The Life We Bury
The Life We Bury | Allen Eskens
College student Joe Talbert has the modest goal of completing a writing assignment for an English class. His task is to interview a stranger and write a brief biography of the person. With deadlines looming, Joe heads to a nearby nursing home to find a willing subject. There he meets Carl Iverson, and soon nothing in Joe's life is ever the same. Carl is a dying Vietnam veteran--and a convicted murderer. With only a few months to live, he has been medically paroled to a nursing home, after spending thirty years in prison for the crimes of rape and murder. As Joe writes about Carl's life, especially Carl's valor in Vietnam, he cannot reconcile the heroism of the soldier with the despicable acts of the convict. Joe, along with his skeptical female neighbor, throws himself into uncovering the truth, but he is hamstrung in his efforts by having to deal with his dangerously dysfunctional mother, the guilt of leaving his autistic brother vulnerable, and a haunting childhood memory. Thread by thread, Joe unravels the tapestry of Carls conviction. But as he and Lila dig deeper into the circumstances of the crime, the stakes grow higher. Will Joe discover the truth before its too late to escape the fallout? From the Trade Paperback edition.

👍
I liked it! Compelling story, kept me interested the entire way.
BUT, the convenient use of lack of police procedure and the FBI being “too busy” to help solve a rape and murder of a teenager made me 🙄
Nevertheless, a good audiobook

I jist discovered Chirp! Audiobook deals every day. I just got the tagged book (plus 4 or 5 more 😬) for $1 or $2 each.
It‘s run by Bookbub.
Anyone else use this? I‘m excited- had to share.

This is EXACTLY what I was in the mood for reading—a novel that is page-turning with short chapters and compelling writing. I never heard of this author before, but I found this book in my own #LittleFreeLibrary from an anonymous donor. Many thanks!

CouronneDhiver I love that author - recommend them all! 4mo
SqueakyChu @CouronneDhiver Thanks! I LOVE his writing. It‘s very realistic and even funny at times. I will be sure to look for more of his books in the future. 4mo
SqueakyChu @CouronneDhiver I found one other book by this same author in a used book store today. Should these books be read in the order they were written, or does it not matter? 4mo

It's been a while since I've done a monthly recap, but this was a particularly good month for me so I couldn't help it! I was all about romance and thrillers this month, and my new Kindle is the real MVP. I can't even tell you how big a difference it makes to read library e-books on it and I've also been pleasantly surprised with my Kindle Unlimited finds. Here's hoping April is just as filled with quality reading time! 😄

I had never heard of this book or author, but was browsing Libby and the blurb really caught my attention. I was HOOKED from the first chapter, stayed up way too late last night reading "one more chapter", and then missed my subway stop this morning bc I was so absorbed. I'm blown away by how much I enjoyed this "on a whim" find! Excellent, suspenseful writing, and I loved the characters. I've already checked out three more of Eskens' books ?

I kept reading until the end, but I found the resolution and the twists to be predictable, and some plot elements to be stereotypical. If you don‘t read thrillers and mystery books very often, try it out. If you read a lot of them, pass.

This book was so good! As a debut novel, it is 20x better than a novel I read recently that was probably that author's 20th novel. The characters were real - fully developed with flaws, fears and all. The story about a Vietnam Vet who was convicted of murder - but did he do it? - really drew me in. The suspense was real and the ending was most satisfying. Looking forward to more of this author's work.

I liked this book. A LOT. It was everything I enjoy. Good writing, interesting and compelling story, great characters, mystery, conflict...all of it. Then the last 100 pages happened and it went off the rails into superfluous nonsense and too much story and trying way too hard to be action packed and just way too hard in general. It did calm itself down for the last 10 pages or so, which was nice. I still wound up liking it but not loving the book

I‘m a shameless fan of legal thrillers, and I enjoyed both of my previous Eskens experiences.

This book (his debut) started with all of the right pieces: a likeable college student, a terminally-ill convict, an overworked detective, a reopened homicide case... and it was a good page-turner!

The missing element, for me, was plausibility... I would have exchanged some of the high-drama plot for more depth in Carl‘s character.

This is for book club next week, and I probably wouldn‘t have read it otherwise. The pacing was good, keeping me reading (even if I did kind of have to read it) but there were problems in the plot - Joe was smart enough to figure out a cold case but so stupid he approaches a murderer, not once but TWICE, without a plan or backup. Lila starts out interesting, but she‘s treated in such a cliched way that I was disappointed. Between pick and so-so.

DivineDiana I was “betwixt and between” on this one too, but I felt much more positive after my Book Club discussion. 😀 2y
