This book was amazing. Jasper Fforde did an excellent job of world building and thinking through each character and their motives and their behavior. Excellent work.

I need this to be a movie.

I have a couple of questions about litsy that have nothing to do with the book i am curently reading.

1.) Why am I limited to 451 characters in Reviews. I understand the limitation in blurbs and quotes. But reviews?!! I need more words to really capture what i thought of the book.

2.) Do i always have to tag a book in order to post a blurb? Can i use a hashtag?

#HelpaN00B
#Newbie

julesG Can't answer 1) with anything but "it is so". As to 2), yes, yiu always need to tag a book. You can tag an untitled book. 5d
rsteve388 Thats fair and good to know. 5d
readingjedi If you need to say more in a review you can always use the comments. I do it all the time. 5d
Kaye I‘ll just add my comment on your limited number of space for a review. I always struggle with that myself, as I‘m quite wordy. I‘ve had to learn to pare down my reviews to the basics with a general opinion of what I thought of the book and whether I‘d recommend it. 5d
rsteve388 Ah adding more of thw review to the comment section. Sounds good. 5d

I was really in the middle on this one but ultimately decided it was a pick because of how original the concept was and the fact that the author took such a big risk with his writing this story because of how strange and confusing it was. The description was very good and the story was interesting. A bit long and slow in parts, but overall, I liked it. #lmpbc

It‘s taking me a while to get into this weird world though. I love all the world building that‘s going on but with new and imagined worlds it takes commitment and the right frame of mind to immerse oneself into unusual places. And sometimes it takes more than one try to get into it. I love Fforde‘s writing and had the privilege to interview him when I was working for a Singapore newspaper and he was super nice!

Lillie Is this a standalone or the start of a new series? I love his Thursday Next series. 2w

I love the Tuesday Next series so anything new by Fforde catches my interest. A lively performance by #audiobook narrator Thomas Hunt kept me engaged in this alternate reality stand-alone. Humans hibernating through the winter—what an appealing concept. The plot involves mysterious goings-on and the central character (with a wonky head) is the only one we know for sure has sound moral ethics. Highly entertaining.

I‘m not a huge sci-fi reader, but I enjoyed this more than I thought I would! I got major Inception vibes while reading this-lots of dreaming, dreams within dreams, and people invading other‘s dreams. But the author created an interesting climate-changed world, and I really loved the MC, Charlie. And there were some great one-liners peppered throughout!

Jasper Fforde‘s books are quirky and fun! This one is set in a Wales where the people hibernate all winter, except the ones on charge of making sure the sleepers are safe. I‘ll definitely need to re-read this - I get something new every time I read his books!

This was a strange book for me. I‘m not huge into sci-fi, however, Fforde created a whole world here with its own history and industry. While reading it, I kept picturing who would play the characters when it got made into a movie. And I do hope it gets made into a movie!!

This was my first Jasper Fforde book. I know people love his work but for me it was reminiscent of how I felt about The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy: unusual, silly, sometimes funny but on the whole I just don't get what all the fuss is about. I doubt I will read any more of his books.

Cinfhen Such a helpful review! Those were my initial thoughts/doubts when I read the blurb. Don‘t think it‘s for me xx Thanks, I‘ll take a pass 1mo

Climate change has made for extreme Winter where hibernation is a needed evolution. HiberTech has made a drug Morphenox that enables sleep without dreams. The Consuls have found that a path to live inside the old dream world could mean less zombie-like creatures. But what does that mean to legal consent?
Fascinating premise and a well-told fantasy.

I am finally done with this. Sorry it took so long. I will send it out on Monday.
I was not the hugest fan of this book. It was not until the end that I felt like I understood what was going on and it all came together.
The quotes at the beginning of the chapters, and the footnotes made it difficult to read. I also had a hard time with the multiple story lines.
I am glad I read it, as it challenged me outside of my comfort zone.

OriginalCyn620 Oh dear! I haven‘t read anything by this author before. I wonder if his stuff is usually that difficult... 2mo

Jasper Fforde does silly, wild fantasy delightfully. Even his books that aren't his very best are really good. This is one of those, I think. I didn't lurrrve it, but I didn't want to put it down either. Anyway, this one has a zombie-adjacent element.

Fforde has been absent for a few years but is back with a new universe. Fforde is very good at evoking worlds that are slightly askew from our own and, like Gaiman & Pratchett, he uses them to point out the absurdities of our existence.

There was a lot to like about this book - a very intriguing premise (winters are so harsh that the majority of the population has to hibernate), pretty solid world building, interesting characters.
I'm going with so-so because like the narrator, the reader spends much of the time being confused or unaware. I'm okay with that, but the pacing of the book made me impatient with the main character and I was ready to just know what was going on

I reached page 128 and decided to bail. This is my first Jasper Fforde book and the premise sounded really interesting. There‘s a lot of world-building and I don‘t think that‘s my kind of book. It reminds me a little of Ready Player One, and I didn‘t get along great with that one either. So bummed. 😖
