#Read2025

Finished this one last weekend for April‘s #ChildrensClassicRead2025 First published in 1957, I‘m not sure how I missed this one growing up especially since the author‘s The Story of Holly and Ivy was a holiday favorite as a child. This is a quick & sweet read about Bonnie, a baby mouse who gets pushed out of her family‘s crowded flowerpot & finds a mouse house to live in. The illustrations are wonderful. 🐭🏠

TheBookHippie It‘s so cozy!!!! I‘m not sure how I missed it either! 3h

#Read2025

I‘m catching up on my April reviews this weekend & I loved this book! A good thing as it was a trifecta of challenge prompts: #AuthorAMonth #LiteraryCrew #BuddyRead & one of the books from @JacqMac ‘s #AuldLangSpine list. This is my third Kate Quinn book & maybe my favorite. The audiobook was stellar & I finished & listened to the author notes twice + an interview with the author & narrator who really brought the characters to life. ⬇️

DebinHawaii … I learned a lot about the Red Scare, McCarthy & Washington DC in the era. The mystery was good as was the ways the characters were introduced & their layers uncovered. I also enjoyed the sentient Briar House & the communal dinners with recipes & music selection of the times included. It kept me engrossed during lots of airport commutes in April & will likely be a favorite of the year for me. 11h

Thank you @dabbe for the #ThreeListThursday #TLT tag! 🤗 As usual I am late to the party but here goes: 52/100 is not bad considering I haven‘t read any Terry Pratchett (or Jacqueline Wilson for that matter).

My Top 5 (can‘t pick 3) are:
1. Pride and Prejudice
2. Persuasion
3. Jane Eyre
4. Little Women
5. The Stand
Giving a bonus shout out to The Great Gatsby which I hated in high school but loved when I reread it in March. Personal Growth!🎉

dabbe I haven't read either of those authors either, but you still kicked my sorry butt! 🤣 Thanks for playing and sharing. 💜💚💜 13h

Catching up with #HaikuADay with @dabbe

Day #2 is an ode to Friday:

Friday, ender of work weeks,

P.S. I love the rough haiku rules where I can mix my 17 syllables & not have it be 5-7-5 but I think my 5th grade teacher would frown on it! 😉😂

dabbe I always told my students to learn the rules first, then once they knew what they were doing, to go ahead and break 'em a little bit! (never on a boring essay, though). 🤣 This one words wonderfully well as a 7, 5, 5! 💙🩵💙 16h

#Read2025 #MonthlyNonFiction

I‘m behind on reviews & discussion but I finished this for April‘s #Naturalitsy #BuddyRead I borrowed an ebook copy from the library & it‘s a quick & interesting book of essays about the Owens Valley & Mohave Desert in California. Written in 1903, it‘s wonderful nature writing & while my version may have suffered for lack of photos, the writing was descriptive enough to make me see it in my mind. While reading & ⬇️

DebinHawaii …stopping to Google more details, I found out/realized that From 1942 to 1945, during World War II, the first Japanese American Internment camp operated in the Owens valley at Manzanar. Maybe it‘s only interesting to me because I grew up reading & rereading the book tagged below but I like when I can tie books together. A enjoyable read overall, I would buy a print copy (hopefully with pictures) for my shelves. (edited) 2d

Posting a quick review for this book, my third #Roll100 pick of April (#24 Any short stories or essays). I have been meaning to read this since it came out & overall I really enjoyed it. The stories explore the experiences of Native Hawaiian & mixed race women in Hawaii & are a mix of speculative fiction, horror, magical ⬇️

I didn‘t do a great job of taking a picture of yesterday‘s #IndependentBookstoreDay haul but I got a good haul. My local indie bookshop, Da Shop had 20% off all purchases, a free bookstore print after 2 pm & a new tote bag with the same print from a local artist plus a few local vendors. So I got 5 books (tagged 1 & I‘ll link the others below), tote bag, bookmarks lots of stickers & postcards from the vendors. The artist that drew the print had ⬇️

DebinHawaii … sets of postcards —the larger ones were Studio Ghibli inspired designs & the small set was of island scenes. I loved the colors of both. I went over my planned spend budget by a bit, but it was worth it. I picked the books that spoke to me as I moved around the shop. And both artists I bought from were really nice—I love supporting local artists. (edited) 7d

#Read2025 #MonthlyNonFiction2025 #RealHistory #HonestHistory

Read with #SheSaid for April, Brittney Copper writes clearly & passionately & I like how she weaves her personal experiences in with culture, history & current events. It‘s dismaying that this book was written in 2018 with Trump in office the first time & reading it in 2025 things just continue to get worse. Truthfully as a white woman, it was uncomfortable reading at times as she ⬇️

