were on a tight budget, it would be difficult to find the money. 20h

Thanks for the tag @ravenlee ! 😊

💠 Reading the tagged book with the #Pemberlittens

💠 I have it both on audio and in ebook from the library.

💠 I think it‘s probably ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️

💠 I occasionally use the highlight function on the kindle but I don‘t write or underline in physical books. I sometimes use a sticky note when I want to keep track of a quote for later.

#ThoughtfulThursday

MoonWitch94 I‘m reading this one for #pemberlittens as well! Thanks for playing 📚☺️ 12h

Taking a (well deserved) break from mommy's duties and organising an international wedding. Yes, that's a wine glass holder 🧖🏻‍♀️ Hopefully will catch up with #Pemberlittens

It could only be better if I had a Jane Austen reading me the first epistolary version of Sense and Sensibility

Ruthiella It would be awesome to read that earlier version of S&S! 😃 2d

Trying to catch up with #PemberLittens and I‘m confused - how did a monthly magazine that ran from Jan 1789-Mar 1790 tally sixty issues?

Clare-Dragonfly Huh. If it‘s such an admirable and professional magazine, my guess would be that one of those years has a typo, but that‘s just a guess. 🤔 1w
ravenlee Ah, ok - now that I‘m less tired I was able to find the answer. The Loiterer was a WEEKLY periodical, not monthly. That makes a difference. @Clare-Dragonfly so the dates are correct. 1w

but in searching for this Jane of mine I have accidentally met a while generation of women; governesses spinsters sister in laws killed in child birth. Females who cheered Jane on in her triumphs & disasters her passage through life so smooth on the surface sharply marked by closed doors routes she could not take choices she could not make. Her Great contribution was to push those doors open a little bit for us inlater generations toslip through.

I‘m surprised Lucy had to learn from historical reenactors that swaddling is comforting and helps a baby sleep—not parents! My son was born the year after this book was published and swaddling was certainly strongly recommended without any indication that it is old-fashioned, just time-honored.

I‘m also intrigued by the idea of sending the kid out for 24/7 childcare during the toddler years 😆 #PemberLittens

I COULD NOT LOVE THIS BOOK MORE! My utter excitement and genuine fascination at learning all I could about the life of one of my most favourite authors was completely satisfied by this brilliantly researched and entertainingly written book. Lucy Worsley is simply fantastic and brought to life Jane Austen, her family and the era that she lived through just wonderfully. I LOVED THIS BOOK.
