Intensity: A Novel | Dean Koontz
BONUS: This edition contains an excerpt from Dean Koontz's The City. #1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER Past midnight, Chyna Shepard, twenty-six, gazes out a moonlit window, unable to sleep on her first night in the Napa Valley home of her best friends family. Instinct proves reliable. A murderous sociopath, Edgler Foreman Vess, has entered the house, intent on killing everyone inside. A self-proclaimed homicidal adventurer, Vess lives only to satisfy all appetites as they arise, to immerse himself in sensation, to live without fear, remorse, or limits, to live with intensity. Chyna is trapped in his deadly orbit. Chyna is a survivor, toughened by a lifelong struggle for safety and self-respect. Now she will be tested as never before. At first her sole aim is to get out aliveuntil, by chance, she learns the identity of Vesss next intended victim, a faraway innocent only she can save. Driven by a newly discovered thirst for meaning beyond mere self-preservation, Chyna musters every inner resource she has to save an endangered girl . . . as moment by moment, the terrifying threat of Edgler Foreman Vess intensifies.

This is a perfectly named book. Seriously. The entire story is intense and totally gripping. I couldn‘t stop reading even when I wanted to curse out the main characters for her decisions. Loved it! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I didn‘t really know what to pick for an ugly cover. So I guess I‘ll go with... boring?

Although Koontz can get carried away with descriptions, I can definitely confirm that this book lived up to the title. I doubt it could've been achieved with anything less than what Koontz described so I won't hold it against him. I do wish there had been more to Vess but overall a good book.

Anyone watched this? I'm halfway through with the book but I LOVE seeing a movie or series after. I did hear there was a blatant theft of concept for a movie called High Tension. May have to watch both.

KathyWheeler This book was so tense that I don‘t know if I could stand to watch a movie of it. 6mo
Whimsical.Curiosity @KathyWheeler it really is hard to put down and also hard to get through. I'm curious how they managed it into film. 6mo

Finally ripping off the bandaid and giving this a go. I've been avoiding it and reading smaller novels because my last Koontz took me awhiiiiiiiile. #Phantoms Fingers crossed I finish this before the little one arrives 👶

I always enjoy Dean Koontz‘s novels. You always get into the action right away. I started this book while on vacation in Seattle. I had just finished one book and picked this up to read a chapter or two before going to sleep. I should have known better. I was up until 3am. (And you get a picture of me with my sister‘s girlfriend‘s cat because I don‘t have one of the book.)

Sorry my pictures aren‘t prettier. I‘m at a hotel. I thought about using my view as a background for the book but the blackout curtain was actually a pain in the butt to close. This picture is hanging in my room. Better than the plain white sheets.

This book was definitely intense. But I'm glad to be done with it. It just made me uncomfortable from beginning to end.

KathyWheeler It is definitely an intense book but not my favorite Koontz. 10mo

What is it about women in peril that makes for blockbusters? Reading this book made me think of Emily Nussbaum‘s editorial on Law and Order: SVU. Read it if you haven‘t: “Trauma Queen.”

Aptly named. I felt anxious from start to finish. One of the few thrillers I've read that was actually thrilling.

wtimblin Looking at the cover makes my head hurt! 1y
StillLookingForCarmenSanDiego @wtimblin Haha this is true. I was also very hung over when I took thi pic. It was not a good scene. 😄 1y
akckitty I liked this one. I felt that the last handful of chapters dragged on and still somehow felt rushed. but that could of just been my headspace at the time. still a great read ☺️ 1y
StillLookingForCarmenSanDiego @akckitty yeah. It lost me a but in the middle, the protagonist made some wtf moves. But middle Nd the end had me hooked. 1y

Unfortunately, I do not have a copy of this book. The only photo that I could find that would fit is blurry, so apologies for that. I found this years ago on the bookshelf of a vacation rental property on the Outer Banks of North Carolina. The book title is perfect! I will never forget how petrified I felt reading this. The main character is a serial killer and is without a doubt #insaneinthebrain !😬#90sinjuly

Cathythoughts Hmmmmm sounds good. Must have a look. 2y
SpeculativeFemale Oh my, I remember that book. It was the first Dean Koontz novel I ever read. I actually bought it for my mother, and then read it when she was done with it. (We always joked about that being the best part of giving each other books as gifts) 2y

#riotgrams #welllovedreads

These are a few of my many #horror shelves, but this shelf is primarily dedicated to mass markets, which were almost all bought secondhand for $1 or less and are definitely "well loved" in appearances. I don't add to this collection often these days, because I like mass markets less and less the older I get.

I'm currently listening to this one- co-worker said she couldn't STOP reading.. but had to put the book down occasionally to catch her breath and to relax a bit! I will admit to not really noticing the traffic around me while listening intently.. so far- I've actually spoken to or hollered at the main character a number of times- contemplating getting it on Kindle so I don't have to wait till my next drive to find out what happens!

If you are looking for a thrill you could do worse then Intensity by Koontz. I was terrified from start to finish but was desperate to make sure everything turned out OK. If you're a fan of Stephen King you'll enjoy this book. I'll be needing a romance to calm down now I think!