DebinHawaii … is spot on in her evaluation of our collective role in the injustice & bigotry that hold women of color & thus all women back. I think I highlighted half the book, but the two quotes pictured especially stood out for me because at the end of the day, Cooper focuses on hope & building the kind of world we want to see. Another book I finished a while ago & didn‘t post a review for. My second April #Roll100 pick (#16 Any Library Book). While not my favorite Hendrix book (it didn‘t have as much dark humor as his others), I did enjoy it. It did drag a little in spots, but by the end I was anxiously turning the pages to find out what happened. Less about witchcrafty horror & more about the horrors done to unmarried pregnant girls & women in the era.😱

Finished this weekend for #BobWhiteBuddies there is always a chance of #Danger when Trixie Belden is around. This one was a favorite growing up probably because of the NYC setting & finally, Dan gets to go somewhere! (Granted it‘s within state lines but anyway…) I can still recite the first 2 lines of the fortune Trixie is given by a fortune teller she helps at the airport which is pretty impressive since ⬇️

DebinHawaii … I have trouble remembering where I park my car at the grocery store. “Great-headed man, with blinking eye, A shaded road, a horse‘s cry,“ after that I only remember bits & pieces of the rest of it but there is a mention of #Danger: “Where shines a beacon 'cross the sky, Beware, great danger lurks close by.” so it works for today‘s prompt. Trixie is a bit annoying in this one & does some dumb things as does the gang. ⬇️ 1w
DebinHawaii … So what do they do right after declaring they will stay together as a group to keep safe? They separate of course, giving the inept bad guys yet another chance to try to grab the statue Trixie buys. Speaking of the statue, even the adults are awfully careless with it. But still, I have much nostalgic love for this series & this book (#12 in the series), so it‘s a pick. Next up we go to Cobbett‘s Island, another favorite of my youth. (edited) 1w

I finished this last week but I‘m behind in reviews. Read for #MonthlyNonFiction it was also one of my April #Roll100 picks (#16 Any Non-Fiction). It was an interesting juxtaposition to read this book while watching random famous people try to pass themselves off as astronauts & having Nancy Drew solve a mystery with exploding oranges at Cape Canaveral. I remember being in class (college) in the morning when they wheeled in a tv & ⬇️

DebinHawaii … showed the haunting replay of the Challenger exploding. So chilling & crushing to watch. 2. Most aren‘t the messages I look for so I don‘t follow them. Maybe not quite the same but I do like The New Happy https://www.instagram.com/newhappyco?igsh=b2NpNnVqcHYyZWd6 I follow on Instagram & like the daily messages/colorful graphics. I have her new book on hold at the library. ⬇️

DebinHawaii … I‘m hoping it‘s like her posts & features-with simple changes & ideas to think about. Today‘s post about being kinder to yourself hit home for me—I‘m way too self critical. 🤷🏻‍♀️ 2w
Kerrbearlib @DebinHawaii I'm also way too self-critical. I'm doing better with being kind to myself, but it's not always easy. I'm requesting her book too, sounds like it may be helpful! Thanks for sharing!

#Naturalitsy #HyggeHourReadathon

Spending my #HyggeHour with Trixie & the gang for #BobWhiteBuddies & enjoying this cocoa custard Easter Bunny roll as my snack with tea. I‘m excited about this one (book 12) in the series because I remember the first 2 lines of the fortune Trixie gets when the Bob-Whites go to NYC.

Not looking forward to it being Monday tomorrow although this is a no-travel week for me, so hopefully a bit calmer.

TheBookHippie That roll!!!! 2w

#Read2025 #SeriesLove2025

Finished on audio a couple of weeks ago & forgot to post my review. Out of the trilogy, this one was my favorite. Although dark, it didn‘t seem like the author felt the need to be so extreme with the murdery or the sexy bits & for my ears, the narrator wasn‘t giggling every 2.5 seconds. Plus I really like Rose & Fionn (sp?) individually & as a couple. I still think I‘m a little old for this series but I liked this one.

TheSpineView Fantastic! 🤩📖📚 2w
DieAReader 🎉🎉🎉 2w
CoverToCoverGirl This one is my next read. I like them and she is a local author, that‘s why I decided to read her . It‘s very trendy, the writing isn‘t exactly polished but I need to know how it all ends. The narrators are fantastic. And it really is quite different from anything I‘ve read before and I‘ve read some dark stuff. 2w
DebinHawaii @CoverToCoverGirl I hope you like it! I started with the first one on #BOTM mainly for the serial killer slant & agree, even if the writing isn‘t the best, I did have to finish it up & I do like the dark humor. 2w
MaleficentBookDragon I just finished this one today. This was my first dark romance and the writing was actually better than I expected. I enjoyed the humor and laughed out loud during the Barbara clinic scene.
I haven't read the other two and don't think I will; not because this one was bad, but just because this was the only one of the trilogy that sounded interesting to me.

