Starting to get a little tired despite my two naps today. 🤭
Moving this party to bed and starting this novella. I will definitely have to finish it in the morning. #24in48
I hit 8:13 for #24In48 while I finished RIVER OF TEETH, a book that started a bit rough but soon won me over. I immediately requested the duology omnibus from the library because I‘ve gotta see what‘s next for the surviving members of the crew.
Now I‘m gonna give my eyes a small rest (and my ereader time to recharge) with a comic, some poetry, and my daily chapter of INDIGENOUS MEN AND MASCULINITIES.
A pulp Western … except it‘s set in an alternate Wild Wild American South … and it‘s got hippos instead of horses and cattle … and the band of merry outlaws are gay, lesbian and non binary. I ignored the questionable stereotyping and let the ridiculous fun of it carry me away. It‘s short—a 4-hour #audiobook—and I‘ve got the second half of this duology queued up next in Hoopla.
This was a fun adventure and I'll follow up with the rest of the series. It did feel like there was a lot crammed into a small novella. I think I'd have preferred to see this world and it's characters explored in more detail with a full novel or series of novels.
1️⃣ None, I'm not Irish.
2️⃣ It's a cliché, but luck does not exist. There is probability and happenstance.
3️⃣ I tried to read it, but I bailed. Actually, I raged quit it.
4️⃣ H. Léander d'Entremont. You won't find him in the history books but he was one super ambitious, highly diluted curmudgeon! What a guy!
5️⃣ I'll send love and kisses. Let's start with you @howjessreads 😘😘😘😘😘
That's it! I'm done. This book could have been so good. Archie would be a great character were she not a walking cliché with inane speaking patterns and bad French grammar. It's profoundly insulting. It's sloppy and I blame both Gailey and whoever was her editor for this. Such stereotypes would have condemned her had they been about African-Americans or Natives, but it's just a Créole, a Francophone, so who cares? I DO! Bye!
This novella is fun. Were it not for the broken French grammar, the clichéd and incorrect attempts are representing a French accent, and the absence of orthographic accents, I'd be delighted by it. Right now, I'm annoyed. She is Créole in the 1850s. So, it should be 'Régina'. It should be 'Un instant' and the Hs should be exaggerated, not absent. And there is such a thing as feminine and masculine in French. But did the author enquire? Check?
This didn't quite work for me.
It's a heist/western combo. The Western part works, but there heist doesn't have the momentum that it needs. I want the feeling that there villain/antagonist is one step ahead of me, but that the heroes are two steps ahead of them and I need to keep reading to catch up with everyone. This villain was too mustache-twirly. The heroes were too naive. The plan was blah.

This was a fun, quick paced sci-fi novella about the aftermath of a Congressional decision to bring Hippos to Louisiana as an alternative food source. There was a little insta love but the amount of flirting from all characters made it easy to get over. And super casual discussion of sexual fluidity. I thought it was excellent lgbtq rep!

If you would have asked me if I'd be interested in an alternate history western, I probably would have felt indifferent. However, throw in a man-eating hippo caper with hippo riding cowboys, you've definitely piqued my interest. This is a short read (less than 200 pages), and in half a day, I'm almost done. I'm enjoying this so much!
Pick! An alternate-history Western set in Louisiana where hippos are bred and ridden through the swamps. A most unusual story! It ended somewhat abruptly, so going to have to get the sequel . . . Thanks, @Christine for reminding me about this one!
Well this was as fun as I was expecting (count me among the many Litsy folks who can‘t resist a hippo cowboy alternate history - I‘ve been wanting to get to this one for ages)! And it also eased my withdrawal symptoms from having just finished a binge of the second season of Westworld. 🤠
Man eating hippos? Crazy adventure with some unlikely characters? You'll get all that and more from this fun, fast paced novella. A group of misfits are on a mission from the US Government to relocate feral hippo populations in Louisiana, but one member of the team is out for revenge. There's betrayaI, suspense, action, and even a little romance. I enjoyed this unique, intriguing story, and it is short enough to finish in just a few hours.
Entertaining and wild ride with a very diverse cast! I started reading this novella during the week, but read the majority of it today in one sitting. Looking forward to the next one!
I haven‘t been able to read as much as I sometimes do at the beach, but I really enjoyed both of these. Carrie Fisher‘s memoir is great on audio!
And another #audiobook rec for #24in48! This short book is a romp of a read, an alternate history set in the Wild West with HIPPOS. Yes, hippos. Added bonus: it counts for task 7, a #western, for @bookriot's #readharder challenge!

So Much Fun!!! I finally read it, @razmanda ! A little dark, too, but overall a wonderfully enjoyable adventure. Such a ridiculous sounding premise, but she really makes it work. I can‘t wait to read the sequel. Counting this as my western for @bookriot #ReadHarder Pic is of my attempt at Rhubarb Custard Pie with oatmeal cookie crust - I haven‘t been able to taste it yet, it has to cool in the fridge :(
This was so much fun! A late 1800's western caper featuring man-eating hippos and a wonderfully diverse cast of characters; a variety of ethnicities, sexualities, genders, body types, etc. Such a action-packed, violent delight. I bought the 2nd book, Taste of Marrow, IMMEDIATELY and I'm gonna go dive into it now. 😆💖🌿

A Western where people ride and herd hippopotamuses rather than horses, what more could you want. Compelling story, interesting characters. Okay, I could have used a bit more character development but hopefully the sequel will help with that. Definitely recommend. #novella #western #specfic #Mayreads 5/5
Now reading, a hella good novella.
It was a good book buying day at half price books. I‘ve read everything here except river of teeth, but I‘ve really been into novellas so I‘m looking forward to diving into it.
In all honesty I have not read Sarah Gailey‘s alternate history duology about an America where cowboys hunt feral hippos who have taken over the Mississippi, but this piece of artwork is currently the background on my phone and looking at it made a stressful evening bearable...
so thanks, Sarah Gailey!
I'm starting off my #FreakyFriday month with River of Teeth. This was a fun quick read! Solid diverse characters, original plot, hippo attacks, and a very pregnant contract killer made for a great time in the swamp! This was a good start to the awesome list from @ferskner ! #nowiwantmyownhippo @monalyisha @Clwojick
An alternate history where hippos live in Louisiana bayous and our heroes ride them into battle?! Drop everything and read Sarah Gailey‘s preposterously fun novella. It‘s got everything-hippos, heists, true love, etc. etc. AAAAAND you can knock the whole book out in a night. So what are you waiting for? 🤔
