Stranger in a Strange Land
Stranger in a Strange Land | Robert A. Heinlein
Here at last is the complete, uncut version of Heinlein's all-time masterpiece, the brilliant novel that grew from a cult favorite to a bestseller to a classic in a few short years. It is the story of Valentine Michael Smith, the man from Mars who taught humankind grokking and water-sharing. And love.

I did not like this book. So sexist, made me cringe in many places. I also found the story dull and skimmed most of the last half. Not for me. I won‘t be reading anything else by this author.

This book was the first step I took in my sci-fi journey 2 years ago, so it holds a special spot in my heart!

I thought this was an epic journey which questions everything about our current social structure from the perspective of a true outsider. I loved following Michael through his earthly adventures and the implications it made of life thereafter.

P.S. I finally found the edition i wanted in a used bookstore after 2 years of searching!!

This was actually my first ever scifi novel and It was brilliant. Twenty years ago a space shuttle lands in mars and all contact with the crew is cut and they are presumed dead. Forward twenty years and when the next crew arrive on mars they meet Michael, a human, son of two previous crew members and since brought up by Martians. When mike is brought to earth for the first time it's a media circus and Mike has to learn the human ways and culture.

SaraFair Sounds awesome. He has others that are great too. I liked The Door into Summer and Have Spacesuit Will Travel. 13mo

I found it, once again, like many novels of its day, to not hold up to time‘s judgment. The sexism alone made me squirm. And it makes me wonder about the strange adolescence of books, where time either condemns them to infamy, raises them with excuses on high, or drops them into obscurity.

The immature mind often mistakes one for the other, or assumes that the greater the love, the greater the jealousy—in fact, they‘re almost incompatible; one emotion hardly leaves room for the other. One of my favourite #bannedbooks of all time. Robert Heinlein is one of the great grandaddies of #scifi and this novel, in my eyes is his magnum opus. A massive novel about a Martian born and raised human brought back to Earth who learns to live, love and #grok in fullness that nature of human beings. 🚀 👽. #readabannedbook #bannedbookweek

Jabberwocky Side note to anyone considering picking this up- Heinlein was writing in the late 50's and as such most of his work is rife with sexism. I take it as a hallmark of the times, but it's worth being aware of. (edited) 2y

This book surprised me. I'm not sure what I expected, but what I discovered was a masterpiece.

Heinlein uses the lens of Science Fiction, in the form of a man from Mars, to examine and occasionally satirize everything from religion to popular culture, and even social and sexual norms. And somehow, he manages to thread together this social commentary while still writing an entirely entertaining story. It is an amazing piece of writing.

I love returning to this book. When it can make you question everything from religion to sexuality to morals without alienating you. It was the Matrix before the movie was dreamt up. I return to this book because I find it a goodness to always question myself before I get to deep into myself. It really brings to light the old idea that your perception is your reality. Your only limits are those you set for yourself.

So here's the deal. I run a book club & one of the members (the only non-socially aware person in the group) insisted we read Stranger In a Strange Land. But I've heard it's one of those sci fi "classics" that's racist & sexist. I see too much of that shit every day in the news. So, for the first time EVER, I'm just going to read the Cliff's Notes & wing it. Fuck it. I'm going to read this other novel, The Steady Running of the Hour, instead. ✌?

I read this a few years ago because I like sci-fi and Heinlein is one of the "greats." That was before I had heard the other side about the classic sci fi greats, how their work was often rife with racism and sexism. I figured that out on my own with this one! It was super sexist and just plain weird (and not in the good way, as I actually love weird books). I finished it, but in an angry-read kinda way. #didntlikeitstillfinished #marchintoreading

Well, I liked it.

It touched on the absurdity of human culture a lot and tried to show the reader how we might live if we only lived in truth, by choice, and with consent.

I can see how it was a groundbreaking novel of its time, but not anymore, imho.

Liberty and freedom never go out of style, and I bet it would make for a really interesting sci-fi movie if it were adapted to our current society's hangups, rather than sexism, which is waning.

I was telling my husband my thoughts on this book so far, and he let me know he only read the abridged version as a teenager, so he doesn't remember all the details.

I can tell the book was at the cusp of the Sexual Revolution because it *wants* to sound open minded and futuristic and liberated, but it's still inundated with crap like "quickening of eggs" and Jill saying, "9 times out of 10, if a girl gets raped it's partly her fault". ? ? ?

Oh man. Chapters 18 - 24 really dragged on with more discussions on politics and religion.

I don't like the way the women are referred to as "girls" as a whole. The reader is not able to distinguish them apart much and the other male characters blow off their actions a lot. The women all come off as dim.

But at least chapter 24 ends with sex and chapter 26 takes off in a new environment with new characters. I am interested again.