#Read2025

I actually finished this a couple of weeks ago but haven‘t been getting to all my reviews this month. Another winner from my #AuldLangSpine list from @JacqMac I have been thinking about it since I finished it. Quill is a Native American woman living in Minnesota who is out running in the early morning & hears a scream. Caught up in finding her as the police will treat it as just another #MMIW case-som thing happening too often to ⬇️

DebinHawaii …her people. (According to the Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA), there are approximately 4,200 missing and murdered women cases that have gone unsolved.) It was a good mystery that also made me angry, made me think & taught me some things I didn‘t know about Indigenous language & culture. Very compelling as well as informative about the dismaying & frightening facts & statistics around #MMIW (Murdered or Missing Indigenous Women.) (edited) 2w
BooksandCoffee4Me Added. So much history not learned. After reading Killers of the Flower Moon, I‘ve wanted to read more about and by indigenous people. I want to hear their stories. I want to hear their voices. 2w
JacqMac The one stayed with me for a long time, too. 2w

#Read2025 #SeriesLove2025

Finished last week for #ThematicCozies April #Sports theme, one of my two picks. I don‘t know that this one is really that sports related. The MC goes to Mackinac Island to help her boss‘s father with his bike shop when he breaks his leg & starts trying to solve a murder when he is accused. There‘s talk of a bike race but most renters are tourists getting around the no-car island. Still it was cute-maybe a little over ⬇️

DebinHawaii …top at times with just how accident prone the MC was, but I overall enjoyed the audiobook (free on Audible) & would listen to the next book in the series. (This is book 1). 2w
TheSpineView Well done!🤩🩷📚 2w
julieclair I‘d read it just for the Mackinac Island setting. I‘ve always wanted to go there! 2w

I‘ve been so absent from ThreeListThursday #TLT that I had to join in late. Interesting list of books-I feel OK with 56/100. If only you got to x it by the number of times you‘ve read it—I would be a top scorer through P&P alone!🤷🏻‍♀️

My 5 favorites:
1. Pride and Prejudice is my all-time love!💜
2. The Joy Luck Club🥠
3. Little Women of course! 👯‍♀️👯‍♀️
4. I need to read The Stand again-my fave King!👑
5. I loved The Hunger Games series 🏹

dabbe And if we could count all the P&P pastiches, too! You kicked my sorry butt! Thanks for playing and sharing. 🩵💙🩵 2w

Late again with my #5JoysFriday post & another crazy week where most of my joy came from food.🤦🏻‍♀️Oh well!

1. Joy while on trips to Hilo: a glimpse of Diamond Head when landing & two upgrades-one morning & one evening with time for reading of course.🛩️🩵

2. Ramen with creamy paitan broth is joyful comfort.💛

3. A perfect poke bowl-so fresh & joyful. 🐟💙

4. I don‘t eat them often but sometimes a good loco moco breakfast brings joy.😋

⬇️

DebinHawaii … 5. Cadbury Mini Eggs are seasonal/Easter joy. 🐰
I‘m still so behind with visiting #5JoysFriday posts but I hope to get around to appreciate them soon! The world needs more joy & so do I, so thank you for joining in! 💛🤗💛

A slightly later start to my #ChatterDay Saturday. My plan is catch up & wind down a little from a crazy work week & Friday travel to Hilo. At my usual coffee shop haunt waiting for my Kalua pork breakfast wrap to cool a bit (it smells delicious). 🤤😋

Starting this one for #LitsySciFiBookClub #LSFBC & catching up on posts, reviews, emails & a couple of cards if I have time before running errands.

LeahBergen Is that the Easter Rabbit? 😉 2w

Thanks @Eggs for the #WondrousWednesday tag. 🤗 I‘m a little late as usual.

1️⃣ The tagged book wrecked me emotionally as it hit too close to home & felt so real.😱 The Frozen River was a favorite & I keep thinking about it. The Feather Thief was just so interesting, I‘ve recommended it to several people.

2️⃣ I haven‘t DNFed so far this year! So far so good.

I‘m late so if you haven‘t played & want to, consider yourself tagged. 🤗

Texreader I‘ve only read Feather Thief of the books you listed but wasn‘t it good? 2w
Eggs I do love Ariel Lawhon! Loved the characters/relationships in Frozen Winter! 2w
