My GOSH. The art in this volume has no business being this stunning. It is an absolute feast from start to finish. It took me longer to read the story than usual because I kept pausing to take in the art. Did you ever wonder why Morpheus was so worn out when he was trapped by Burgess? This story answers that.

Audio fiction isn't usually my cup of tea, but this was an excellent production of Gaiman's Morpheus. The voice acting, especially James McAvoy as Morpheus, Kat Denning as Death and Taron Egerton as John Constantine. I read the comics when they first came out back in the 80s, but hearing them performed brought them new life.
5 💥💥💥💥💥 Highly recommended.

If I could, I would take a picture of every page to share, because every page is drawn and colored with a depth of vision and rich quality from the other side of reality... Gorgeously weird and inventively elegant. The story doesn‘t break new ground, but it fits the universe comfortably - which coming back to it something like twenty-five years later, that‘s remarkable in itself. Still Gaiman, however, and Gaiman is always worth it.

The thing about OVERTURE is, it answers questions I can't believe I never thought to ask. Like, who and where are the Endless's parents?

(In my defence, there's that little throwaway bit in I don't remember which volume where Delirium says they haven't got parents, but I probably should've known better than to take her word for it.) #comics

This is gonna be THAT book.

You know the one. You've got a series you love and adore, and there's this one particular volume that means the whole frickin world to you. Only sometimes, when you reread it, it only means a sizeable portion of the world, or a few pieces.

Until you revisit it again, and it's back to being everything.

THAT book.

I'm so glad this exists. I never thought to ask for it, but it was always what I needed. #comics

I didn't let myself start it tonight because it's gonna take over my world once I do, but this? Is what I've been waiting for.

OVERTURE was my favourite book of 2015, and it's one of the few comics I HAD to own in print. Even in the pixelly digital review copy DC was kind enough to give me, the art BLEW. MY. MIND. It's gonna be intense in a more effective format.

And I mean, look at the cover under the dust jacket! LOOK AT IT! #comics

GrilledCheeseSamurai The art in this one is insane! 👌 6y
xicanti @GrilledCheeseSamurai it's like J.H. Williams III heard what everyone else thinks a panel is, and he was like, "Nah." And don't even get me started on Dave Stewart's colours. I'll just start gibberish. 6y

Two days left on my long vacation, and I'm diving into this visual treat by Neil Gaiman and his wonderful illustrators pulled from the shelves of my local library.

#neilgaiman #thesandman

Lindy I was thinking of Gaiman's Sandman series, well, specifically Death, when I listened to a different story that features a female version of the Reaper: 7y
KellyMuser @Lindy Thanks for the reference, ill have to check it out!👍 7y
Lindy @KellyMuser Well, I don't know your taste in books yet. I would recommend it to someone who likes ornate romantic prose, or has a special interest in lesbian content, or modern retellings of Greek mythology - preferably all three. 7y
See All 6 Comments
KellyMuser @Lindy I'm kind of an eclectic reader. I tend to avoid romance, and have a strong sci-fi leaning. I like stories that are dark or strange. Kurt Vonnegut, Neil Gaiman, and Ray Bradbury are three of my favorite go-to authors. I also have a weakness for Russian literature. What do you like? 7y
Lindy @KellyMuser I'm an eclectic reader too. I especially look for a fresh voice in writing style & don't mind a challenging style as long as I feel it has heart behind it. Stories about women's lives that are different from mine - other places, other times - tend to appeal. Ali Smith, Margaret Atwood, Miriam Toews, Jeanette Winterson: these are some of the authors I trust. 7y
Lindy @KellyMuser Oh, and I enjoy Vonnegut, Bradbury and Gaiman also! 7y

Photoadaynov16 Favorite Neil Gaiman - While I've only been reading comics regularly for about two years, this was my first foray into the Sandman world and it blew me away. While the story is great, what really got me was J.H. Williams III's art. He made me really rethink the possibilities of comic book art. It added multiple dimensions to Gaiman's story and it is worth the read. @RealLifeReading the

I savored this book over the course of the afternoon. The art is amazing! I'm not even sure amazing is an adequate adjective for the artwork in this comic. I enjoyed the story just as much as the art and I'm glad I got to visit this world again.

Marchpane Would you recommend this for comics/graphic novels newbie? Or is it a bit ambitious to start with? 8y
Eyelit @Marchpane I don't know that you can go into this without having read the original series first. I know it's a prequel to the series, but there are a lot of characters and callbacks to the original that a newbie might not fully appreciate. If you're going into the whole sandman series as a start, that would be fine. Sandman was the first full series I read when I started reading comics. Hope that helps. 8y
