The Life We Bury
The Life We Bury | Allen Eskens
College student Joe Talbert has the modest goal of completing a writing assignment for an English class. His task is to interview a stranger and write a brief biography of the person. With deadlines looming, Joe heads to a nearby nursing home to find a willing subject. There he meets Carl Iverson, and soon nothing in Joe's life is ever the same. Carl is a dying Vietnam veteran--and a convicted murderer. With only a few months to live, he has been medically paroled to a nursing home, after spending thirty years in prison for the crimes of rape and murder. As Joe writes about Carl's life, especially Carl's valor in Vietnam, he cannot reconcile the heroism of the soldier with the despicable acts of the convict. Joe, along with his skeptical female neighbor, throws himself into uncovering the truth, but he is hamstrung in his efforts by having to deal with his dangerously dysfunctional mother, the guilt of leaving his autistic brother vulnerable, and a haunting childhood memory. Thread by thread, Joe unravels the tapestry of Carls conviction. But as he and Lila dig deeper into the circumstances of the crime, the stakes grow higher. Will Joe discover the truth before its too late to escape the fallout? From the Trade Paperback edition.

4¼⭐
I thought I‘d try something by this author and this 1st in a series seemed like a good place to start. I have to say this didn‘t disappoint me. I really liked Joe and his sidekick, Lila as amateur detectives. Although Joe made some foolish decisions…at least when the sh*t hit the fan, he realized his stupidity. Overall, this really kept me guessing right up until the end. The narration by Zach Villa was fantastic.

What a great book! I loved the characters - Joe and Lila and Carl - and Jeremy. A nice welcome back to reading for fun 😁

Jeansandatshirt Omg - reading the second book and I‘m in love with the narration (it‘s my commuting book!). I didn‘t think I‘d like a different narrator than the one for The Life We Bury, but I totally love this one, too! 2y

This was a solid thriller with a lot of depth. Kept me listening (walking to #audiobook), couldn‘t wait to hear the conclusion. Not due to a twisty, surprising ending but because of the characters and how they dealt with the unfolding story. Tenderness and family resolutions are not common in this genre, I‘ll definitely read the second book in the series. #BookspinBingo @TheAromaofBooks

For the #birthdaybash readathon, I‘m planning on:

Finishing the tagged book on audio (it‘s so good!)
Reading chapters 28-29 in Lonesome Dove
Finishing Survivor Type (a short story)
Putting a dent in Meet Me At The Museum (my #bookspin)

Hope you get some reading in today, too!

30 years ago a crime was committed and who did it is now dying. A college student will write a paper about this person‘s story, new perspectives arise. I saw the twist coming but I was wrong in my guess. There are some heartwarming parts at least for me but also inconsistencies-using a cellular you forgot in another place in last chapter?🧐In general I enjoy it and want to read book 2. This book was received from @EH2018 in 2018 thanks❤️

# 12 of 2020 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
#Thelifewebury has been sitting in my audible account for years untouched. I started it and became so intrigued with the story that I started reading the rest of it.
A college assignment begins the investigation into a 30 year old murder. And whether or not the convicted killer is guilty or innocent.
This one was well written with underlining stories that flowed.

Maybe I am just a snob but I really did not like the overly simplistic writing and the sad characterization of women - really is there a more trite rendering then the beautiful, smart, but damaged neighbor who is just going to lift her skirt for you the second you show her an ounce of kindness?
I was glad when the book was over. Luckily it was a quick read.

I'm pleasantly surprised. The story is sufficiently twisty. There are interesting main, secondary, and tertiary characters.

By its very nature, there is a fair amount of violence (mentioned as being in the past and in real-time)—murders, rapes, assaults. It's gross and unsettling; but, if you're a regular murder mystery/thriller reader, it's probably not above the level of your usual reading.

Finished this a few minutes ago. Honestly most of the book is so great, there are a few convenient plot devices but the story‘s good. The end is why I mark it as so so. It gets kinda cliche with the bad guy just saying what he‘s going to do. Also the fact that the FBI is “to busy” to investigate this murder bothered me but that‘s such a small detail in the story.

Dark and intense. A school project brings a young college student to the bedside of a convicted murderer for a dying declaration. But will the college student need to make one of his own? The writing is serviceable, the characters are fine but it is the plot that shines.

Yay! I used this for #soldiersstory for #booked2019 (which is perhaps a bit of a stretch, but it is part of the story), so I have finally completed #booked2019!!
This book was okay. A quick read but predictable and the pacing felt off. I liked the premise but It turned into a definite “dude bro” book about halfway through where the MC started physically fighting people and fending off potential murders left and right.

This book tells the story of a 21 year old college student with an alcoholic mother and an autistic brother. He moves 2 hours away to go to school and must write the memoir of an elderly person for his English class. He goes to a nursing home and is paired with a paroled convict who was sentenced to life in prison for raping and murdering a 14 year old girl, and was released when he needs palliative care because of pancreatic cancer.

I kept reading until the end, but I found the resolution and the twists to be predictable, and some plot elements to be stereotypical. If you don‘t read thrillers and mystery books very often, try it out. If you read a lot of them, pass.
