Close Enough to Touch
Close Enough to Touch: A Novel | Colleen Oakley
From the author of Before I Go comes an unconventional but beautiful love story perfect for fans of the emotional novels of Jodi Picoult and Jojo Moyes. One time a boy kissed me and I almost died... And so begins the story of Jubilee Jenkins, a young woman with a rare and debilitating medical condition: shes allergic to other humans. After a humiliating near-death experience in high school, Jubilee has become a recluse, living the past nine years in the confines of the small town New Jersey house her unaffectionate mother left to her when she ran off with a Long Island businessman. But now, her mother is dead, and without her financial support, Jubilee is forced to leave home and face the worldand the people in itthat shes been hiding from. One of those people is Eric Keegan, a man who just moved into town for work. With a daughter from his failed marriage who is no longer speaking to him, and a brilliant, if psychologically troubled, adopted son, Erics struggling to figure out how his life got so off-course, and how to be the dadand manhe wants so desperately to be. Then, one day, he meets a mysterious woman named Jubilee, with a unique condition... An evocative, poignant, and heartrending exploration of the power and possibilities of the human heart.

Gave me Everything, Everything (Nicola Yoon) & Five Feet Apart (Rachael Lippincott) vibes but yet, not. The ending was nothing like I'd expected until like a few lines from the end and then I wasn't sure I wanted what I thought I did up until that point either.

It took me little bit to warm up to this (mostly because I had a book hangover) but once I did I couldn‘t put it down. I loved it. Didn‘t exactly love the end; it felt a little unresolved in some ways but still, definitely worth the read.

I have a soft spot in my heart for quirky. With Jubilee and her rare allergy to human contact and Aja convinced he can muster telekinesis, quirky is easily found.

At a time when Covid 19 restricts us from giving those outside our bubbles hugs, touch, and physical connections, this novel felt like the perfect story. Jubilee Jenkins has a rare allergy—to other people—and she‘s sequestered away herself for years. When she is forced out into the world, it‘s about unconventional characters, tangled relationships, and love. Like Kirkus said, “A romantic, sweet story about taking chances and living life fully.”

Loved the MCs. Switching perspectives each chapter made it especially interesting. Grabbed my heart but the end was rushed. As if the writer got an ultimatum—finish this in X pages in Y days. Or else. 4/5 ⭐️

This story is hard to describe. It's a love story, it's about empowerment, friendship, loss, grieve, heartache, reconnecting, and books.

There were a few issues that I (!) had with the story - spoiler tag in the comments.

PS: my reading buddies did not want to stay on either side of me. #catsoflitsy

Okay. I said I looooove the story, but there are tiny things that just don't make sense.

My quiche is nearly ready.

Can't knit today. Have some weird thing with the bicep in my right arm. My physiotherapist kneaded my arm this morning and now it's not only sore but I'm supposed to rest it and keep it warm.

Can I have a normal day for a change?

vkois88 *hugs* sorry it's a rough day, but your quiche looks delicious! Grab a nice warm blanket, some tea, and snuggle up to read ❤ 6y
julesG @vkois88 Thanks. I joked about it to my PT, told her it's the arm I hold my books with. So it'll be the kindle in the left hand for this weekend. 6y

AlaMich You need a Kindle stand 😊. I love mine! 6y
julesG @AlaMich Good idea, but I can easily hold it in my left hand. It's just knowing I'm not supposed to do something, makes me crave it. Like going sugar free, all of a sudden you crave sugars. 6y
Lindy Hope your arm feels better soon. 🌻 6y
julesG @Lindy Thanks. I'm glad I have great physiotherapists. Saves me the trip to the GP, who'd transfer me to the orthopaedic doctor - which normally has a 7-9 weeks waiting list. Just means more reading time and some #audiocleaning, because I want to finish my audiobook. 6y
ReviewsbytheMrs That looks amazing! Hope your arm heals and you are able to knit again soon 💜 6y
Maria514626 Hope your arm is better soon. A knitting fast is no good! My mouth is watering over that quiche. 6y

The last book I 'read' up to now, but haven't finished yet, is the tagged.

The word I choose is: #Hope

Every one of the MCs needs hope and is hoping something certain will happen.

Cathythoughts Thanks 🙏🏻 your name is in the hat 🎩❤️ 6y
julesG @Cathythoughts Thank you! 6y
Cathythoughts I really do have a hat ( not a virtual hat) I will post before the draw. My husband will pick the name out of the hat ( sharing because of our hat History 🎩😉) 6y
julesG @Cathythoughts That's cool. I have my great-grandfather's top hat he wore at his wedding. Unfortunately it's broken and getting this original 'chapeau clac' (foldable top hat) repaired is expensive. Maybe I should really pick up millenery. 6y

I am about 1/3 in and looooove the story. This #audiobook is great.

The cats are sleeping off a catnip hangover. Shadow ripped open one of the toys while I was out and they shared the catnip inside. 😲
Got home to find two stoned cats. Ghost fell forward off the couch while looking down at Shadow. Then they ran around the flat like greased lightning.

On another note, I have new medication for fatigue. It's day two with them and I feel good!

Never, really, thought about just how much we rely on touch to convey emotion, meaning, to connect. I was shocked at how uncomfortable and antsy I got every time Jubilee was faced with a situation that would normally involve touching in some way.

There was too much inner monologue that slowed the pace of the story; however, the humor and the book-love made for a fun read.

Here's 6 books where someone else is reading: the classics--Lizzy of P&P & Francie from A Tree Grows in Brooklyn, then Liesel of The Book Thief & Matilda who both read to escape, & library workers Nora of The Invisibles-who collects first lines of 📚& Jubilee of the tagged 📕allergic to touch & hiding with 📚before finally venturing out. ❤️

A very sweet, funny and quirky read. I really enjoyed this story about a woman who's allergic to other people and a man who's trying to connect with his children. It's quite an emotional read and yes it did make me cry. I loved MC Jubilee, she has such a hard time but is just so funny, clever and weird. Also loved all of the literary references and that a lot is set in a library. Only niggle was that ending was too quick.

I really liked this book. It has a very unique plot and I loved the characters. It was humourous yet emotional. While I felt that the portrayal of the public library was not always realistic, I enjoyed the fact that a great deal of the book took place there.
