Interesting. Work to be done.

Actually one of the books I read this year was written by some one claiming to be indigenous who was not. So I perhaps have a negative number there...

runswithscissors007 @KVanRead @Book_Fiend_Melissa Yes. Three Day Road. A good book but I heard it put really well when someone said he was taking up air time on indigenous stories. The Round House by Louise Erdrich is one I would recommend for an own voice novel. 4y

MsMelissa I loved Three Day Road. It‘s one of my favourite novels, and I still recommend it highly as a novel of the WWI experience. For Indigenous voices my recommendations are Richard Wagamese and Thomas King. I‘ve not yet read Erdrich, but I have at least one of her novels sitting on an e-reader. 4y

runswithscissors007 @Book_Fiend_Melissa i💚💚💚 Thomas King. Do you listen to the CBC? He did a radio show on there called Dead Dog Cafe. I have read a few of his books and I could listen to him talk all day long! 4y

MsMelissa I don‘t listen to CBC radio, but I‘ve seen him speak about some of his books (probably on some CBC TV show). Have you read any of his Thumps DreadfulWater series? I read book one earlier this year and thought it was great. 4y

KVanRead @runswithscissors007 @Book_Fiend_Melissa Thomas King is one of my 2 indigenous authors so far this year (the other is Tanya Tagaq). I read The Inconvenient Indian and really liked it and have been curious to to try others by him so glad to have your recs. My favorite Indigenous read last year was by Tommy Orange.

There There: A novel

KVanRead I also loved 3 day road but was disappointed when the controversy erupted. He‘s such a good writer it was so unnecessary (and wrong) for him to appropriate an identity like that. 4y

runswithscissors007 @KVanRead inconvenient Indian was a dense read. Even with his light touch. But worth it! I dug our the book of short stories it‘s called One Good Story That One. 4y

2. I thought I would find a kindered spirit in Mr. Rogers but I had to bail. Was not connecting with him at all. So I guess not connecting with a “character”.

I have an inkling that this may just be my fav read of 2020. I was dubious. For the first part of the book women were only referred to as “the whores”. But then three of the five sections of the book were dedicated to telling the stories of some fabulously compelling women. Their stories were conveyed with charm, compassion and beautifully woven layers. The best part is this observation only scratches the surface!🖤 #jumpstart2020

The way relationships played out in this book was it's strength. The author had a wonderful talent for writing about delicate relationships. It was graphic at times, but it seemed to fit the story. There was some language and one or two characters that seemed a little over done, but overall a pick 🤠
