A riveting psychological thriller inspired by the never-caught Zodiac Killer, about a young detective determined to apprehend the serial murderer who destroyed her family and terrorized a city twenty years earlier. Caitlin Hendrix has been a Narcotics detective for six months when the killer at the heart of all her childhood nightmares reemerges: the Prophet. An UNSUB what the FBI calls an unknown subject the Prophet terrorized the Bay Area in the 1990s and nearly destroyed her father, the lead investigator on the case. The Prophet s cryptic messages and mind games drove Detective Mack Hendrix to the brink of madness, andMack s failure to solve the series of ritualized murders eleven seemingly unconnected victims left with the ancient sign for Mercury etched into their flesh was the final nail in the coffin for a once promising career. Twenty years later, two bodies are found bearing the haunting signature of the Prophet. Caitlin Hendrix has never escaped the shadow of her father s failure to protect their city. But now the ruthless madman is killing again and has set his sights on her, threatening to undermine the fragile barriershe rigidly maintains for her own protection, between relentless pursuit and dangerous obsession. Determined to decipher his twisted messages and stop the carnage, Caitlin ignores her father s warnings as she draws closer to the killer with each new gruesome murder. Is it a copycat, or can this really be the same Prophet who haunted her childhood? Will Caitlin avoid repeating her father s mistakes and redeem her family name, or will chasing the Prophet drag her and everyone she loves into the depths of the abyss?"

After seeing good reviews on the 4th installment of this series, I decided to go back and read the first, Unsub. This true crime based thriller was a little uneven for me. However, having said that, I found this story both suspenseful and creepy! I rarely get creeped out by books but this one had my heart racing it‘s pretty brutal, but if that doesn‘t bother you then you will likely enjoy this book!

This story about a detective's hunt for a serial killer was fast-paced, scary, disturbing and very hard to put down.

I dont usually read thrillers. I was gifted this book so I felt obligated to read it. I enjoyed the killer to be inspired by Dantes inferno. I haven't read it and I wonder if I would have put the two together if I had and would find this book more enjoyable.

This book was recommended to me by my library. This book did not disappoint. This was like reading a Criminal Minds episode. It was non stop action and terrifying. It had a twist at the end that I did not anticipate. This read quickly and had short chapters. The writing style was easy to get into and was very descriptive. It was truly terrifying. I HIGHLY recommend! #thriller #unsub

This is one of my favorite procedural thrillers! Caitlin Hendrix is a badass detective, the killer is nuanced and though based off Zodiac, different enough to keep my attention, even on a second reading. I can‘t wait for the TV adaptation! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Book 13/24 for #brc28

Book mail! I ordered from my local indie bookstore, Murder by the Book, because I wanted to do a little something to help support them during this time (not tooting my own horn or anything). One book was back ordered so I should be getting that soon. Love that this book store is all about crime fiction, thrillers, mysteries, etc. #shoplocal #supportsmallbusinesses

The best way I can describe this book is "cinematic." It is fast-paced and very focused on creating crime-scene, insane criminal, and police procedure visuals. For me, though, it was done at the expense of any subtlety and felt kind of generic. Which disappoints me bc I was really looking forward to this one.

OK WOW. I knew the reviews for this one were positive but I had no idea this would be so pulse-pounding, quick-paced, and addictive. How have I never read Meg Gardiner before? Is this her norm? Because wow wow wow 😮💯

This is a serial killer story. Terrifying and super suspenseful. I ABSOLUTELY LOVED it when Caitlin cracked the killer‘s code: IT‘S SO GOOD you guys.

A gritty, dark detective story written by a female with a female lead: YESSS!

The UNSUB is a serial killer who stages intricate, over-the-top crime scenes as he terrorizes the San Francisco area for several years. Caitlyn Hendrix is a 2nd generation detective following in her father's footsteps, now pursuing the same killer who forced her dad into early retirement because of the psychological toll the case took on him. This is a well-crafted thriller with characters you'll want to read about again.

5 ☆ I loved it - Meg Gardiner is one of my favorite‘s and outdid herself again.
This is a fascinating psyche thriller about a serial killer back and on the rampage after twenty years. The suspense was unreal, terrifying.. my nerves were on end and I was literally shaking in my shoes! 😰 Soooo good!
I highly recommend this and its follow-up novel “Into the Black Nowhere” (another 5 ☆) to thriller/suspense/crime seekers.

My first book by this author & I was impressed. It reminded me of Karin Slaughter's books-dark & suspenseful. I liked the MC, Caitlin Hendrix, a recently made a narcotics detective who becomes obsessed with apprehending an unsub known as "The Prophet"-a resurfaced serial killer who ruined her ??‍✈️ father 20-years prior. Lots of twists including a big one I didn't see coming ?& a good set up for the next book that released earlier this year.

SandyW This one is on my TBR. Glad to hear! 6y
