I really enjoyed this story, but didn‘t much care for the narration. I thought it was an electronic playback, text recognition, but it says it was read by a person, also named Jeannie, with an “i”, lowercase. She sounded like a robot to me which was distracting for a bit. Interesting memoir and format.

Since I usually only take pictures of hardcovers, I wanted to show how pretty they can be on paperback as well. All of the bookmarks fit both since they‘re stretchy! Gorgeous cover already, but it‘s always nice to add a little bling. Also take custom orders.

corycatelyn That's beautiful! 6y
TommieMarie74 Gorgeous!! Does the elastic mark the edges of the paper cover at all? 6y
Bookartbookmarks @TommieMarie74 I have been using them and they have not. They aren‘t that tight. 6y

I love memoirs. Vanasco promised her father just before he died that she would write a book for him. Not only is this a story of his life, it is also Vanasco's life story as well and her battle with mental illness. I've enjoyed the hours I spent absorbed in this book.

This is a difficult book to describe. The whole thing is told in snippets of old memories of the author‘s love for her father, his losses of his daughter and his eye and his life, her grief, and then her mental health breakdown. It is told semi sequentially with breaks within the book of the author describing what she is going to doin the upcoming chapters. There is are rape and incidents of sexual assault scenes. It works and is engrossing.

Another cool night thanks to Greenlight Bookstore.

Jeannie Vanasco has a brutally honest voice- quite open with her mental health struggles. She studied poetry and fiction so I have high expectations for a lyricism she admitted she aspires to. #TBR

BarbaraTheBibliophage This was a mixed read for me. She's a talented writer, but the subject matter was a gut punch. 6y

Grief is one of the hardest things I‘ve had to navigate in my life. I am so sympathetic to the pain that Vanasco feels, and after reading this, I‘m so grateful that I had such a great support network that kept me from falling into the despair she experienced. Her pain is raw and her portrayal of her experiences is honest. If the reader can get past the author‘s disjointed writing style, there‘s a lot to be learned about mental illness and grief.

Jeannie Vanasco bares her soul in The Glass Eye: A Memoir. There were times it made me squirm with discomfort. But it also touched my heart and made me appreciate her willingness to be vulnerable. Vanasco illustrates both her writing process and her mental illness by jumping around thematically and chronologically. And yet, she finds a way to move forward in the memoir and life. Out Oct. 3

A poignant, frank memoir about loss, obsession, and mental illness exacerbated by grief as Jeannie struggles to manifest the book she promised her dad she'd write shortly before his death.

I have yet to personally experience this type of loss and it felt like I was preemptively identifying with her pain. I read it in one sitting and then promptly called my dad for a "no reason, just wanted to hear your voice" chat. Out 10/3! #litsypartyofone

swishandflick I ran out of characters, but wanted say thank you to @Tin_House for the #ARC! 7y
emtobiasz Did her dad have a glass eye? My grandfather did, and it feels like a weird thing to get sentimental about, but we definitely do. ❤️ 7y
swishandflick @emtobiasz Yes! Well, they called it his glass eye though it was actually made of plastic. She describes her dad through the metaphor of his eye throughout the book. (edited) 7y

Reading this one tonight! @Tin_House
You might find it strange, the number of grief memoirs I have read since my father's death in June, but I'm drawn to them so much right now.

saresmoore I don't think it's strange at all, actually. It's a sort of exposure therapy. 7y
ReadingEnvy @saresmoore I find it enormously comforting, and the range of feelings people write about is helpful! 7y
DebReads4fun I agree, not strange at all. 7y

andrew61 I suspect that is why people turn to the written word at those times jenny, poetry and prose can capture a feeling that individuals may struggle to express. Glad it's helping. 7y
Bren912 So totally normal. I'm so sorry for your loss--it's not easy. Everyone grieves in different ways and strangely, or not, this way seems very healing. 7y
kspenmoll I have always found such writing comforting at times of loss- has helped me process my own feelings & feel connection with others. 7y
