Lamb | Christopher Moore
The birth of Jesus has been well chronicled, as have his glorious teachings, acts, and divine sacrifice after his thirtieth birthday. But no one knows about the early life of the Son of God, the missing years -- except Biff, the Messiah's best bud, who has been resurrected to tell the story in the divinely hilarious yet heartfelt work "reminiscent of Vonnegut and Douglas Adams" (Philadelphia Inquirer).Verily, the story Biff has to tell is a miraculous one, filled with remarkable journeys, magic, healings, kung fu, corpse reanimations, demons, and hot babes. Even the considerable wiles and devotion of the Savior's pal may not be enough to divert Joshua from his tragic destiny. But there's no one who loves Josh more -- except maybe "Maggie," Mary of Magdala -- and Biff isn't about to let his extraordinary pal suffer and ascend without a fight.

Wanted this to be more in the vain of “Life of Brian.” “Lamb” can be really funny when it wants to, but it gets bogged down with Moore‘s descriptions of Biff and Joshua‘s time with the three magi. It gets quite dark at the end and the twist that explains everything is quite clever. Kudos to Moore for the ambition and I‘m sure the landslide of Christian backlash he received.

As usual, Moore delivers a Monty Pythonesque rendition of a famous story; this one, the lost gospel of Levi who is also called Biff, is the story of Jesus‘ (or rather Joshua‘s) life quest to figure out how to be the messiah and refrain from “knowing a woman” which becomes all the more difficult as Mary Magdalene (Maggie) arrives on the scene. While it‘s all in jest, its a nice touch having Jesus seem a lot more human. Fantastic read. Very funny.

Lamb: The Gospel According to Biff, Christ's Childhood Pal by Christopher Moore

This is one of my top 5 favorites! The book focuses on the years that Jesus was growing up through the eyes of his best friend, Biff. I laughed, I rolled my eyes, and I cried. I absolutely love it!

It‘s a Labor Day miracle! I gave this book to an atheist friend ages ago who didn‘t appreciate the nuances or the humor of the book (sacrilege!) and never gave the book back to me. I‘ve forgiven her for not appreciating the story - maybe you need to know the Jesus Narrative - but I never forgot that she didn‘t return it. 🙂 Today I found this in a free pile in excellent condition and I feel as if I‘ve won the lottery. This book ❤️❤️.

KathyWheeler I loved this book. 3y
KatieDid927 One of my absolute faves. And you‘re probably right, you need to be closely acquainted with the story in order to fully appreciate this book. I grew up in a fundamentalist Christian home and have read the Bible. I discovered this book as a new agnostic in college and it‘s genius. But I think having read the entire Bible previously helped. 3y
mandarchy I am an atheist although I have read the bible and I love history - so maybe it was easy for me to connect with this book. I loved it. I had a friend borrow my book “In the Beginning“ which was a gift - an anthology of creation stories. I love mythology and folklore. Her house burned down and I have to suppress the urge to ask if my book survived. 3y

Hard to pick!

Biff will be giving a sermon to a small group of people while doing a complicated yoga pose.
Jamie will be building a cabin from the lumber he made himself.
Inigo would be practicing his sword play prepping himself for the six-fingered man.
And Matilda would be reading a book on how to camp while using her powers to set up her tent.

It‘s a great book when you laugh just as hard rereading for #booksandbrewsclub.
"I like to think that while he carried out his sacred mission, Jesus of Nazareth might have enjoyed a sense of irony and the company of a wisecracking buddy. This story is not and never was meant to challenge anyone‘s faith; however, if one‘s faith can be shaken by stories in a humorous novel, one may have a bit more praying to do." ??

I put this in my long list of decade favorites, but it‘s not going to be in the top ten. So, I‘ll use it for #adventrecommends I‘m sure many Christians think this is a horrible, sacrilegious book, but 2 of my pastor friends suggested I read it. It‘s hilarious and very imaginative. It‘s also emotional towards the end. Love the friendship between Biff & Joshua (Jesus). I have a favorite part but don‘t want to spoil it for anyone. @emilyrose_x

Caterina My seminary classmates keep recommending this, I really need to finally get around to reading it!! 4y
Scochrane26 @Caterina Yes, you should definitely read it! It may be the funniest book I‘ve ever read. But, also touching. It helped me understand communion better. I‘m not sure the author was going for that, but I got a good message from it. While also laughing for most of the book. 4y

Biff, Joshua's (his real name; Jesus is the Greek version) friend is brought back to Earth to tell his irreverent tale. I liked Josh's humanness. He lives through Biff's experiences. He can't sin but wants to know what it feels like. He isn't hearing from his father and he turns to Biff for advice. In search of answers, they seek out the magi (the missing 18 yrs). It's one hell of a journey. Very funny at times, but I finished feeling unsatisfied.
