Still Life with Woodpecker
Still Life with Woodpecker | Tom Robbins
Still Life with Woodpecker is a sort of a love story that takes place inside a pack of Camel cigarettes. It reveals the purpose of the moon, explains the difference between criminals and outlaws, examines the conflict between social activism and romantic individualism, and paints a portrait of contemporary society that includes powerful Arabs, exiled royalty, and pregnant cheerleaders. It also deals with the problem of redheads. From the Trade Paperback edition.

“The romance of new love, the romance of solitude, the romance of objecthood, the romance of ancient pyramids and distant stars are means of making contact with the mystery. When it comes to perpetuating it, however, I got no advice. But I can and will remind you of two of the most important facts I know:
1. Everything is part of it.
2. It's never too late to have a happy #childhood.” #QuotsySept20

Took a sneaky pic of the hubs reading. Reading in bed together makes my heart happy ❤️

parasolofdoom Ooh I loved that book. I didn't think it was 5* at the time but it stuck in my mind a loooong time after I read it and I even still remember ruminating after 15 years later. 6y
JoScho @parasolofdoom it is one of his faves and way back when before we were married he gave me his copy. He is re-reading it. I just asked if it was as good as he remembered and he said “oh yeah” 6y

Probably one of my favourite opening lines ever: “If this #typewriter can't do it, then fuck it, it can't be done.”

"This baby speaks electric Shakespeare at the slightest provocation and will rap out a page and a half if you just look at it hard."

"There is, however, a similarity between juggling and composing on the typewriter. The trick is, when you spill something, make it look like part of the act.”

1. Tagged book. The Camel smoker that still lives in me will always love this cover. (I no longer smoke 😊)
2. Frida Kahlo was a total badass and I love how strong she was in every way.
3. Skull with Burning Cigarette by Van Gogh
4. MoMA I am a modern art girl that appreciates the classics as well.
Thanks to everyone that played today! As an art history major it was super fun for me to know which artists and pieces you all love. ❤️❤️❤️

aarchamb Frieda is definitely da bomb! Did you hear her family sued Mattel because they made a Barbie-like doll of her without their consent? No Frieda doll for you if you live in Mexico! (Ps... I'm glad her family won that round) 6y

So of course when he told me that he‘d be interested in the tagged book I bought it right away 😅 He did start reading it but he has weird reading habits and rereads the pages so many times, I think now, half a year later he is still only like five pages in😅 I doubt he will ever finish it, but it was worth the try😂😂 #siblings #readingresolutions @Jess7

I no longer know what love is. A week ago I had a lot of ideas. What love is and how to make it stay. Now that I'm in love, I haven't a clue. Now that I'm in love, I'm completely stupid on the subject.

Soubhiville I read this around 15 years ago and loved it! I should give it a reread! 8y
ReadingEnvy I saw a character in a tv show reading this and looked it up and most of the reviews treated it like it was for hipster men. What do you think? 8y
Christine89 I went through a Tom Robbins phase in the 90s. I recently read his memoir, Tibetian Peach Pie which made me want to re-read his older stuff. I remember in the 90s it seemed like a lot of girls my age were reading Robbins, so it is interesting to think of it being a hipster thing now. Of course, it may not age well, but I remember loving how fun and crazy his stuff is. 8y

I wasn't too sure. It started out weird. I wasn't in to it. It stayed weird, don't get me wrong. I began to understand it & underline it & love it. Full of insight & deep thoughts & concepts I'd never touch on my own. One of the best love stories I've ever read. Glorious. Definitely recommend it.
