Day 10: Forming the Fellowship makes me consider how much I love making connections through books. I appreciate that the #YearofTolkien has helped me form a fellowship with other Tolkien readers on Litsy. I also love seeing a reference to my favorite books in other books. Today I‘m finishing up a middle grade book and this mention of LotR jumped out at me. Mentions like this build a fellowship between authors and readers.

#MiddleEarthMarch

JazzFeathers So true. I think books can unite us more than so many other things in our daily life. Stories go deep inside in places we think nothing will reach. And the connection we make in those places are special. The #YearOfTolkien group is special to me. Dare l say precious? 😉 4mo

A ten year old recommended this book to me, so I got it out from the library. This is a sweet middle readers book, kind of a Little Women modern day family with twinges of a Hallmark Christmas special. It was definitely a feel-good book with themes of family, friends, neighborhoods and kindness and empathy.

First bail in a while. Sweet middle grade novel but it had too much of a “Hallmark Movie “ feel. Just feeling pressured because the countdown to getting as close to 150 books as possible, I want to read books that are worth my time. Definitely will try this book again next year when I‘m not on a time crunch !

Okay, unpopular opinion alert: I did not care very much for this book. There, it‘s out. Sorry. The characters were totally likeable, the setting was cute but the plot was just too simplistic and Hallmark movie like. It did have echoes of some of my favourite classics but that wasn‘t enough to win me over. Therefore: a cutesy quick read but nothing that will stick with me for very long. The cover is lovely though. 🤷🏻‍♀️

I‘ve read this before, but we just listened to the audiobook (read by Robin Miles) as a family and it was fantastic!

The five Vanderbeeker children have 11 days to convince their cranky shut-in landlord that he should renew their lease. Shenanigans ensue.

This story takes place around Christmas and has such a warm, comforting feel to it. It reminds me of The Penderwicks in some ways. Love it, love it.

As long as you are willing to suspend some disbelief, read like a kid (aka ignore what the adults should be doing), and enjoy some sap, this #middlegrade read will delight and uplift. The 5 Vanderbeeker siblings remind me of the Penderwicks and bring some Christmas cheer to their Harlem neighborhood and crotchety landlord. I‘m not 100% in love, but I did stay up long past my bedtime to finish it all in one night. #kidlit

Sorry for the poor lighting. I just finished this book by book light and I know I'm late to the party hype, but I LOVED it. I got it from the library today and finished it in one sitting (minus taking my dog to the vet and putting my little guy down for bed.) It was so good. I felt like I fit right into the world of the Vanderbeekers-it was written so warmly and invitingly. If you enjoy kidlit, READ THIS BOOK!

Prairiegirl_reading I like the picture! I‘ve had this on my ridiculous tbr shelf (and by that I mean entire tbr book case) for a while now. It sounds like I need to move it up on the priority list. 9mo

I‘m just reading middle grade books from now on. Pure saccharine goodness straight to the heart. The Vanderbeeker children are beautifully written and developed each distinct from the others. Supportive loving adults. These children take positive action when they believe they are going to lose the brownstone they love. I am in love with this family. Eagerly awaiting sequel and movie. Reese Witherspoon bought the rights already.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐A heartwarming #middlegrade book about a family with five children who find out several days before Christmas that their lease will not be renewed and have to move out in a week. The children then band together to come up with a plan to save their home. We meet their grumpy landlord, their incredible elderly neighbors, and other families that live on their street. Such a sweet, enjoyable book.

My husband and I are on a mini-vacation. I woke up way too early this morning (my body must still be on toddler time), so I'm out on our hotel balcony with a book and a sliver of sunrise. It's also freezing and supposed to be rainy today, which is why the plan is to visit several bookstores! 😁

BucklingBookshelves Ahhh, being by the water always makes happy. 🌊 But yea, toddler time is so a real thing even when you have the chance to be on vacation time 🤷‍♀️ Enjoy your trip! I‘m sure some time away before baby #2 will be great. Loving the rainy day bookstore plan too 😊📚 1y

This was a pleasant enough read. It's definitely old school classic like (think All of a Kind Family or Harriet the Spy) in it's feel with vague parents and kids' perspective. But, it's refreshingly multi cultural, bi racial and diverse although it would have been nice if more had been done with this. But, it was jarring to have smart phones casually thrust into the story, unnecessarily. It kind of ruined the flow of the story.

The biracial Vanderbeeker family has lived in the same brownstone in Harlem for the kids‘ whole lives. But the 5 siblings are horrified to find out their mean landlord (“the Beiderman”) has not renewed their lease and they‘ll have to move. Can the kids change his mind by Christmas?

This felt a lot like middle grade books I loved as a kid (Ramona, the Melendy Quartet, etc), and as one of five kids, I really enjoyed the sibling dynamics.

RebelReader Do you think my 13 year old niece would like this story? 2y
howjessreads @RebelReader - I think so. It‘s maybe a bit young - the 5 children range from age 4 to age 12, but it‘s definitely geared more like ages 8-12 I‘d say. But the 12 year old twins have some “should I go to the 8th grade dance” drama that could appeal to age 13! :) 2y
