I had a hard time getting into this, but it was good overall. The narrator is an aki, a sin-eater, part of the lowest caste in Kos but absolutely necessary to the city‘s existence. He becomes embroiled in palace intrigues and gets caught up in a rebellion. Ends on a cliffhanger, which is annoying. #52Books23 #highfantasy could also be #presenttense or #containsafuneral or #featuresmythology or probably others

This amazing YA Fantasy is based on African mythology. It is about an entire culture built on the backs of outcast sin eaters, who ensure that those with money and power are never burdened by guilt.

There are so many parallels to the marginalization of POCs, and Onyebuchi uses this complex world to highlight inequities that exist in our society.

This is a Nigerian fantasy about a land called Kos, where mages conjures out sin-beasts that are killed and eaten by aki. Taj, the most talented aki, is cocky and desperate to provide for his family. One day he is called to eat the sin of a royal that thrusts him into the center of a conspiracy to destroy Kos.
It is a unique story that makes you think of how guilt could overcome you, even if it is not your own.

I love the world the author created for this story. Mages, Akis who are sin eaters, intrigue, mythology and action all make this a great story. Taj is a great protagonist. I have to see where this story goes. Definitely picking up the next book. And can I just say the cover is stunning! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I absolutely adore Taj and I‘m totally shipping him and Aliya. I kept waffling with who Taj should trust and my instincts were correct most of the time except that giant twist at the end. Tochi reeled me in and now I have to read the next book. I think some may find that ending coming out of nowhere but I loved that it brought this whole other level to the story. There was political intrigue, murder plots, subterfuge, and chaos.

This was supposed to be my #Night book for the #Booked2019 prompt but it‘s just not going to work for me today. Too much Hindi I don‘t know in I am a Troll to be able to face a new vocab in fiction. First chapter is compelling though.

Give me some room and I think it will be fine. 😊

pythoness I really enjoyed Beasts Made of Night, though I think it was last year when I read it? Very interesting in its worldbuilding, from what I remember, and it had an interesting cast of characters. 5y
GlassAsDiamonds @pythoness that‘s good to know!!! I think I‘ll like it once I settle down to it but I found that I just couldn‘t deal with the quantum of the created vocabulary especially since there‘s no glossary!!! Usually it wouldn‘t be enough it‘ll make me stop but I was coming to it immediately after two heavy non-fiction that included a lot of untranslatable or simply untranslated vocab and Ness (woah - my dictionary is still recovering!)... couldn‘t do it! 5y

Still a really fun read! Taj is a great narrator whose voice struck the perfect chord of I‘m-jaded-but-I-still-care. His narration and his interactions with others sucked you quickly into his world, which was rich & satisfying. The plot was a little messy, especially at the end, but the characters & the setting, as well as the exciting magic / philosophy sprinkled in throughout, made up for it! Ready to see where this goes next. ★★★½.

I wish the pages within were as stunning as the cover. For a novel under 300 pages the story seemed to drag on and repeat itself. I did enjoy the final few chapters of the book‘s climax, though I won‘t be picking up book 2.

I really enjoyed this book, #beastsmadeofnight (and I'm absolutely infatuated with the cover). The world building here is fantastic, and I appreciated both the thought behind the traditions that rule this fantasy country and the development of the protagonist. At times, I thought the telling (rather than showing) meant that certain relationships didn't ring as true for me, but the overall story arc outweighed that weakness.

Gorgeous cover. Fascinating premise. Terrible execution. Ends on a massive cliffhanger but also didn't make me care enough about it to be mad. Just confused. Skip this one.

TommieMarie74 That‘s disappointing. I had high hopes for this one. 😕 6y
Crystallinegirl @TommieMarie74 Me too! I wanted to like it so bad. The main character is just dumb and makes stupid decisions. Also wonders if he should fall in love with every. single. girl. that he meets. No consideration given to how they feel, of course. The geography felt like it was constantly changing - the city is close! No it's far away! Suddenly he's in an ivy maze! Just frustrating to read. Don't get me started on the "ending" if you can call it that. 6y

This was the first YA novel written by a Nigerian author and it won‘t be my last. Though, I am not familiar with the culture reading this story made me want to know more and learn more. Taj is an awesome protagonist. Despite the odds, he remained determined to do what was necessary. He made the right decision after learning the truth. I‘m looking forward to the next book because that ending left me hanging. #beastsmadeofnight #tochionyebuchi

Beasts Made of Night is a Nigerian-influenced fantasy and Onyebuchi‘s debut novel, and it shows great promise (characters, action sequences, sin-eating concept) despite some rough edges (pacing). It is no secret that the fantasy genre has long been Eurocentric, but building on a foundation laid by early diverse voices, it is exciting to see authors like Onyebuchi break this mold, telling stories particular to their background and experiences.

Why must books leave you endings that feel like you‘ve been tossed off a cliff? It‘s a cliffhanger... It‘s very detailed and yet very little in the world is actually explained, they act as if math and magic work together to conjure these sin-beast but no math I know works that way. The characters were engaging but some decisions the MC made didn‘t make sense. I guess it was just okay for me, average fantasy and I just couldn‘t get into the story.

While not perfect, this book had some great storytelling in it, and a lot of potential. The mythical world was an excellent mix of rich & deadly, Taj & his friends just the right amount of brace, kind, and pig-headed. Not to mention that slow-burn romance I'm looking forward to seeing more of ?. So even if the plot was a bit predictable, the writing a bit clumsy, overall I was still engrossed. Looking forward to seeing where it goes next! ★★★½

This book has a really interesting premise and great characters. I really enjoyed it, but I was SO disappointed by the ending. I understand books that leave room for a sequel/series, but it felt like there were chapters missing. It was such an abrupt ending that left so many unanswered questions. It turned me off to any future books.

Interesting...so this is not a traditional North American written fantasy. This reminds me A LOT of oral stories I've heard during lessons from Metis, Cree, Stoney Nakoda and Mohawk peoples in Canada.

It's not a story about the characters or anything. It's the lesson of justice and power. Super interesting and unique read.
